Ireland’s Fish and Seafood Industry – An Overview

The clean, unpolluted waters around Ireland’s 7,500km coastline are rich in aquatic

life and form an exceptional environment for seafood. The rough Atlantic waters

which shape the Irish coastline are confronted with the warm waters of the Gulf

Stream and the cold fresh waters which flow off the Irish bog lands. Over 12,000km²

of turf bog is present in Ireland which makes it one of the last remaining ecosystems

of this type in Europe.

Total estimated annual sales of Irish Seafood on both domestic and export markets,

excluding direct landings for Irish vessels into foreign ports, amount to €730 million

and 345000 tonnes. Exports to the year ending November 2009 are estimated at

€309mn, representing about 42% of total Irish seafood sales.

An estimated 75% of Irish Seafood exports are sold in EU markets, with France being

the main market for Irish Seafood followed by the UK and Spain. Markets outside

of the EU are also of vital importance notably for Ireland’s pelagic fleet which fishes

mainly mackerel, herring and blue whiting. Nigeria and Russia are among the main

markets for these species.

The Irish Seafood industry generates an estimated 11,600 jobs, supporting the

economic viability of remote, rural and coastal communities. At production level it is

estimated that 4,987 people are employed in fisheries, 1,936 in Aquaculture, 3,507

in seafood processing and 1,185 in ancillary services.

Introduction to theDirectory

This directory provides a profile of the leading Irish exporters of fish and seafood. It is broken down by the main species type, namely Shellfish, Whitefish, Pelagics and Salmon. It does not profile every exporter of fish and seafood from Ireland.

Page 3: Irish seafood exporters directory-English.pdf

With an estimated value of €131 million, the Irish Aquaculture industry continues

to significantly contribute to the seafood sector.

Irish Aquaculture follows strict quality guidelines through the BIM run Quality Seafood

Programme which includes schemes for Irish Quality Salmon, Irish Quality Mussels

and Irish Quality Oysters.

Irish farmed salmon is certified under quality schemes which are audited to EU

45011 standard. This ensures a high level of environmental management practices

and animal well being. Consequently Irish farmed salmon is accredited by the most

renowned quality labels such as AB Bio, Naturland, and Label Rouge. Irish salmon

is also renowned as a pioneer seafood product for organic certification and is

recognized as a leader throughout Europe.

Farmed mussels and oysters feed naturally on wild phytoplankton in the sea.

The environmental impact of mussel and oyster farming in Ireland therefore is low.

Many Irish mussel farmers are certified under BIM's Quality Seafood Programme

which controls environmental management practice, food safety and product quality.

Irish oyster farmers are certified under the Irish Quality Oyster Programme which

controls criteria such as shell shape, meat content, farming and environmental

management practice. A dedicated website gives full information on the scheme:

www.iqo.ie.

Irish wild fisheries are controlled by the European TAC and quota management

system. In addition to this, however, many species fished in Irish waters also come

under particular environmental quality schemes such as Irish V Notched Lobster, MSC

Mackerel, and line caught Irish Friends of the Sea Tuna.

For details of any Irish supplier not profiled in this directory, please contact Bord Bia’s

head office, details of which are provided on the final page of this directory. A CD

is also included on the inside cover of this directory. This CD provides an in-depth

overview of the Irish seafood sector. Details of the individual species landed or farmed

in Ireland are provided, with a specific emphasis on production figures, key export

markets by species, and the unique selling points of these individual species available

from Ireland to customers throughout the world.

to sell. This opens up new possibilities not affected by the logistics of fresh produce.

The benefits of frozen at sea Prawns are that optimum product quality is maintained

and also vessels can stay at sea longer and thereby decrease fuel consumption. This

technology, coupled with Ireland’s proximity to the main Prawn fishing grounds allows

the Prawns to be handpicked and quickly frozen ensuring exemplary quality, freshness

and traceability. The boats can stay at sea for longer, substantially decreasing the coop’s

carbon footprint.

of young, second generation fishermen boasts an 11 strong fleet of modern boats and

an impressive collective of skilled manpower. This year, 6 of the vessels have installed

‘frozen at sea’ equipment and they now have both frozen and fresh product available

Product/Company unique selling points: In 1893 the Wright family began

smoking Irish Salmon. The craft has been passed down through the generations and

little has changed. They still fillet the fish by hand and cure using only natural sea

salt. They then smoke each fish for eight hours using pure oak chippings which give

their product its world renowned flavour. This year, due to conservation of their Wild

Salmon stocks, Wrights of Howth have now moved to producing Organic Irish Smoked

Salmon. The company has had a Spanish base in Vigo for the past 12 years looking

after French, Spanish and Italian markets. In Ireland they are based in the fishing

harbour in Howth, Co. Dublin, with access to direct landings of boats.

Quality accreditations certifications: Certified HACCP, Organic and Kosher certified.

Awards received: Great Taste Awards 2009 – smoked organic Salmon.
