“My Great Grandpa” By Martin Waddell and Dom Mansell

Read through this part of the story to practise, then record yourself reading it (voice recording or video) and share your reading with your teacher. Remember to think about your own reading goal!

My Great Grandpa is slow. His eyes are weak and his legs don’t go. But he knows things that no one else knows.

My Great Grandpa knows all about our town, who lived where and when and how. But he can’t remember who lives here now. So I have to tell him.

He says my Great Granny had eyes like mine and they would shine. Then he sits for a while and starts to smile.

My Great Grandpa does not swing or do anything! He sits and he nods and he smiles. And he thinks of the things that he knows that no one else knows.

The sun makes Great Grandpa hot and grumpy. So we go home. And he goes to bed to rest his old head.

He’s got me, he’s got Gran and my Mum, and we love him a lot.

“The Potato People” by Pamela Allen

Read through this part of the story to practise, then record yourself

reading it (voice recording or video) and share your reading with your

teacher. At the end, explain what picture you have of the story in

your head. Remember to think about your own reading goal!

One Friday, the clouds were big and black and the rain dribbled down the window panes and rattled on the tin roof.

“It’s raining,” sighed Jack.

“I know,” said Grandma.

And she went to the cupboard and brought out a big box.

Inside the box were four potatoes.

“I’m going to make a little potato man,” said Jack.

“I’m going to make a little potato woman, said Grandma.

And they did.

Grandma placed them carefully on the windowsill.

“There,” said Grandma.

“There,” said Jack.

“They look pleased with each other,” said Grandma.

“We’re pleased with each other, too,” said Jack.

Then one day Jack and his mother had to go away for a while.

That Friday, Jack didn’t come.

He didn’t come the Friday after that, or the Friday after that.

Lots of Fridays went by and still Jack didn’t come to visit Grandma.

Gradually the little potato people wrinkled and withered.

Gradually their smiles drooped and twisted.

Now Grandma called them the little old potato man and the little old potato woman.

She looked at herself in the mirror.

“I’m just like them,” thought Grandma, and she sat down and she sighed.

7 Habits of CPS Leaders

Habit 3 - Putting ‘first things first’

Imagine if the grownups in your family said that they were going to watch a movie and

cook dinner after that. Would that be the right thing to do? Or if you were allowed to eat

your dessert before dinner! The things we want to do and the things we have to do are

like rocks. The most important things are big rocks, the less important, little rocks.

Brain storm 5 things, some that are important, like brushing your teeth and

some that are fun but not important, like watching TV. Label each rock with one

of the 5 things: most important = biggest rock, not important = smallest rock.

You can label beside or on the rock. When you have finished you can colour.
