    Chapter 2

    Introduction

In this chapter to its needs to finish four task. All the task use the define projection and project tool in

ARC toolbox which are in the ARC catalog as well as ARC map.

Task 1(project a shapefile from a geographic to projected coordinate system)

Objective: to project a shapefile from a geographic coordinate system to a custom projected coordinate

    system.

    Procedure:

The first stage is to define idll.shp by selecting a predefined geographic coordinate system and then

project the shape file onto the idoho tranverse Mercator coordinate system (IDTM). A custom

coordinate system, has the following parameter values. See figure 1.

In the ARC catalog a connection is been made to the chapter 2 database. Base on figure 2. Idd.shp

should be highlighted in the catalog tree. If metadata be click, the FGDC summary information list the

coordinate system as geographic, see figure 3.

In the spatial reference information tab, information shows the coordinate system is

GCS_Assumed_Geographic_1, an assumed coordinate. See figure 1.

To change the coordinate system the first steps is to define the coordinate system for idll.shp . the steps

is from figure 4 until figure 12.

The result is been shown as in figure 12. The coordinate system is change.

Here are the steps to make project idll.shp to the IDTM coordinate system. What to use are; project tool

in the data management tools/projection and transformation/features toolset. The steps as shown in

    Task 2(import a coordinate system)

Objective: to complete the projection information on idll.shp and idtm.shp from task 1.

Procedure: the data that needed; stationsll.shp (contain snow course in IDAHO), a shape file measured

in longitude and latitude values and in decimal degrees.

Procedure: on the metadata tab, statioll.shp must be verify has an assumed geographic coordinate

system. A projection tool be use by double click it and select the input features class by select

stationll.shp then the button of coordinate system been clicked. Then spatial reference properties dialog

be import after that idll.shp be double click to add.

All the diagram show the steps to done the procedure.

On the figure 14, it is the result for this task. Project tool been double click then stationsll.shp be

selected as input features class. Next stationsstm be specify for the output features class after that the

output coordinate system button be click. After that import the sptial refrence properties dialog the

select idm.shp to add it. Lastly the stationstm is now projected onto the same coordinate system as

    idtm.shp.

Task 3(project a shape file by using a predefined coordinate system)

Objective: to create an event layer from now.txt and project the even layer to UTM coordinates system

and lastly save the output as shape file.

Procedure: in this task snow.txt be add to arc map. This is the data that want to create the layer. Then

tools menu be clicked and select add XY data. The input table must be snow.txt, longitude is in X field,

latitude is in Y field. After that the dialog will show that the spatial reference of the input coordinate is

    an unknown coordinate system.

Task 4(convert from one coordinate system to another)

Objective: to convert coordinate system of IDTM to UTM coordinates system.

    Conclusion

After done the entire four task, it can be conclude that all task use the define projection and project

tools in arc toolbox. The define projection tool projects a geographic or projected coordinate system.

Arc toolbox have three option for defining coordinate system first, selecting a predefined coordinate

second importing coordinate system from an existing data set third creating a new coordinate system.

This task also use shape file. Arc toolbox has separate projection tools in the coverage

tools/management /projection toolset to work with coverage. Arc tool box also has a separate tool in

the data management tool/projection and transformation/raster toolset for projection raster.

Finally this chapter teaches us the coordinate system must be use and apply to all the spatial that we

    work.
