    Terms of Reference for Internship

    ToR No.: INTTDTIS2010 29 Deadline for Applications: 1.5 months before starting date Division/Section/Unit:

    Transport Infrastructure Section

    Transport Division

    Duration: 2 6 months Period: As soon as possible, anytime during 2010

    Responsibilities:

    Under the supervision of a staff member of the Transport Infrastructure Section, Transport Division, the intern will undertake the following assignments during the period of his/her internship:

    1. Preparation of an analytical study/ internship report on selected issues in dry port development in Asia and the Pacific. The detailed outline and contents of the study will be defined at the beginning of the internship.

    Related activities may include, for example:

    a) Literature review on best practices in the development of dry ports;

    b) Collection of data/information dry ports in ESCAP region;

    c) Preparation or documentation of case studies;

    d) Discussion of cost/benefits, development, and operation of selected dry ports.

    2. Assist in day to day work of the Division: The intern is expected to participate and familiarize him/herself, to a limited extent, with administrative work of the division and other tasks, which are typical of UN organizations. This may include for example, searching requested information, preparing inputs to presentations for professional staff, drafting correspondence letters and reports, etc.

    Learning opportunities during the course of the internship:

    After the internship, the INTERN will be able to: 1. Demonstrate an intermediate to advanced level of skills in the transport issues of selected ESCAP

    countries; 2. Work on own initiative and as a member of a team; 3. Work with people of different cultural background and professional experience; 4. Gain practical knowledge on the role of UN and international institutions in promoting transport

    cooperation at global, regional, and subregional levels. 5. Get direct exposure to the developmental work, overall knowledge, and understanding of the UN

    system; 6. Acquire an understanding of, and exposure to, the UN Mandates including Millennium Development

    Goals and the Almaty Programme of Action.

    Education: Graduate (Master degree) / postgraduate students in Economics, law, public policy /administration,

    development studies,

    transport,

    or

    other

    relevant

    subject.

    General

    interest

    in

    regional

    economic

    development and cooperation.

    NOTE: The eligibility criteria of the United Nations Internship Programme require that applicants be CURRENTLY enrolled in a second university degree (i.e. Masters) or higher level at the time of application and during the internship.

    Indicative skills and qualifications:

    Experience and interest in analytical work. Understanding of issues related to international cooperation, preferably in the transport sector. General interest in development issues.

    Very good knowledge of English. Knowledge of Chinese or Russian would be an advantage.
