.5 Case Study: [15]Crossroad's Retailing Lessons
In the first week of August, 2000, visitors to Crossroads, aretail mall, saw a polite notice informing them tat a mobile phone, acredit card or a club membership card would act as an entry ticket.People without these new age accessories would have to pay ~ 60 asentry fee, for a coupon redeemable against purchases made at anytime.
Within days, the number of visitors to the mall fell by morethan 70%. Many of the visitors felt it very insulting to prove that theypossessed a credit card or a mobile phone. Traffic continued to falleven after the ban was lifted two months later. It hovered around6000-8000 a day, as against the initial walk-insurance of 30,000-40,000 on weekdays and up to a lakhs on weekends. Disappointedwith the low traffic, Fountainhead, a bookstore, opted out ofCrosswords. Shyam Ahuja, famous for his carpets and dhurries, vacated two-thirds of the space. Other unhappy tenants too, startedrenegotiating rentals.

The 'Shoppertainment'Crossroads, situated near Haji Ali in South Mumbai, and
spread across 1,50,000 sq.ft. was launched by Piramal Enterprises inSeptember, 1999. The chairman of the group, Ajay Piramal aimed atintroducing the concept of 'shoppertainment' to the Indian consumerthrough Crossroads, complete with food courts, recreation facilities, and a large car parking space. The mall was created on four levels, offering jewellery and children's goods; gifts and women's wear;house ware; and men's wear.
Prior to the establishment of Crossroads, Piramal Enterpriseshad set up a Roche Factory at that location. To utilize the real estatein a better way, the group considered many options with the help ofconsultants McKinsey and KSA Technopak. The surveys by theseagencies revealed that the urban population always sought ashopping environment that let a family spend time together. Keepingthis in mind, the group developed the Crossroads model. Crossroadswas Ajay Piramal's answer to the malls like London's Harrods or NewYork's Macy's.(1) Analyse the case.(2) What suggestions you will give.

The store corner shop run by Mr. and Mrs. Brown has beenseeing its trade dwindle. This family business, passed fromgeneration to generation is on the verge of closure. The thorn in theBrowns' side is a hypermarket, rapidly planned and constructed fiveears a 0 on a site no more than 2 miles awa
FYBMSjM.ECOj 1
The Browns are unable to undercut the hypermarket's pricesbecause they are prevented from making bulk purchases due to theirlimited storage space. Thus, they must consider how they mightcompete non-price terms.
Lower prices are not the only advantage the hypermarket hasover the Browns. It is able to offer a wide range of goods, not onlygroceries but customer durables, clothing and hardware. It hassuperior display and hygiene, easier parking, self-service and loneropening hours, as well as credit-card facilities. What are the Brownsto do? What non-price means of competition are open to smalltraders?
The Browns do, surprisingly, have a number of options chiefamong which is their ability to offer a more per onal service, including such things as a delivery. Alternativel , the "migh turn toa local advertising campaign, stressing the shops conve .ence andplace within the community i.e. they might try and crea e a degree ofshop loyalty.
Temporary credit and longer hours further stra egie they couldadopt, fighting the hypermarket on its own terms. 0 e thing iscertain; they and others like them will have to be flexib e i they are tomeet the challenges posted by superstores.
But now the Browns face two new challenges. The localhypermarket has just introduced 24-hour opening and a new TescoMetro has just opened in the local petrol station. Wha er there thatthe Browns can do? Perha s, it's time to close down.
Questions:(1) Given that many superstores are opening longer hours, providing
counter services, home deliveries, etc., do you agree that the onlyadvantage that many small shops have left is their locali ?
(2) As an economist, analyse the threats to corner shopkeepers fromsuperstores.
