-The total amount of goods and materials in a store or factory- Store owners have to know the number of materials or items in the storage areas in order to control losses. - Factory managers need to know how many units of their products are available for the customers - Example: Restaurants need to order more food based on their current supplies and menu needs.
What is Inventory?
"Wal-Mart is one of the great shining examples of what a market economy can achieve."
Wal-Mart
Wal-Mart is the platonic exemplars of the Just-in-Time economy, which prescribes keeping inventories low, maintaining the precise amount of capacity needed, and building and exploiting hyper efficient supply chains.
WHY?
It is the elimination of any inventory of parts. They would arrive just-in-time.There is no need for inventory or stock, either of raw materials or work in progress or finished goods.
Just-In-Time Economy
Wal-Mart is now the driving force behind a movement towards RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology as the successor to bar codes. It is possible to scan many items at the same. This could potentially increase productivity in many ways. It could revolutionize the tracking of items through the supply line.
IT in Wal-Mart
ERP: (Enterprise resource planning) Its purpose is to facilitate the flow of information between all business functions inside the boundaries of the organization and manage the connections to outside stakeholders
EDI: (electronic data interchange) is the structured transmission of data between organizations by electronic means. It is used to transfer electronic documents or business data from one computer system to another computer system, from one trading partner to another trading partner without human intervention.
IT
In VIPS the waiters are taking the order with a palm, and send them directly with an e-mail to the kitchen. In this way you reduce the time of the process. Also the materials used for cooking the food are registered and can be checked any time.
