• National CCTV Strategy Board shaping the National CCTV Strategy, formed the foundations of the Surveillance Camera Commissioner's code of practice

• Attempt to ensure high quality fit for purpose evidence from CCTV was effectively used to ensure the safety of the public and to secure prosecutions

• Previous research, however suggested that CCTV cameras were mainly deployed by private owners.

• BSIA research project into the number of UK CCTV cameras and their ownership and use, achieving a raised public profile for all BSIA members

• Research revealed that only 1 in 70 cameras are owned and operated by the Government

• SCC Code of practice served to recommend the best practice and statutory requirements which had to be met

• BSIA ensured that its Form 109 Planning, design, installation and operation of CCTV surveillance systems – Code of practice and associated guidance containing the guiding principles of the SCC

• BS 8495 – “Code of Practice for digital CCTV recording systems for the purpose of image export to be used as evidence”

• Without self-regulation, CCTV quality is not consistent

• Public prosecutions are reliant on the (majority) of private CCTV cameras

• Without attention being directed at quality and fitness for purpose, the benefits of CCTV will not be fully leveraged

• BSIA members are devoted to ensuring the highest possible standards are met.
