There are countless reasons to be thankful this Thanksgiving and those in the hospitality industry are getting

ready for a bountiful feast with their loved ones and In The Biz@ family.

Some ITB@ employees will be serving up drinks and hearty meals to their cus-tomers this holiday, while others will be enjoying their own traditions.

Vanessa Lo, a bartender at McSorley’s Beach Pub, plans to have dinner with her “hospitality” family and chow down on some good home cooked mashed potatoes.

“Someone at work always eats early and then brings all the leftovers back to McSorley’s so we can share the food here,” says Vanessa.

The local bartender is also looking for-ward to the busy night before Thanksgiving party at McSorley’s. “We will have pitcher and bucket specials. I am thankful I found an awesome spot to work. I love the people I work with. It’s a kick ass team here.”

Falon Hoak, a bartender at SandBar, will be cooking up some of her delicious pumpkin pie from scratch, then napping and eating again, and finally sharing the recipe with her ITB@ co-workers. “I wish health, wealth and happiness for everyone ITB@ and all around. I am thankful that I work in the industry because I get to meet a lot of different interesting people.”

This Thanksgiving, “Jamaican” Greg Hew, who bartenders at Parrot Lounge, will be watching the Eagles game while serving his customers a Thanksgiving feast and cocktails at the Parrot Lounge. He will also be cooking up a turkey for his family and enjoying his sister’s curry goat dish.

“I like to spend the day with my family, and I have been making the turkey for my family every year for the last 14 years. The holiday makes you appreciate family, and ITB@ is one big hospitality family. If I don’t have to work and I stop by another bar, I always thank my bartenders and servers for working that day,” says Greg, who has worked at Parrot Lounge for 25 years and

the bar is celebrating its 44th year in busi-ness on November 20th. “I am thankful to work in this industry because I get to meet a lot of different people, not just tourists but those who also work outside of the hospitality industry. I get to connect with people and connect them together.”

Johnny D’Angelo, a server at T-Mex Cantina, has much to be thankful for this year. “I am thankful that I have a roof over my head and a nice car to drive around the ladies. This holiday, I will spend it with my family which is our tradition.”

Ritchine Chrispin, a hostess at the Ale House in Fort Lauderdale, is thankful for her job. “I enjoy my job because it’s really fun and I enjoy meeting new people and having a conversation with them. It helps build your confidence. This Thanksgiving I am going to have a huge party and eat my favorite meal, a special pasta dish made with red and green peppers and mayo.”

Whatever your holiday tradition, be sure to spend this Thanksgiving with your loved ones and be thankful for all that you have this year. In The Biz@ Magazine wishes everyone a happy and healthy Thanksgiving!

ODEL Livia

De Oliveira

What is your Name? livia De oliveira, People call me liv and livy...as long as you don’t call me olivia i’m happy.

Where are you originally from? i was born in Bra-zil, but lived a good chunk of my life in Boston, MA.

Where do you work? i work at The sports Barn

What is your position? I’m a part time bartender, starting my real estate career and I’m a full time mother

How long have you been inTheBiz®? i’ve been inTheBiz® for 11 years and love it!

How do you spend your free time? i spend most of my time outside of work with baby Gianna, who’s only 10 months old...they grow up to fast for you to miss a single day of their lives!

Why did you start working in the Hospitality indus-try? i started at age 18, it was a way of having fun hanging out and making money at the same time, it’s a great combination!

What is your favorite drink? it depends... i like dry white wine w dinner, but if i am out for the night, i can always start with a nice ketel one dirty martini, made to perfection.

What is your favorite part of being inTheBiz®? i’d say my favorite part of the job is the ability to work on my people skills, like dealing with a sad or depressed customer and being able to make that person have a better day, maybe just by listening or providing great conversation, and watching them feel a little better about him/herself (or maybe it was just the drink lol)

What makes you so good at your job? I’m atten-tive to the bar, ability to multitask is definitely im-portant when you want to keep up with a full bar and make sure everyone is happy, and of course, always keeping a smile on my face.

What advise do you have for new bartenders coming into the business? i would advise them to take the course. it helped me a lot in the begin-ning, it helped me learn to mix drinks as well as understanding about customer service, who you should serve drinks to and how to refuse to serve to someone that has had too much to drink, things like that. everything else comes with experience, if you are good at it there’s a lot of money to be made. Go for it :)

After attending one or many of these events, your local theater will be playing a mix of hit movies that you won’t want to miss! Get your popcorn and grab your friends for a night at the movies. In the film, ‘John Wick’, an ex-hitman comes out of retirement to track down the gangsters that took everything from him. With New York City as his bullet-riddled playground, JoHN Wick (Keanu Reeves) is a fresh and stylized take on the “assassin genre”. The movie, ‘NIGHTCRAWLER’, is a pulse-pounding thriller set in the nocturnal underbelly of contemporary Los Angeles. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Lou Bloom, a driven young man desperate for work who discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime journalism. Finding a group of freelance camera crews who film crashes, fires, murder and other mayhem, Lou muscles into the cut-throat, dangerous realm of nightcrawling -- where each police siren wail equals a possible windfall and victims are converted into dollars and cents. Aided by Rene Russo as Nina, a veteran of the blood-sport that is local TV news, Lou thrives. In the breakneck, ceaseless search for footage, he becomes the star of his own story. If you like scary flicks, check out ‘ouija’, where a group of friends must confront their most terrifying fears when they awaken the dark powers of an ancient spirit board. Stiles White directs the supernatural thriller that is produced by Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form (The Purge, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,

Friday the 13th) alongside Blumhouse Productions’ Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity and Insidious series, The Purge), Bennett Schneir (Battleship) and Hasbro. In the comedy, ‘kirk cameron’s saving christmas’, Kirk is enjoying the annual Christmas party extrava-ganza thrown by his sister (Bridgette Ridenour) until he realizes he needs to help out Christian (Darren Doane), his brother-in-law who has a bad case of the bah-humbugs. Kirk’s fresh look at Christmas provides Christian the chance to see Christ is where He has always been: at the center of our Christmas celebra-tions and traditions. In ‘st. Vincent’, Maggie (Mc-Carthy), a single mother, moves into a new home in Brooklyn with her 12-year old son, Oliver (Lieberher). Forced to work long hours, she has no choice but to leave Oliver in the care of their new neighbor, Vincent (Murray), a retired curmudgeon with a penchant for alcohol and gambling. An odd friendship soon blos-soms between the improbable pair. Together with a pregnant stripper named Daka (Watts), Vincent brings Oliver along on all the stops that make up his daily routine – the race track, a strip club, and the local dive bar. Vincent helps Oliver grow to become a man, while Oliver begins to see in Vincent something that no one else is able to: a misunderstood man with a good heart.

This November, in The Biz Magazine@ wishes everyone a great month, a wonderful Veterans Day and Happy Thanksgiving!

Where are you originally from? I am orginally from Peekskill, NY... but I’ve Lived in south Florida for about 10 years now.

Where do you work? I work at 2 places, Soprano’s Dueling Piano Bar, and Fat Tuesdays, both of them are in Beach Place, on beautiful Fort Lauderdale Beach!

What do you do as your job? At Soprano’s I am a bartender, and a barback, at Fat Tuesday’s I work Front door Security

How long have you been inTheBiz®? I have been in the industry 13 years. I started when I was 16 working in NY pizzerias. I started out as a pizza delivery boy.

What are your hobbies outside of work? I Enjoy Comedy and all different types of music from Indee Rap To New York Hardcore. I love Longboarding, I’m a Craft beer enthusiast (I’ve collected over 200 beers) and I’m a Diehard Sons Of Anarchy fan ( :( last season)

Why did you decide to work in the hospitality industry? Since I started working at 16 I’ve always been in hospitality. It has always been my fallback job and a quick cash getter.

What is your favorite Drink? I enjoy Irish breakfast with Jameson backed with a strip of bacon! Yum! Or a Boiler Maker With a Pint of Dogfish Head and a shot of Wild Turkey Dropped in the Glass!

What is your favorite part of the job? What skills do you possess that make you good at your job? Experience, I’ve worked as a delivery boy, host, barback, busser, food runner, banquet server, table server, to-go server, an expo, dishwasher, line cook, and a lead cook. Wherever I am in a restaurant, bar or club I can be helpful and bring knowledge and experience to any position I’m working.

What advice would you give to people just starting out in the industry? The industry is a revolving door, when one door closes another is always sure to open. Be sure to save during season so you are ready for the summer!

is there anything else that you would like to add? “Here’s to lying, cheating, stealing, and drinking… If you’re going to lie, lie for a friend. If you’re going to cheat, cheat death. If you’re going to steal, steal a heart. If you’re going to drink, drink with me!”

florida panthers Off toEncouraging Start to 2014 Season

Miami heat Off to Scintillating Start in 2014 Season

No LeBron James.

No problem.

After the Miami Heat organization was stunned by the free agent departure of their franchise cornerstone this offseason, many analysts weren’t sure how they would recover.

Sure, the Heat still retained All Stars Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade, but losing the league’s best player is no easy feat to rebound from.

Well, the sample size is small, but the new look Heat are off to a scintillating start to this young 2014-15 NBA season.

Miami is off to a 3-0 start and the only un-defeated team left in the Eastern Conference

as of the writing of this article.

They have been able to accomplish this through team ball, gritty defense and seem-ingly already strong chemistry.

The Heat have been led by Bosh, who earned Eastern Conference Player of the Week Honors, after averaging 25.7 points, 11.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.33 steals in 36.7 minutes while shooting 47.9 percent from the field in the first week of the season.

Bosh has thrived as the Heat’s go to scorer and looks poised to lead the team this season.

However, Bosh has also received great help from Wade, Mario Chalmers, Norris Cole, Shawne Williams and the Heat’s role players.

The team’s balanced scoring and team ap-proach has helped them in their fast start.

While it is a long season and the Heat have

only played three games, there is no doubt that this an encouraging start.

If the Heat can continue to get great play from their stars in Bosh and Wade, and have the role players contribute while still playing in unison, Miami could surprise some people with how far they go this year.

Last year was clearly a rebuilding year for the young Florida Panthers franchise.

After wining the division and reaching the playoffs in 2011-12, the team went through two rough years as they went through a youth movement.

Now, all the free agent additions and promising draft picks seem to be com-

ing together in this young 2014 NHL season.

The Cats stand at 4-2-3 with 11 points as of the writing of this article.

They have won 2 straight games and are doing it with dominant defense and goalie play.

Goalie Roberto Luongo, who returned to the team last season, is off to a great start this season.

The Panthers are currently 3rd in the league in goals against and a large part of that is be-cause of Luongo’s strong play.

With Brad Boyes and Jussi Jokinen off to solid starts and budding star Jonathan Huber-deau poised for a breakout year, Florida seems ready to have a rebound season.

Luongo, along with several other Panthers veterans, have all said this team expects to make the playoffs with their combination of veteran savvy and young stars to lead the team.

While they still need to shore up some offen-sive issues and come together more as a team, this Panthers team is arguably the best one of the past five years.

If they can bring it all together, the Panthers should be in competition for a playoff spot.
