IoT for CITIES Hackathon Hack the Future of Intelligent Cities, at the largest & more comprehensive IoT Event May 11th – 12th 2016 at Santa Clara Convention Center, Silicon Valley, CA. USA SCU and Insight IoT Team awarded in Public Safety Challenge at the Internet of Things World Hackathon! Thursday 12 th May 2016, Santa Clara Convention Center, Silicon Valley, CA, USA, This year the IoT world hackathon was attended by more than 180 hackers, between solution designers, app developers, software engineers and system architects and around 20 teams were formed at the Internet of Things World. In the framework of academic collaboration between the Department of Computer Science at Santa Clara University (SCU), CA, USA and the Insight Centre for Data Analytics at National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG), Galway, Ireland, A team of 6 people was formed to participate in the Public Safety Challenge: Develop and Application that leverages the CISCO Spark and/or Tropo API’s in conjunction with any IoT sensor(s) or device(s) and/or publically available data set that enhances public safety. Mentored by Shivakumar Mathapathi (DEW Mobility) the City IoT Avengers (name of the formed team) proposed and implemented in 24 hours the “safe InnOva ciTy App” a solution focused on CISCO’s SPARK technology and combined beacon IoT technology (BLE) supported in the hackathon by ANAREN and Broadcom, and that uses the public crime data set from the city of San Francisco, CA, USA. The Application programed in XCode natively, (but not limited) for IOS devices find effectively the safest path and directions between point A to Point B in the city defined by the users and using the Google maps user interface. Additionally the safe InnOva ciTy App was designed for using the GE Predix and Pitney Bowes Data Sets combining location and billing data for better user experience and return on investment when using public data. The VITAL smart city best practices for integrating Public data and the OpenIoT project architecture experience for enabling sensor technology were practical tools used to design and architect the system in less than 24 hours, the rest was a magnificent job of the City IoT Avengers team to integrate software interfaces, establish cloud sockets in CISCO’s SPARK technology and display the user Interface in an iPhone 6 used in the end user side for demonstrations. The time for prizes announcement came after 24 hours of hacking experience with pizzas and soft drinks and non-sleep hours and the City IoT Avengers was awarded second place in the Public Safety Challenge. Remaining issues were left in the hackathon to integrate BLE Broadcom beacons technology supported by ANAREN IoT board and the integration of more data sets from GE Predix. .
