DAVID ALAN DAVIES, ASLA, BCSLA, CSLA Landscape Architecture Urban Design Master Planning

Born the son of an architect, my life has been dominated by the influence of design, nature, and culture. From an early age, I realized that my love for design was from the outside in. Being more passionate about the space between buildings, I strive to allow the influence of the natural environment push outwards rather than from within. Growing up in Ottawa and relocating to Vancouver, I have been fortunate to have lived in two of the most beautifully planned cities in the world. I am a professional landscape architect whose focus is outside; shaping environments that bring enjoyment, scale, and comfort to people who seek relief in the essence of the natural beauty of our great Canadian outdoors.

I seek to create uncluttered coherent spaces respectful of the physical complexities that a project may impose. I am a strong proponent of hand drawn graphics that quickly and effectively convey a range of design alternatives and encourage client interaction, especially at the conceptual stage of the design process. Having lived, studied, and worked all over the world, I have an extensive memory of countless cultural and design influences. I aspire to understand the physical and cultural influences exerted by any context and translate these into a strong and meaningful design solution. The intent of any design is to create an effective solution that complements natural systems yet exceeds client aspirations and program requirements.

A considerable amount of work has been done throughout eastern China. I have been engaged by many Chinese partners and developers, to develop theme parks, resorts, and residential retail/commercial communities.

In 2013, I was asked to produce a physical master plan for a new community of over 2,500 dwelling units, a hot spring resort, 3 hotels, a theme park, farmers market, shopping village, and an 18-hole golf course and spa. The entire project worked around an existing fresh water body that was modified to maximize resident and visitor experience.

These drawings illustrate a physical master plan for of a new waterfront community of over 500 dwelling units, a shopping/dining village, a major theme park, casino. and an 18-hole golf course and spa. The residential community was integrated with a series of canals which following the road-way grid and would be accessible to community residents and visitors alike.

In 2013, I was asked to produce a physical master plan for of a new residential community of over 150 dwelling units. These drawings illustrate conceptual stage pedestrian and vehicular circulation patterns and the effort made to preserve significant stands of existing mature trees.

These drawings illustrate a conceptual landscape master plan for a large private residence, guest house, and pool house. The client wanted a pool, BBQ area, vegetable/perennial garden, and place to play basketball. Working off the axis of the major residence, I developed a linear progression of pool, hot tub, linear weir and associated open space. Existing mature trees were retained and integrated into additional plantings to reinforce the property borders and spatial zones established within the property.
