Introduction...

Let’s begin this menu with a quote from one of the greatest beer writers the world has seen. Known as ‘The Beer Hunter’ Michael Jackson (no not that one) toured the world in search of great beer until he sadly died in 2007 aged just 65.

“No-one goes into a restaurant and requests “a plate of food please”. People do not simply ask for a glass of wine without specifying, at the very least, whether they fancy red or white, dry or sweet, perhaps sparkling or still. More often they trouble to decide whether the red should be American or Australian, Italian or French, from Burgundy or Bordeaux, and choose a vineyard and year. When their mood switches from grape to grain, these same discerning folk often ask simply for a “beer”, or perhaps name a brand, without thinking about its suitability for the mood or moment.”

If you have a beer style that you enjoy, ask us for a suggestion or tell us the beer you usually drink and we’ll do our best to find you something that you’ll like or maybe we can tempt you to try something completely different and broaden your range a little. Or you can just go for it and try a load of different ones with friends. Feel free to share too. We don’t expect you to buy 2 bottles of a really strong or really expensive or really weird beer, buy one and share with friends, mix it up a bit, push the boundaries and forget the rules!

We’ve done our very best to select a wide range of beer from across the world to suit everyone’s taste. We aim to always have 95% of the bottled menu in stock, sometimes though we are in the hands of producers and importers. Please also check the specials list for our constantly changing range.

Welcome to The Vaults. We’re delighted you’ve found us and hope that you have a great time sharing our passion for quality beer!

SHOULD YOU NEED THEM WE HAVE A SELECTION OF READING GLASSES AVAILABLE IN VARIOUS STRENGTHS

CASK ALESWe pride ourselves on our cask ales and rotate them regularly. There are no permanent features although ales from our own range, Kennet & Avon & Wessex breweries make regular appearances.

Our cask cellar is immediately below the bar and is kept at 12.5 degrees Celcius which means we serve your beer at the perfect temperature between 12.7 & 13.5 degrees.

Our casks are laid down on stillage (racking) and tilted slightly. We do not tilt them again to get the last drop as this would risk serving you a bad pint. So even if we’ve served you the last pint from the pump, it should be in perfect condition and taste as delicious as the first.

Our cellar hygiene is extremely strict. Our pipes are fully sterilised between every cask to prevent cross contamination and yeast build up even if the same beer follows. We do not hurry this process so when a beer runs out during busy periods there will be a delay of at least 15 minutes before a new beer comes on.

Our 6th pump is for a regularly rotating traditional cider usually from the smaller producers in Wiltshire and Somerset. If we ever serve you a draught beer or cider that you think has a problem, please inform us

immediately and we will replace it without question and then investigate. We do our very best to avoid it but we are human!

LAGERIn addition to our fabulous cask ales selection we offer something special for the lager drinkers. Our lager will only ever come from producers that actually ‘lager’ their beers meaning they are stored and conditioned at very low temperature for a period of 4 to 6 weeks and using the finest of ingredients. The majority of lager served in most pubs is brewed and kegged in just 4 days.

FRUIT BEERWe have many varieties of bottled, Belgian fruit beers in addition to one on draught, the delicious Liefmans Fruitesse. Whilst this is quite popular with the blokes, we often find this is one for the ladies who might otherwise drink spirits and mixers.
