Aloha Makai Oahan,

One of the great rewards about publishing Makai Magazine you would think, is grabbing the feature story “first” or having some of the most talented writers, or even the long hours! No, it‘s actually about getting to meet “you” our readers, at the beach, on the street, and/or around the great events that host some of the most talented water competitors on the planet! THANK YOU for being such great “people of Aloha”. In addition, because of you, we have been publishing for the past 10 years. We will continue to provide you with interesting features of these great people, and their accom-plishments in our waters. They may or may not be household names, but hopefully their stories will inspire and motivate you into the water and doing your thing. Furthermore, we would like to congratulate the 2015 Koa Nui Mens and Womens Grand Champions: Travis Grant & Lindsey Shank. Grant was consistent in the one-of-a-kind race in all stages. The Koa Nui is a three stage race which includes a Stage 1: sprint race (2 mi.); Stage 2: short course from Makapu’u to Hawaii Kai (10 mi.); and on the second day, a Stage 3: 18 mile race from Makapu’u to Magic Island. A shout to Kalei Kahookele who won the Stage 3 race in a spectacular finish. The race is directed by the Paddling Athletes Association (PA’A) which holds the most competitive one-man canoe races in Hawaii; including the Kaiwi Channel Relay from Molokai to Oahu, and the Kaiwi Channel Solo OC-1 World Championship race. Once again, I hope you enjoy reading our labor of aloha. Hope to see you on, in and/or around the water!

A hui hou,

Lono

Her full name is Puamohaluokamahina which literally trans-lates into “unfolding flower under the full moon”. She was born on July 21st, a few days before the full moon, which is the ideal time to sow seeds for a fruitful harvest. So fitting for Mahina as you watch her life unfold before us. Filled with AlohA, Mahina has a spirited enthusiasm that is contagious and full of life.

The Ocean is everything to her with salt water dripping in her veins. Whether she’s diving for shells or swimming out to the Kaimana windsock with her pink Kicks fins. She has a quiver to play with from Bodyboards, Surfboards, SUP’s, paddleboard, OC1, OC2, OC6, Kayak, Canoe Sailing and just about anything that can go in the water. If she goes more than a day without touching the water, her gills start getting dry and she gets an itch to head for the ocean. She’ll walk to the beach from her house in Kaimuki or catch a ride with a friend, she always figures out a way to make it to the ocean with her quests to touch the water

everyday. Her favorite surfboard is her 8’6” Hobie but you’ll see her just as stoked on an 8’ Wavestorm Surfboard from Costco that she’ll grab a paddle and dance effortlessly on the waves out at Sand Bar Suping in front of the Outrigger Canoe Club or out at Kawela Bay. The pure joy and stoke you see in her when she’s on the waves is reminiscent of Gerry Lopez’s quote. “The Best Surfer is the one having the most fun!” Mahina has own personal style that is so graceful and smooth it looks like she’s doing the Hula on the waves, effortlessly dancing on the nose of her board. Mahina has won her share of contest, awards and trophies but it’s really her spirit of AlohA inside and out of the water that shines bright. She’ll tell you that some of her Best days were spent surfing out at Sandbar after school with her family and friends, cheering each other on, sharing waves together with Diamond Head in the forefront and the sunset heading for the green flash on the horizon. Gerry would always say “If it could be bought with money in Hawaii, its cheap. The best things about Hawaii are priceless and are available to everyone. Especially the ocean and all her good kine Mana that she bestows in all of us. “ I think Mahina fig-ured it out too and it doesn’t get any better than sharing it with your Ohana and friends.

Her fashion sense and power shopping skills is from her Fashionmomof3 with favorite brands like Roxy, Mikoh , Accacia and Ivivva by Lululemon. She has her own personal style and it’s not unusual for her to modify hand me downs, with her scissors and sewing machine, embellishing it with her own unique look to come out with some-thing fresh. Complimenting it with her hand made jewelry from shells hand picked from the sea. She has a unique style that is defi-nitely her own yet deeply rooted in Hawaii. She can be “stylin" in the latest fashion but is also right at home with her “bodobodo” clothes, puka t-shirt and slippas.

Her favorite place to eat is of course Sushi King. It’s their family business that her Baba started over 20 years ago serv-ing multiple generations of Hawaii the best Japanese food in town. If not in the water, its not unusual to see Mahina and her brother Kai helping their Baba at Sushi

King, waiting on people, bussing tables or washing dishes. You’ll also see her practic-ing her maki sushi rolls from time to time behind the sushi counter.

Some of her other favorite foods is Chicken Long rice, especially from Ono’s Hawaiian Food down the street from her house on Kapahulu Ave.You’ll also see her frequenting the Saturday Farmers Market at KCC where she would seek out her favorite fruits in season like Pataya Dragon Fruit and Lilikoi. She’ll pick up fresh Hanalei Kulolo, colored carrots for Kup’s, Kale and beets to juice and local oranges too. On Tuesday she’ll frequent the KCC Farmers Market to pick up Obake Anthuriums for her Baba and Sushi King along with the best wood burning pizza from Bonfire Pizza. Flower arrangements is another one of her many skills. Her latest discovery is the Ban’an Juice Bar and Smoothies Truck on Monsarrat Ave. right around the corner from her house. David Rochlen turned her on to it with her favorite flavor being Lilikoi when it’s in season. If you haven’t tried Ban’an from Molokai, she swears it’s a must try for everyone! She also has a green thumb. Growing her own fruits and vegetables for the family in her little organic garden. Imagine the pos-sibilities of Hawaii’s future with the youth of today modeling the way for a sustainable Hawaii. More than buying local is growing local.

Mahina has a diverse group of friends from favorite Aunties like Aunty Sheryl, Aunty Heather, Aunty Heidi, Aunty Miko, Aunty Annie and many more who all love and cherish the times they can spend with her. She’s as comfortable talking story with her aunties lunching at Mariposa in Neiman Marcus as she is with her own peers sharing a tuna sandwich on the beach. Some of her closest friends are David Rochlen, Ollie Hope and Nicole Yarborough.Ollie and Mahina are quite the Entre-preneurs. If you hear them talking about business concepts and their next business ventures together you would think they were two college graduates from Business School working on their latest Business Plans. They have a plethora of ideas from Shell Jewelry, Sea Salt Bath Scrubs, Candles, Swimwear, etc. You can see the birth of their conglomerate Empire start to take shape. The future of Hawaii is in good hands with Mahina and her friends. They defi-nitely Dream with their eyes wide open to make all their Dreams come true.

Family is everything to Mahina. Her closest and Best Friends are her brothers Kauanoeikekailoa (Kai) and Kalehuaku-ponoikahliau (Kup’s), Kai and Mahina will surf together and do just about everything together in and out of the ocean. Kup’s will play in the ocean but his real passion is Baseball and Sports. He said he’ll be playing for the Dodger’s when he grows up and if you’ve ever seen him play you wouldn’t bet against him with his single minded focus and determination. He’s the only person I saw who could hit a real overhand tossed baseball when he was still a toddler. He’ll remind you of a young Marcus Mariota, who is his idol and prob-ably one of the best role models for all of Hawaii. I’m sure he’s slated to play for the University of Oregon Ducks before going on to play for the Dodgers.

Photography is one of Mahina’s newest passions. She’s as comfortable behind the camera as she is in front of it. Over the years she worked hard and saved up all of her money to buy her favorite SLR Camera. It’s going to be an incredible journey cap-turing all the goodness of Hawaii through Mahina’s eyes.

Her favorite place to dive for shells is Sandy Beach with the Rochlen’s, Kawela Bay with the Hope’s and Molokai with Uncle Scott and Aunty Sheryl. She’ll collect them to make her own hand made jewelry that she’ll sell and/or make gifts to give to family and friends. She also loves using abalone shells, embellishing them with her special touches.

I remember reading this quote from Pinky Thomson at the Canoe Halau at Maunalua Bay.“A thriving community of healthy individu-als and families informed about their rich heritage and culture living in a state of lokahi (unity) and making informed choices and responsible decisions in a safe island society that is Pono.”

Hawaii is so special in so many ways but one of the best Gifts it shares with the world is through its people and their AlohA Spirit. The Hawaiians would say: “AlohA Aku, AlohA Mai. Malama Aku, Malama Mai.” In giving love, we receive love. In caring for others, we will always be taken care of. Mahina truly lives and surfs with AlohA every day and is one of good things about Hawaii.

One of the smartest guys I know is Grubby Clark. I believe the sport of surfing owes a giant debt of gratitude for all that his company Clark Foam did to further the advancement of the modern surfboard. For 45 years Clark Foam made substantial contributions to surfboard design and all that it entails. Grubby is modest about his wide range of knowledge but usually has good, valuable advice to offer when it’s requested and just as often when it’s unsolicited but needed. A good friend of ours, Walter Hoffman, is pretty smart about some things but somehow manages to find his way into some genuinely harebrained schemes. One time Walter told Grubby and I about an investment that sounded so good he sank a lot of his money into it but discovered too late it was a scam and all his money was gone.

Grubby ripped right into him.“Walter, how many times do I have to tell you, if it

sounds too good to be true that’s probably exactly what it is…too good to be true. How can you be so dumb all the time?”

Walter, who was stung by the loss of his money more than by Grubby’s remarks, still took some offense.

“Yeah Grubby, you know everything about everything, don’t you.”

Feeling a little sorry for Walter, I added in my two cents worth to try to elevate his low mood,

“I bet I know something Grubby doesn’t know.” They both looked at me. “Okay, what’s the sound of one hand clapping?” I

asked. Walter immediately perked up.“Yeah Grubby, you big brain, answer that one…shit,

what is the sound of one hand clapping? It doesn’t make a

sound, right? Hey, that’s a good question.” Walter was smiling and laughing now but Grubby

continued to look at me, quizzically I should say, his characteristic eye twitch going full bore as often it does when he thinks hard. Walter got up and went home, his spirits rekindled but Grubby still hadn’t said a word. I could tell he was still thinking about what I asked him. Finally he started laughing and said to me:

“Where did you come up with that one…that was really good. I think that’s the best question anyone has ever asked.” What is the sound of one hand clapping? It’s a question I have been thinking about for 30 years. It is the quintessential question asked of all Zen students by their teachers. I’m sure there is an answer but I’m sure it’s not one that can be put into words. Zen is like that, beyond the reach of mere words.

To understand the concept, one needs to consider its beginnings. The roots of Zen Buddhism took hold in Nepal in the 6th century BC where a prince named Siddhartha Gautama was born into a wealthy royal family. His life was pampered and sheltered but outside the palace he saw four things that made a huge impression on him. He saw an old man, a sick man, a corpse and a monk. The first three symbolized the suffering of mankind and the fourth he saw as his destiny. Giving up all his worldly possessions, he became an ascetic. He looked to teachers first then went on his own. Coming back to the Middle Path from the extreme asceticism after 6 years, he decided to meditate to find the answers to his questions about why man must suffer. After 49 days under the Bodhi tree he achieved his great Enlightenment or Satori, the same

taught to become enlightened, to be free from suffering because of greed, anger and ignorance, then to help others do the same thing. Understand that everything is subject to change and that all suffering and unhappiness is a result of being attached to things or circumstances that change. By getting rid of these attachments especially the ego or false notion of “I,” suffering will end. Central to Zen is ‘intuitive’ understanding. Words and sentences have no fixed meaning and logic is often irrelevant. Meaning is never what it seems and may appear to be nonsense, but this is because the meaning is all between the lines. Buddha means ‘one who is awake’ and this is the main aim, to become awake and aware of the true nature of self. So how does this apply to surfing? Surfing is an easy way to meditate. Immersion in the ocean creates a connection with nature that is strong and direct. Successful surfing requires a person to empty his mind and connect with the wave he is riding. Awareness increases, breathing becomes slow, regular and rhythmic and the mind, body and spirit turn into a receptacle for cosmic natural energy. Go ahead and laugh, but the more someone surfs, the more he becomes aware that something like this is happening.

Surfing is Zen. It is a way of seeing waves without abstractions and spontaneously being with them as they really are. A surfer lets it happen, becomes a part of it, without being separate from it. Zen is surfing, the naked reality of experience, something that cannot be explained with words but must be felt. “Be here now” not only is it the only way to surf, it’s the only way to live. Why does surfing feel so good? It’s because we are ridding ourselves of many of the attachments that cause discontentment. When we get rid of ‘I’, we will perhaps get the same thing Buddha got under the Bodhi tree and then we will know what the sound of one hand clapping really is.

Buddha state that all followers of Zen are seeking. Because of its wordless nature, he was reluctant at first to speak of it. Before long, however, he spoke to his disciples at the Deer Park in Benares. From there he continued as a teacher for the rest of his life. He died at 80 years old after eating spoiled food.

According to Buddhist writings, Gautama was neither the first Buddha nor the last. Six preceded him and 13 followed. His teachings are based upon The Four Noble Truths. One is the Truth of Suffering, two is the Truth of the Cause of Suffering, three is the Truth of the End of Suffering and four is the Truth of the Path to the End of Suffering. The Eightfold Path is: right understanding, right thoughts, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration.

Several centuries after Buddha, his teachings developed into two main schools of Buddhism; Theravada or Hinayana and Mahayana. Around the 1st century AD, Nagarjuna, one of the greatest masters next to Buddha himself, founded the Middle Path School or Madhyamika with his Doctrine of Sunyata or Emptiness. It is from this school that Zen developed.

Several hundred years later, Maitreya first founded then Ansanga and Vasubandhu established the Vijnanavada or Mind-Only school. In the late 5th and early 6th century, Bohdidharma, an Indian Buddhist master founded the Chan School in China that was a combination of Taoism and Buddhism. About 1200 AD, this school of teaching became Zen in Japan. Bohdidharma’s basic message goes something like this: “Not relying on the words and letters, Teachings are transmitted outside the Scriptures. Pointing directly into one’s mind, then one can see his true nature and attains Buddha hood.”

There are different methods and different schools but the goal is the same: to learn and to practice what Buddha

LOS ANGELES, CA/USA - The con-clusion of the 2014/2015 World Surf League (WSL) Big Wave Tour (BWT) saw Makuakai Rothman (HAW) become BWT Champion. The Hawaiian previously spent several years battling on the WSL Qualify-ing Series before being offered a wildcard to compete in the BWT this season. Rothman surpassed all expectations, finish-ing his first Big Wave season with 20,833 points on the rankings, almost 7,000 points ahead of this year’s runner up Gabriel Vil-laran (PER).

“I feel amazing to be the WSL Big Wave Champion, it’s a dream come true,” said Rothman. “I wasn’t invited to all events and here I am, the world champion this year as a wildcard”.

“It took a lot of determination, hard work and I came out victorious,” continued Rothman. “It’s probably the best feeling in the world to be a world champion.”

“It’s another world title for Hawaii,” said BWT Commissioner Peter Mel. “Makua expressed early on that he wanted to par-ticipate in a big way and his dream was to be part of the tour. So, definitely, congratu-lations are in order.”

Rothman commenced his title campaign by claiming his first BWT victory at the opening event of the 2014/2015 season, the Billabong Pico Alto event in Peru on Thursday, July 3, 2014. The newcomer battled 40-foot seas and a field of the world’s best watermen, showcasing com-mitment, strength and confidence to take the win and announce himself as a major threat on the BWT.

Rothman, who became a new father just three days before the event, left straight from the hospital to hop on a plane and travel to Peru - a risk that would pay off in a career-changing win for the new family man as well as an ignited fervor in challeng-ing for the big wave crown.

“I’m just stoked to be here and stoked to win,” said Rothman of his victory in Peru. “This is my first event ever on the Big Wave World Tour and I can’t put into words what this means.”

Rothman solidified his place atop the rankings with a runner-up finish at the

second and final BWT event of the season, the Punta Galea Challenge in the Basque Country. On Thursday, December 11, 2014, Rothman fought through to the Final where he battled eventual winner Nic Lamb (USA). The pair traded nine-point rides before Lamb took the win with a Per-fect 10 and the Hawaiian came in second place. The result was enough for Rothman to secure his maiden title and he becomes the second Big Wave Champion from Hawaii , after Jamie Sterling, since the tour was founded in 2009.

“My goal was to win the World Title this year. My whole life I’ve dedicated myself to big waves,” Rothman said. “There’s a lot of talented surfers on the tour, a lot of people that I look up to, that push me to be my best. To defend this title again and come out victorious is going to take a lot of hard work.”

The 2014/2015 BWT season was divided into Southern Hemisphere and Northern Hemisphere components, each hosting three possible events. The Southern Hemi-sphere season ran from April 15 to August 31, 2014 with event options in Chile, Peru and South Africa. The Northern Hemi-sphere window ran from October 15, 2014 to February 28, 2015, with possible events in Hawaii, Mexico and the Basque Country. A team of experts track swell systems all over the world waiting for those that will produce waves in the 30-foot-and-larger

This will be its 29th year; yes I said 29!From its humble beginning in 1985 as a runner’s race and swim, it has now grown to be one of the most sought after events in the community generating scholarship funds, opportunities to special needs groups, community services ie. beach clean ups, mangrove clean ups, Hawaiian language and culture, preserving canoe paddling in the Hawaiian koa canoe, and perpetuating the Hawaiian sport of kings!
