The market research firm IDC predicts that the number of Internet-connected endpoints will almost triple: surging from 10.3 billion in 2014 to 29.5 billion by the end of this decade. Many of those new endpoints will be non-traditional computing devices equipped with inexpensive, remote sensors, managed from the cloud and powered by transformative data analytics.

The changes wrought by this fast-emerging new computing environment are profound. But recent events prove that, in the rush to develop new Internet of Things products and services, security is falling by the wayside. In the last year, in-car wireless networking has enabled remote software-based takeovers of vehicles. Poorly secured, Internet-accessible home monitoring systems have given strangers a view into nurseries. The electrical grid in the Ukraine was the target of a cyber attack that darkened 80,000 homes.

THE INTERNET OF THINGS IS GOING TO BE BIG. REALLY BIG.

Are these growing pains? Or are they the first rumblings of a storm of attacks that undermines our confidence in new technologies? These incidents speak to the challenges and opportunities of the Internet of Things. The Security of Things Forum explores these and other important questions.

In its third year, The Security of Things Forum (SECoT) is a daylong event that delivers hands-on learning and discussion about the pre-eminent challenge of our time: securing IoT.

Since 2014, the Security of Things Forum has drawn together experts, practitioners and entrepreneurs from government, academia and the private sector to explore the practical and political challenges of securing a global population of tens of billions of connected, intelligent devices.

Past speakers include Chris Valasek of Uber, Dan Geer, the Chief Information Security Officer of In-Q-Tel, Federal Trade Commissioner, Julie Brill and Raytheon CTO Michael Daniels.

That tradition continues in 2016, as SECoT highlights real world IoT security implementations in arenas such as critical infrastructure, manufacturing and healthcare. This is an event that can’t be missed!
