HISTORY OF FOUNDATION

• After being awarded the Jadavpur University Gold Medal for standing First in the Order of Merit in 2008, Avik Banerjee thought of founding an organization that will serve all the people in need, especially to the Individuals With Special Needs.

• Being a Special Educator (Registered with the Rehabilitation Council of India) the need to provide services to Individuals With Special Needs is increasing everyday,

• Was a well known fact.• At the point of time, when 3% of the total

world population is disabled, it’s not justified to sit and complain, but to act…

• Nine like minded people came together and Institute For The People In Need (IPN) was thus formed in 2008-09.

Institute For The People In Need (IPN) received its registration under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act, 1961 on 29th April, 2009.

STARTING OFF

• We began our work by providing technical assistance in constructing a Special Chair for Master Arko Banerjee, a Dumdum residing Cerebral palsied child.

• The Chair was delivered to his house on 15th December, 2008.

• Now Arko sits in his chair and have his lunch and dinner. The chair is helping him in developing postural support.

Service Providing Centre for the Individuals with Special Needs

• IPN started a Service Providing Centre for the Individuals with Special Needs, in 2009 where they are mainstreamed.

• The Centre runs from Monday to Friday every week (Except Public Holidays) from 2pm to 5 pm.

• Here the Individuals with various Locomotor Impairments and Neuromuscular Disorders come (like Cerebral Palsy, Mentally Retarded, Visually Impaired, Hearing Impaired, Dyslexia,

• Dysgraphia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia, Speech Difficulties and so on).

• Those who can learn academically are directed in that path and are given proper guidance.

• Those who are not academically inclined are imparted Vocational Training (like Candle making, Bag making , etc.)

Service Providing Centre for the Individuals with Special Needs

• The main target is to make them self independent, physically as well as economically so that they can sustain themselves in the future, without supervision or with minimal supervision.

• The Centre is regularly visited by Mr. Avik Banerjee(Rehabilitation Professional, Special Educator & Consultant, Counselor, Registered with the R.C.I).

WHEELCHAIR DONATION PROGRAM

• IPN donated wheelchairs to six Individuals With Special Needs on 15th September, 2009 at the KMC ground of the 115 Number Ward of Kolkata Municipality, West Bengal.

• All the six people who were given the wheelchairs have income below the poverty line.

• The wheelchairs donated are of international standard and require minimal maintenance.

• The Community Service Council of HCL Computers (Kolkata Branch) was very kind to support us in the Wheelchair Donation Program.

• Not to forget our well-wishers without whom the Program would have been incomplete.

• The local Councilor and the MLA graced the occasion.

WORKING IN AYLA EFFECTED AREAS

• A Specialist from IPN, Mr. Basudeb Banerjee took workshops in Ayla effected regions of Joynogor, Majilpur, South 24 Parganas (West Bengal) promoting Non Farm Sector (NFS).

• These workshops were conducted with the help of Vivekananda Institute of Biotechnology (VIB), a branch of Nimpith Ramkrishna Mission.

WORKING IN AYLA EFFECTED AREAS

• In these workshops, the farmers were told and informed about eco tourism.

• Since their farm lands were inundated by the salty waters during the Ayla, so again immediately farming was impossible on those lands.

• Whereas, since Sunderbans fall in the South 24 Parganas, the farmers can easily move into tourism, earning more than conventional farming.

ALL BENGAL NGO CONVENTION ON R.T.I ACT

• IPN participated at the all Bengal NGO Convention on the Right To Information (R.T.I) Act organized by Legal Aid Services- West Bengal on 19th September, 2009.

• IPN is a member of the proposed Advocacy committee for RTI Act in West Bengal.

CANCER CONTROL

• IPN was invited to send a delegate at the 7th Refresher Course on Cancer Control by Indian Cancer Society (ICS), Kolkata Branch held at Woodlands Hospitals, Kolkata on the 6th December, 2009.

• Talks are on with ICS for holding Cancer Awareness Programs in different parts of West Bengal, starting May, 2010 onwards.

22nd CERTFICATE COUNSELING COURSE

• Mr. Avik Banerjee from IPN has successfully completed the 22nd Certificate Counseling Course organized by Legal Aid Services- West Bengal held from 7th November, 2009 to 19th December, 2009.

• Mr. Banerjee leaded the team that stood First in the Role Play Competition of the Course.

• Very soon, IPN will be holding Counseling Sessions in the rural Sections of Bengal spreading social awareness.

MOTIVATION PROGRAM AT DURGANAGAR, WEST BENGAL

• Ms. Babita Banerjee from IPN held different Motivational Workshops in Durganagar of West Bengal recently for people belonging to the economically back lagging section of the Society.

• In these Programs they were also given Vocation Training on how to make Jute bags and different leather artistic goods.

ENTRENEURSHIP MOTIVATION PROGRAMME (EMP)

• Mr. Avik Banerjee and Ms. Babita Banerjee from IPN were frequent Lecturers at the Entrepreneurship Motivation Program (EMP) of 2010 held by the Directorate of Labor and Employment (Government of West Bengal) and the Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI) of Bengal National Chamber of Commerce and Industries (BNCCI).

MISSION GO GREEN

• IPN took the Mission Go Green – a vision 2015 in this year.

• In this Mission we have taken the pledge to give Kolkata a ‘Green’ makeover.

• We have already kick started the Mission on March this year, by planting small saplings and trees in the adjoining localities.

• We hope to cover the entire Kolkata by 2015.

ONGOING PROJECTS

• Now IPN has undertaken a Clothes Donation Program which will be taking place in April, 2010 in which an entire village located in the outskirts of Kolkata where the major population resides below the poverty line will be donated clothes. Our well-wishers are still donating clothes to us and the collection is on.

• The collections will be closing by 15th April, 2010.

ONGOING PROJECTS

• IPN will be conducting a Thalassemia Labeling Program with the help from the Thalassemia Control Unit of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital in different Schools of West Bengal from May, 2010 onwards.

• Final talks are going on with the schools for the scheduling of the Program.

FUTURE PROJECTS

• Talks are on with the Rotary Club of Salt Lake, Metropolitan, Kolkata for a Mobile Medical Van, by which we will be able to provide free health service to the rural areas of West Bengal.

• Talks are on with Rotary Club, for conducting training courses to make powered spectacles, each costing nearly Rs 30-40/-.

FUTURE PROJECTS

• Thus we can distribute / sell these Spectacles to the poorer section of the society.

• Women Empowerment is also taken care of as initiatives are taken to form self help groups with women in the rural areas and the outskirts. They will be given trainings in handicraft items and after that they will be able to manufacture them by their own and sell them- generating an income.

• Talks are on with different organizations in the Red light areas for conducting Programs and workshops- for the upliftment of the destitute- they’ll be imparted trainings in handicraft items and we will be tying up with different Corporate houses for their marketing.

• We also wish to increase the Service Providing Centre into a full fledged Super specialty School adjoined by a Hospital.

• A Hydrotherapy Pool is also required urgently as there is scarcity of those in Kolkata and they are very helpful in reducing spasticity.

• We are trying our best to establish these as soon as possible.
