INTRODUCTION    Dear  medical  student  and  external  guests      The  BeMSA  Executive  Board  and  the  Organising  Local  Committee  BeMSA  Gent  have  the  honour  to  invite  you  to  the  very  first  BeMSA  weekend.  This  weekend  is  so  much  more  then  just  the  third  National  General  Assembly  of  this  year.  It’s  a  weekend  filled  with  workshops,  lectures,  trainings  and  many  more.        The  weekend  contains  two  relevant  and  hot  topics:  ‘Disaster  Risk  Management’  and  ‘Public  Health  around  the  globe’.    In  the  DRM  session  you  get  the  opportunity  to  learn  more  about  a  booming  topic  which  most  of  you  never  encountered  before:  what  do  you  do  in  a  disaster?  What  are  the  protocols?  How  do  you  save  lives  in  the  chaos  of  a  disaster?  How  to  organise  medical  care  in  an  apparent  hopeless  situation?  And  what  can  medical  students  do  in  this  field?    In  the  ‘Public  health  around  the  globe’  session  you  get  to  meet  some  of  the  very  diverse  forms  of  Public  Health  that  exist  around  the  world.  We  talk  about  refugee  health,  we  continue  with  the  reproductive  health  and  we  end  our  journey  with  a  case  study:  how  to  provide  basic  health  care  in  a  remote  rural  part  of  Congo  with  limited  resources?      On  the  second  day  we  turn  the  focus  towards  our  own  organisation  and  it’s  projects.  We  have  a  meeting  of  the  SCORE-­‐,  SCOPE-­‐  and  Projects-­‐working  group.  But  we  also  provide  a  training  to  boost  your  soft  skills.  In  the  afternoon  there  is  the  third  National  General  Assembly  of  our  organisation.    Between   the   sessions  we  provide  you  with   the  necessary   food  and  drinks,   caffeine  and   the  opportunity   to  meet  medical   students   from  around   the  country.  On  the  end  of  the  first  day  you  can  really  consolidate  these  new  friendships  during  our  social  program.    You  can  read  more  about  the  topics  of  this  weekend  and  the  practical  aspects  in  this  brochure.      I’m  looking  forward  meeting  you  in  Ghent!      On  Behalf  of  the  BeMSA  EB  2014-­‐2015  Thomas  Tackaert  Secretary  General  2014-­‐2015.

By  Dr.  Steven  Callens    Epidemics  have  been  ravaging  humankind  since  the  dawn  of  men.  In  a   talk  emerging   infectious  diseases,  Prof  Dr  Steven  Callens  will  try  to  explain  the  interplay  between  nature,  culture  and  technology  that   facilitate   the   spread   of   infectious   diseases   and  what  we  may  do   about   it.   You   might   even   get   the   secret   recipe   to   produce   a  biological  weapon…

Part  2:   By  Steven  Vercammen      Do  you  want  to  know  what  to  do  when  a  disaster  strikes?  Do  you  think  you  know  what   to  do?  Do  you  know  what   is   expected   from  you  as  medical  student?  Find  out  during  this   introduction  session  about   disaster   medicine!   Experience   how   different   people   look  different   at   this   field,   learn   more   about   the   ethical   issues   and  explore  things  that  you  will  never  learn  in  medical  school!    

Part  2:     By  Prof.  Levecke    Infecties   met   spoel-­‐,   zweep   en   haakwormen,   de   zogenaamde   grond-­‐overdraagbare   wormen,   zijn   tot   vandaag   de   meest   voorkomende   parasitaire  ziektes.  Eén  vierde  van  de  totale  wereldbevolking  draagt  minstens  één  van  deze  drie   wormsoorten   met   zich   mee.   De   impact   van   deze   wormen   op   de  volksgezondheid   is   vooral   uitgesproken   bij   kinderen   en   zwangere   vrouwen   in  tropische  en  subtropische  landen.  Bij  kinderen  veroorzaken  ze  een  achterstand  in   groei   en   cognitieve   ontwikkeling,   bij   zwangere   vrouwen   veroorzaken   ze  vooral   bloedarmoede.   Om   te   vechten   tegen   deze   worminfecties,   worden   op  grote   schaal   ontwormingsprogramma’s   geïmplementeerd,   waarbij   jaarlijks   of  tweejaarlijks   ontwormingsmiddelsmiddelen   worden   toegediend   zonder   een  voorafgaande   diagnose.   Deze   programma’s   hebben   echter   een   lage  dekkingsgraad,  minder  dan  30%  van  de  kinderen  in  nood  van  een  behandeling  worden   bereikt.   Sinds   kort   is   er   daarom   internationale   politieke   en  wetenschappelijk  wil  om  tegen  2020  de  huidige  dekkingsgraad  op  te  trekken  tot ten  minste  75%  en  om  uiteindelijk  wormen  als  een  volksgezondheidsprobleem  te   elimineren.   Tijdens   deze   voordracht   wordt   de   problematiek   van  

worminfecties   toegelicht.   Vervolgens   zullen   de   grootste   uitdagingen   voor   het  succes  van  ontwormingsprogramma’s  worden  besproken.  Speciale  aandacht  zal  worden   geschonken   aan   de   rol   van   een   veterinaire   parasitoloog   in   deze  problematiek.  De  voordracht  wordt  afgesloten  met  een  getuigenis  van  het  leven  en  werken  in  Ethiopië.  

 

Part  3:     By  Hirotaka  Koiki    Hirotaka   Koiki   will   present   the   exotic   experience   about  volunteering   in   a   small   island,   called   Culion,   Palawan   Philippine,  where  the  tragedy  was  caused  by  discrimination  due  to  the  Hansen  disease,  originally  named  leprosy.  After  the  super  typhoon  Haiyan  attacked   the   beautiful   islands   in   Philippine,   he   has   been   there  alone   to   support   the   St.   Paul   Sisters'   actions   to   help   especially  indigenous  people.  After   the  work   for   rehabilitation   in   the   island,  he   has   recognized   the   importance   of   preparedness   and   youth  engagement   in   Disaster   Risk   Reduction.   Youth   Beyond   Disasters  has   recruited   him   as   the   Liaison   officer   to   establish   the   Japan  Secretariat   for  the  Children  &  Youth  Forum,  World  Conference  on  Disaster   Risk   Reduction.   He   will   give   the   insight   of   the   youth  engagement  of  DRR  and  the  relationship  to  global  youth  society  to  make  a  difference  at  all  level.  

Part  3:     By.  Dr.  Kluyskens    Na   enkele   jaren   op   verschillende   plaatsen   in   Congo   evaluaties   te   hebben  verricht  voor  een  Belgische  ngo  en  voor  de  EU,    kreeg  ik  in  2002  de  opdracht  een  project     op   te   starten,   met   fondsen   van   de   Belgische  ontwikkelingssamenwerking,   in   een   gezondheidszone   in   het   centrum   van  Congo,  met  name   in  Katako-­‐Kombe   in  de  Sankuru.  Dit  was   (en   is)     één  van  de  moeilijkst  bereikbare  en  armste  streken  van  Congo.    De  gezondheidszorg  was  er  tot  een  extreem  laag  peil  teruggevallen.  Op  de  koop  toe  was  het  gebied  sinds  enkele  jaren  afgesloten  van  de  buitenwereld  omdat  het  bezet  was  door  een  rebellenbeweging.  De  infrastructuur  en  het  wegennet  waren  in   een   onbeschrijfelijke   staat,   de   capaciteiten   van   het   (onbetaald)  gezondheidspersoneel     bijzonder   pover,  medicatie  was   nagenoeg   onbestaande  en  er  werd  niet  meer  gevaccineerd.  De  kinder-­‐en  moedersterfte  waren  er  bij  de  hoogste  van  de  wereld.  Desondanks,   mits   een   planmatige   en   progressieve   aanpak,   werd   stap   bij   stap  basisgezondheidszorg  uitgebouwd.   Ik  zal  pogen  deze  verschillende  stappen     te  illustreren  adh  van  een  ppt-­‐voorstelling,  met  veel  beeldmateriaal.    Momenteel  behoort  deze  gezondheidszone   tot  de  meest  performante   in   ruraal  Congo.  Dit  heeft  heel  veel  te  maken  met  de  aanpak  van  de  Belgische  ngo’s  die  er  ter   plaatse   werken   (Memisa,   Artsen   Zonder   Vakantie,   OORL),   de   strikte  opvolging   ,  een   team  gemotiveerde  en  enthousiaste   lokale  medewerkers  en  de  jumelage  met  een  Belgisch  ziekenhuis.  Als  voorbeeld  zal  de   impact  van  Artsen  Zonder  Vakantie  in  de  verf  worden  gezet.    Indien  de  tijd  het  toelaat  zou  ik  willen  eindigen  met  de  concrete  aanpak  van  de  moedersterfte  in  deze  zone.    Ik  hoop  dat  het  een  interactieve  sessie  zal  worden.

The  city  representatives  of  all  local  committees  gather  to  debate  on  the  topics  of  the  plenary  later  that  day.  (Only  EB/TO  and  city  representatives  can  attend)    

   

Working  group  sessions    

The  diverse  working  groups  of  BeMSA  gather  to  talk  about  the  recent  activities  and  upcoming  events  in  their  domain.    It  is  the  perfect  opportunity  to  get  to  know  the  work  of  BeMSA  and  the  enthusiastic  members  of  the  working  groups.

b) SCORE  (ENG)  Fascinated   by   scientific   research?   Have   you   always   wanted   to   organize   an   eye-­‐opening   international  exchange  for  your  fellow  students?    You're  lucky,  because  both  come  along  in  the  Belgian  Standing  Committee  on  Research  Exchange  (SCORE).  So  join  the  SCORE  session  during  the  BeMSA  NGA  and  get  to  know  the  Belgian  Research  Exchange!    

c) Projects  (NL)  Tijdens  deze  workshop  zal  ten  eerste  kort  de  werking  van  SOS  Gent  worden  uitgelegd.  Wegens  het  grote  succes   in   Gent   is   immers   vanaf   eind   vorig   semester   een   aparte  werkgroep   voor   SOS   opgericht.   Deze   is  vervolgens  nog  eens  verder  onderverdeeld   in  verschillende  werkgroepen  die   zich  elk  met  andere  zaken  bezighouden.    In   een   tweede   deel   gaan   we   dieper   in   op   de   lessen   zelf   waarbij   we   een   aantal   onderwerpen   zoals  seksualiteit,   puberteit,   relaties,   SOA,   zelfbeeld   etc.   op   een   interactieve   manier   gaan   aankaarten.   Deze  kunnen  later  tijdens  de  sessies  in  de  middelbare  scholen  worden  toegepast.  Ervaring  en  training  zijn  dan  ook  de  beste  manier  om  studenten  op  te  leiden.

LC  Meeting  time   After  lunch  the  Local  Committees  get  some  time  to  prepare  the  plenary  debate.  So  join  your  LC  and  join  the  debate!    Plenary  

 The  plenary  is  the  decision  making  body  of  our  organisation.  Here  motions  get  voted  on  in  order  to  control  the  work  and   the   future   of   our   organisation.   The  motions   are  mixed  with   presentation   of   candidatures   for   vacant   positions,  elections  and  an  update  by  the  members  of  the  Executive  Board  and  the  Team  of  Officials  on  their  work.    If  you  are  new  to  our  organisation  we  will  introduce  you  to  a  more  experienced  member  who  will  provide  you  with  the  necessary  information  to  understand  all  of  the  debates.
