Fluid Power Fittings, Hoses and Hose Assemblies Sectional Committee, MGP 17

NATIONAL FOREWORD

This Indian Standard (Part 3) which is identical with ISO 9974-3:1996 ‘Connections for general useand fluid power — Ports and stud ends with ISO 261 threads with elastomeric metal-to-metal sealing —Part 3: Stud ends with metal-to-metal sealing (type B)’ issued by the International Organization forStandardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendations of theFluid Power Fittings, Hoses and Hose Assemblies Sectional Committee and approval of the MedicalInstruments, General and Production Engineering Division Council.

In fluid power systems, power is transmitted and controlled through a fluid (liquid or gas) under pressurewithin an enclosed circuit. In general applications, a fluid may be conveyed under pressure. Componentsare connected through their threaded ports by stud ends on fluid conductor fittings to tubes and pipes orto hose fittings and hoses.

The text of the ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standardwithout deviations. Certain conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards.Attention is particularly drawn to the following:

a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear referring to this standard, they shouldbe read as ‘Indian Standard’.

b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker while in Indian Standards, the current practiceis to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.

In this adopted standard, reference appears to certain International Standards for which Indian Standardsalso exist. The corresponding Indian Standards which are to be substituted in their places are listed.below along with their degree of equivalence for the editions indicated:

CONNECTIONS FOR GENERAL USE ANDFLUID POWER — PORTS AND STUD ENDS

WITH ISO 261 THREADS WITH ELASTOMERICOR METAL-TO-METAL SEALING

PART 3 STUD ENDS WITH METAL-TO-METAL SEALING (TYPE B)

1 Scope

This part of ISO 9974 specifies dimensions, perform-ance requirements and test procedures for heavy-duty(S series), light-duty (L series) and extra-light-duty(LL series) stud ends with ISO 261 threads and metal-to-metal sea}ing. It also specifies the designation ofthese stud ends. These stud ends should not be usedfor leak-free hydraulic fluid power applications be-cause they may leak if re-used.

Stud ends in accordance with this part of ISO 9974may be used at working pressures up to 10 MPa(100 bar l)) for the LL series, 25 MPa (250 bar) for theL series and 40 MPa (400 bar) for the S series. Thepermissible working pressure depends upon the studend size, materials, design, working conditions, appli-cation, etc.

For threaded ports and stud ends specified in newdesigns in hydraulic fluid power applications, onlyISO 6149 is to be used. Threaded ports and studends in accordance with ISO 1179, ISO 9974 andISO 11926 are not to be used for new designs inhydraulic fluid power applications.

Conformance to the dimensional information in thispart of ISO 9974 does not guarantee rated perform-ance. Each manufacturer should perform testingaccording to the specification contained in this part ofISO 9974 to assure that components comply with theperformance ratings.

3 Definitions 7.1.2 Materials

Test blocks shall be unplated and hardened to 45 HRCto 50 HRC (see ISO 6508). Stud ends shall be madefrom low carbon steel and plated.

For the purposes of this part of ISO 9974, the defi-nitions given in ISO 5598 apply.

7.1.3 Procedure

4 Dimensions7.1.3.1 Thread lubrication

Stud ends shall conform to the dimensions shown infigure 1 and given in table 1. Hex tolerances acrossflats shall be in accordance with ISO 4759-1, productgrade C.

For testing only, threads and contact surfaces shall belubricated with hydraulic oil with a viscosity of VG 32in accordance with ISO 3448 prior to the application oftorque.

7.1.3.2 Stud end torque

Test stud ends after application of the torques given intable 3.

5 Requirements

7.1.3.3 Pressure rise rate5.1 Working pressure

Stud ends made of low carbon steel shall be designedfor use at the working pressures given in table 2.

During the burst test, the rate of pressure rise shallnot exceed 138 MPa/min (1 380 bar/rein).

7.1.4 Test report

5.2 PerformanceTest results and conditions shall be reported on thetest data form given in annex A.Stud ends made of low carbon steel shall meet at

least the burst and impulse pressures given in table 2,when tested in accordance with clause 7.

7.2 Cyclic endurance (impulse) test

7.2.1 Principle6 Metal-to-metal sealing

Test six samples at their respective impulse press- ,ures. The machined seal edge is compressed during as-

sembly. This causes damage to the sealing face of theport. Safe re-assembly is not possible. A high surfacepressure shall also be obtained, otherwise leakage ispossible.

7.2.2 Materials

Use the same materials as those given in 7.1.2.

7.2.3 Procedures .

7.2.3.1 Thread lubrication

Apply lubricant as specified in 7.1.3.1.

7 Test methods

Parts used for the cyclic endurance or burst test shallnot be tested further, used or returned to stock.

7.2.3.2 Stud end torques

Apply torque as specified in 7.1.3.2.7.1 Burst pressure test

7.1.1 Principle 7.2.3.3 Cycle and pressure rise rate

Test three samples to confirm that stud ends in ac-cordance with this part of ISO 9974 meet or exceed aratio of 4:1 between the relevant burst and workingpressures,

The cycle rate shall be uniform between 0,5 Hz and1,3 Hz and shall conform to the wave pattern shownin ISO 6803, except that the pressure rise rate shall beadjusted accordingly.
