WELCOME TO BRITISH COUNCIL APTIS TEST

PLEASE LISTEN CAREFULLY TO THESE INSTRUCTIONS

1IC placed on the desk throughout the test.Please switch off/put on silent mode your mobile phone/tab.If you need assistance, please raise your hand. Please do not call out.No discussion during the test.Before we start2The test will take about 3 hours and is split into the following components:

Grammar & Vocabulary 25 minutesReading 35 minutesListening 55 minutesSpeaking 13 minutesWriting 50 minutes

During the test your computer will be locked. You will not be able to use any other applications such as spell check or cut and paste.The exams are timed, if you havent finished in time Aptis will automatically close.Listening test you can listen to all the recordings twice except for the final question which can be played once.Cannot amend your answers during the Listening and Speaking components.

Can amend your answers for Grammar, Vocabulary and Reading.

Can edit all your answers to Writing except question 3, which asks you to take part in imaginary internet chat room, please ensure you click the post button.

You can take notes during task 4 of Speaking. Leave any paper used for this task on the desk before you leave the test room.

You can edit all of your answers except for Speaking, Listening and task 3 of Writing. When you have finished a computer component, you need to click Finish and then re-open the program.

PLEASE NOTE

At the end of each component of each component, a message will appear asking if you want to Finish the exam. Please only click this button when you are sure you have finished as you will not be able to change any answers afterwards.

You will be asked to confirm that you want to finish the test component. 7Once you have finished we can give you a short feedback form to complete. Please leave this and your Keycodes slip with the invigilators. Do not take them away with you!If you finish early and you are given permission to leave, do so as quietly as possible.

You can only enter one Keycode per exam.11To launch Aptis, please double click on the desktop icon labeled BRITISH_COUNCIL SecureClient Central

It can take a few minutes for the program to open, please wait until the application is open. To start the test, double click on the icon that says Secure Client on the desktop. This is the software used to start the Aptis test.

No editing can be done once opened.

SpeakingWe need you to test your headsets, especially for the Speaking test.

Click on the Play Button to test the headsetClick on the Video Tab And click on the movieClick on the Microphone tab and test the headset microphoneOnce tested, please click CloseOnce opened please click on the Check System icon. Click on the Play Button to test the headset.If you think the volume on your computer is too low or too high, please raise your hand and we will assist you. Click on the Video Tab and click on the movie. Click on the Microphone tab to test the headset microphone by clicking the Record button and say Hello, testing for Aptis. Please listen back to the recording to make sure the recording is clear. If it is not clear please raise your hand and we will assist you. Once you have finished testing the Audio, Video & Microphone, please click Close. 14If the volume on your computer is too low or too high, please raise your hand and we will assist you.

Do not disconnect the headphones during the test as this will stop the test.

Before you start the Speaking exam, you will need to check the microphone againBefore the Speaking test all candidates are required to perform another sound recording test to make sure the microphone is working and that the candidates are speaking at the correct volume. 16

Download all keycodes as soon as you arrive.

Click on the SecureClient icon that appears on the desktop

Enter the specified candidate Keycode into the boxSelect Download component to take later optionDownloading

Enter the specified candidate Keycode into the boxNow, type in the keycode for the first exam that you have been given and click OK.

17You will now see a screen with your details on it. If any of your details are incorrect (e.g. the spelling of your name), please write the correct details on your Keycode slip. You cannot amend them.Please click accept and then confirm.18In a moment I will give you the PIN code to unlock the test.

The PIN is the same for all of you and is the same for all components.
