• Animal Industry: All of the activities involved in producing animals and their products or benefits to meet the needs of people.

• In order to meet the needs of the people that animals benefit, workers in the animal industry must understand:
• The animals that they work with.
• The benefits that the animals provide.

• 1. Animal Production: The production of animals for food and other uses.
• Production is often specialized towards the animals and products being produced.
• Why do you think we need to specialize?

• Livestock: Encompasses mammals raised on farms or ranches for food and other human purposes.
• Cattle, swine, sheep, horses, and goats are often produced on large-scale farms.
• Specialty animals such as llamas or deer are often produced on small-scale farms.

• Poultry: The group name for all domesticated birds used for meat, eggs, and feathers.
• Poultry can also be referred to as birds or fowl.

• 2. Animal Supplies: The area of the animal industry that provides the inputs (goods or products) needed to produce animals.
• These goods are usually produced outside of the farm, and bought by the farmer to produce their animals.
• Examples are feed, medicine, and handling equipment.

• 3. Animal Services: The area of the animal industry that includes professional and technical assistance that producers need and use in efficiently producing animals.
• Examples would be veterinarians, farriers, and shearers.

• 4. Animal Marketing: All of the processes involved in assuring consumers have the desired animal products.
• It includes transporting, grading, selling, and related areas.
• Marketing is the link between the producer and the consumer.

• 5. Animal Processing: The preparation of animals and animal products for human use or consumption.
• The type of processing varies with the product being produced.
• Milk, eggs, wool, and meat go through different processes in preparing them for consumption.
