Localized sector of Tuscan industry

Sectors of a large size in absolute terms and of importance as compared to national competitors (textiles, clothing and knitted goods, pulp and paper, footwear)

Sectors of a small size in absolute terms but of importance as compared to national competitors (leather goods, tanning, gold and jewelry articles, marble, etc.)

Sectors of a small size in absolute terms and of scant weight (niche sectors) as compared to national competitors (the various compartments of mechanical engineering, pharmaceuticals, ceramics, etc.).

The birth of high-tech sectorsof Tuscan industry

Came about in three main waves dating back:1. to the first half of the century and regards the group

of enterprises of larger size; these are firms belonging to the earliest phase of Italian industrialization, financed with both public and private capital, the ownership of which lies prevalently outside the Region;

2. to around the sixties, involved machinery-building firms; these are the units which were driven by the process of industrialization of the sixties and the seventies;

3. to the period 1970-1990, a cluster of firms operating above all in the sector of ICT, optics and electronics.

The RIS+ Tuscany pilot project Technologies for cultural heritage

Project objectives To aggregate a cluster - competitive at the international level -

integrating the competencies which are available in the different sectors which manage cultural patrimony: research, business and public institutions.

To develop demonstration prototypes of optoelectronic technology for use in cultural heritage and their examination at work in diagnostic research pilot sites.

Project results New optoelectronic technologies (laser for restoration, 3D and

laser scanner, IR high resolution scanner, environmental monitoring)

Technology evaluation and pilot sites in Italy, Europe and USA Market opportunities / partnership / promotion and

dissemination

IRE – Valencia – 12 & 13 December 2002

Project phases and methodology

Analysis and identification of the main participant agents to be successful in the definition of the project.

Establishment of a co-ordination system between the involved agents: a cluster of Innovation based on technology transfer

Survey on possibilities and opportunities Identification of the concrete actions to

be implemented.

Page 17: IRE – Valencia – 12 & 13 December 2002 Innovation in traditional sector SMEs in Tuscany by Francesco Gravina - Regione Toscana Department of economic development

IRE – Valencia – 12 & 13 December 2002

Project start point: handicaps

Lack of integration between scientific and technical competencies in research centres and industry and the expertise of cultural heritage professionals.

Intervention methods are not always based on diagnostic investigations

Lack of protocols Lack of knowledge of the real opportunities of the

market need of specialised information Traditional characteristics of the sector versus

innovation, particularly in the case of the Institutions in charge of the heritage preservation and management.

Page 18: IRE – Valencia – 12 & 13 December 2002 Innovation in traditional sector SMEs in Tuscany by Francesco Gravina - Regione Toscana Department of economic development

IRE – Valencia – 12 & 13 December 2002

IRE – Valencia – 12 & 13 December 2002

Project strategy and objectives Collaboration between public and private agents to

transfer knowledge from research centres to companies in order to produce high-tech optoelectronic products and innovative services in the field of cultural heritage.

Production of prototypes, based on technology transfer, successfully experimented in laboratories, and then validated on masterworks of arts and architectures.

Collaboration to carry out specific experiences and to generate a trust environment.

The final objective is to develop new products and services allowing technological applications to be diffused on a regional, national and international basis.
