Risk-Averse Culture Infects US Workers, Entrepreneurs- WSJ , June 2, 2013

Is America losing its mojo?

“No one would design a system of extreme supervision to prepare people for a decade of extreme openness.”

- David Brooks, NYT

Many of the things we are driving are pioneering. There is NO blueprint. We are the architects and the builders. This is hard work.

“”

There is no creativity without the risk of total failure.

“”

It’s more fun to disrupt than be disrupted — disrupters solve problems of scale with solutions of scale — they see the world not as it is, but how it could be (exploiting the tension between ‘only if’ and ‘if only’).Encourage students to take some risks.

///

Students need to see themselves as the innovators of the future.

///

Becoming more creative is more important than becoming more efficient.

Society is on the cusp of a major transformation in our relationship with our tools. In the next decade smart machines will enter offices, factories, and home in numbers we have never seen before. They will become integral to production, teaching, combat, medicine, security, and virtually every domain of our lives. As these machines replace humans in some tasks, and augment us in others, their largest impact may be less obvious: their very presence among us will force us to confront important questions.

What are humans uniquely good at? What is our comparative advantage?

I hope our educators will help students understand that they need to push the limits of what they think they know every day in order to be successful.

They need to get scared, get in over their heads, try new things and give up on the idea that they need to know it all and be right.

///

My two attributes for success: compassion and grit. In longer words, being able to see what is good for the other, and being able to see things through.

Collaboration of course, but at scale.

The world's knowledge is at our fingertips (a given) -- finding meaning in the “data” will be an in-demand superpower.

Look for the systemic causes vs. treat the symptoms.

Consider the ethical consequences.

In my opinion, it's all about curiosity, being curious about how things work, how to make them better and how to improve the world.

Curiosity spurs action, it ignites passions and drives progress. I hope our next generation will never stop asking Why and Why Not. {

We won't be manufacturers. We will be innovators, designers and

creators.The future will be bright for those

who solve problems by seeing opportunities.

 Create creators.

We won't be manufacturers. We will be innovators, designers and

creators.The future will be bright for those

who solve problems by seeing opportunities.

 Create creators.

We will be humans. We will need to connect, engage and belong.

The future will be bright for those that unite people and empower

humanity.

Create connectors.

“We need to be more entrepreneurial and comfortable working with ambiguity.

In this startup culture that we are trying to establish, we need to be more collaborative.

Everybody wants to know what box they are in. It drives me nuts.”

‘In the early days...it meant that the social fabric of the studio was disrupted, and the kind of

experience of the studio was disrupted...You needed to go to a special place in order to use certain sorts of facilities. To underline how ridiculous

that is, it’s like going to a special place to use a pencil. Imagine every time you needed to use a pencil you GO TO THE PENCIL LAB , and use the

pencil.’William J. Mitchell, MIT MEDIA Lab
