Problem Identified

ADD A REPRESENTATIVE IMAGE OF THE PROBLEM YOU

WOULD LIKE TO SOLVE

PROBLEM DESCRIPTIONNo job security for the daily wage construction workers during the covid period.

In the current covid situation which has continued to be a part of our lives for a year now, we all have adapted ourselves to a new normal. But, the condition of workers/laborers in society has been worsening since then with no improvement. The plights of all sectors have been paid attention to but no light has been reflected on the workers’ sector. They are being treated worse than animals, their houses have been uplifted, and are forced to stay on the footpath. They have been mentally and physically tortured by their bosses and landlords and the workers remain unsafe, helpless with no food and security and no employment. They wish to seek help, but some are illiterate and some are unaware of such communities who would work for them..

The problem we have chosen, falls under the “System level” category.

Urgency/ImportanceEvery little thing around us is made by construction workers. The room you are feeling cozy in, the chair you are sitting on, everything is built by the workers.Workers are known to be the foundation of the whole economical system because if workers do not exist, no architect or landlord is going to place bricks or mix cement, it is ultimately the workers who build up the city.During this covid situation, attention has been paid to each and every sector; doctors, frontline workers, businessmen, but the foundation of our country, the workers are completely being ignored.Covid still exists in our lives and now that we are preparing for the third wave, we cannot commit the mistake of ignoring the worker’s plight yet again.Continued ignorance towards the skilled/unskilled worker class will lead to their deaths and if the foundation dies, the whole building of the economy has to collapse. The previous year, millions of workers were seen marching back to their homes. Some lost their lives due to walking for miles, due to starvation. Some slept on the railway tracks for relaxing and were crushed under the railways.Death of workers= Death of the economy

Urgency/ImportanceDuring the covid situation, the city dwellers have adapted themselves to the new normal, towards the online mode. Education, exams, etc. everything is now being conducted online. With minimum wages, workers are not able to afford a smartphone for their kids, and even if they do own one, they would require a huge amount of data or broadband facilities for attending online sessions .Over 70 per cent of rural India do not have access to the internet. Broadband penetration in rural India is limited to a mere 29.2 per cent, as on 31 March 2020.As a result, kids are told to drop out of school and are pushed into this filthy world of harmful labor in their childhood itself.Unemployment has been the biggest enemy for everyone during the covid times and has been even harsher on these workers. Workers are constantly found in depression, stress, and anger, as a result every week at least one suicide/murder/death is reported. Therefore, it is so important for us to put light on the lives of workers and help them live better lives. Workers are the foundation of this whole system, and if this is ignored in the upcoming third wave and in the future then the whole system will collide.

Explorations

SOLUTIONS & IDEAS

Taking in consideration the given problem, our first idea was to make an app itself.

Later we thought of making an UI similar to that of Linkedin.

Finally, we decided to come up with our own UI and design.

Final Solution & Innovation

Our App will be a platform which will provide financial security, employment opportunities and protection from contractors. Our app will ensure that there is a formal contract between the contractor and the worker with all details of the work eliminating all chances of deception. It will also ensure that the worker registering is a legitimate one by ensuring all required documents are uploaded. This is how our app will bridge the employment gap in our country. Analogy : our app is like LinkedIn but for workers. Our app will have a registration page, work availability page with all details, a calendar with marked events and many more.

Impact on the SocietyIMPACT OF YOUR SOLUTION

-The construction workers would get a platform solely developed to provide them with job

opportunities.

-It would prevent them from being oppressed by wealthy contractors. The help desk would resolve any difficulty they might face related to their jobs

and wages.

-The donations made would be given to needy workers. And one bank account created for

donation would ensure that no money goes to waste.

Sustainability

HOW IS YOUR SOLUTION SUSTAINABLE?

-Our app would make it very easy for out of work construction workers to find jobs.

-The donation option would ensure that help is provided to those in need during the third wave.

-Unemployment and oppression is a problem that our country has been facing since forever. And this app would make sure that construction workers continue to get jobs and are paid fairly.
