Introduction to IB Physics: Nature of Science (NOS)

Nature of Science (NOS)

We start our course by studying thecharacteristics of science and theprocess of science. This serves as anintroduction to the Nature ofScience (NOS) in the IB, which is anoverarching theme in the biology, chemistry and physics courses.

You will be working in groups of 5 to6 and prepare a short (max 10min)presentation on a selected topic byWednesday.

You must share your work inOnenote before Wednesday’s lesson.

“The International BaccalaureateOrganization aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young peoplewho help to create a better and morepeaceful world through interculturalunderstanding and respect.”

Characteristics of Science

Group 2

List the characteristics of science. Give a practicalexample of the each principle, different from the ones youhave in the text.

What does it mean when we say that science is reliable, accurate, and valid?

Models and Fields of Science

Group 3

Why do we need different sciences? Can everything bedescribed in terms of physics?

What does a model mean in science? Give examples of amodel in biology, chemistry and physics.

Science, Arts and Personal Factors

Group 5

What do we need science for? What do we need arts for?

Do personal factors affect scientific results? Should they?
