Introduction

This 2015 Internship prospectus contains Oceanography internshipdescriptions, the primary investigator (USNA professors or Mili-tary leads), offered dates and locations, special activities (like fieldwork, lab work, modeling), how to get in contact with the respectiveprimary investigator, and how to apply.

Overview

All internships listed below have been vetted and approved how-ever, for summer training credit, internship must be greater than 20

days. Be aware that all organic USNA training requirements (PlebeDetail, Weapons Detail, Summer Seminar, STEM Camp, etc.) takepriority over internships. If you are assigned to an internship (evenif that internship is granted summer training credit) and you are as-signed to an organic USNA training requirement, you will have to doyour internship in lieu of leave.

Oceanography Internship Descriptions

The Internship Program provides hands-on training and expe-rience through participation in field work and agency assignmentsthat allow for the practical application of academic knowledge andthe development of critical thinking skills necessary of a Naval Of-ficer. Midshipmen work side by side with scientists in areas such asnumerical modeling, impact assessment, data collection, sensor de-velopment, and decision support as they experience the day-to-dayworkings of National and Naval Meteorology and Oceanographycenters.

Internships not only provide practical training but alsoencouragement, inspiration, and continuing mentors for the nextgeneration of Oceanography leadership.

World-class oceanographic researchcenter dedicated to discovering andcommunicating exciting and criticalscience about our planet for the benefitof society.

Familiarization with ocean observing technology andthe study of coastal ocean processes and numerical modeling ofthese processes. Midshipmen will gain hands-on experience withdeployment and/or recovery of ocean gliders (autonomous vehicleswhich collect oceanographic data throughout the water column) andwill learn how to use this data to better understand wind-drivenupwelling, variability of ocean currents, phytoplankton blooms, andother coastal processes which can impact naval operations.

U.S. Coast Survey provides nauticalcharts that ensure safe and efficientmaritime commerce on America’soceans and coastal waters, and in theGreat Lakes.

Midshipmen will accompany NOAA coastal survey teams

during the collection of hydrographic survey data. A significantportion of the internship may involve fieldwork usually on small

watercraft. The midshipmen will participate in the analysis of dataand the preparation of final products (e.g. harbor charts), gaining anunderstanding of the production cycle of critical navigational aidsand the environmental data required to construct these products.

Deep Diving Technology: the Exosuit

The internship will involve training and familiarization

with operation of the newest generation Atmospheric Diving Suit(ADS) known as the Exosuit. The training will be conducted at the J.F. White Dive Training Center in Stoughton, MA and the Woods HoleOceanographic Institution pier in Woods Hole, MA. Midshipmenmajors will be assigned to a designated point of contact at J. F. Whitefor familiarization with ongoing advanced dive training and oceanoperations. Midshipmen will then become involved in preparing theExosuit for deployment, development, and evaluation of specializedtooling and operational interaction between the Exosuit and otherdeep diving tools and technologies such as Remotely Operated Vehi-cles (ROVs) and small submersibles.

Deep Ocean Exploration aboard E/V Nautilus

E/V Nautilus is owned and operatedby the Ocean Exploration Trust (OET),a nonprofit founded in 2008 by Dr.Robert Ballard to engage in ocean ex-ploration and research, advance oceantechnology, and promote education inthe fields of science, technology, engi-neering, and mathematics (STEM). - Seemore at: http://www.nautiluslive.org

Familiarization with operation of remotely operated ve-hicles (ROVs) for deep ocean exploration. These operations willbe conducted aboard the Exploration Vessel Nautilus. MidshipmenOceanography majors will be assigned to the Ocean ExplorationTrust’s Corps of Exploration aboard Nautilus as ROV Navigators,and will therefore be involved in coordinating the efforts of thebridge team, ROV engineers, and science team to correctly positionthe ship and ROVs for deep ocean operations. ROV Navigators willalso be responsible for providing daily weather briefs to the watchteams. Ocean Engineering majors will be assigned to E/V Nautilusas ROV co-pilots, and will therefore be involved in preparing theROVs for deployment, operating the ROVs while they are deployed,and conducting post-recovery maintenance.

The mission of the Energy Departmentis to ensure America’s security andprosperity by addressing its energy,environmental and nuclear challengesthrough transformative science andtechnology solutions.

This internship will involve policy analyses related to en-ergy issues within the Office of Oil and Gas, in the Department ofEnergy. This office works on current issues and assignments thatchange from week to week, depending on what is happening in theglobal and domestic energy markets and with the world, in general.Due to the dynamic nature of work flow, it is difficult to outline aspecific project. Broadly speaking, this research focus will focus inone of two arenas: Analysis of world oil and gas markets or Analysisof domestic production of oil and gas resources.

Fleet Numerical (Meteorological and Oceanographic) Center (FNMOC)USNA POC: CDR William Swick;Phone: 3-6564; [email protected]

Located in Monterey, California. FN-MOC is the United States Navy Meteo-rology Modeling facility.

FNMOC is the Department of Defense’s primary central pro-duction site for worldwide computer generated operational meteo-rological and oceanographic analysis and forecast products. With 65

military and 135 civilian personnel, Fleet Numerical is one of a halfdozen internationally recognized operational weather centers andthe world’s leader in global oceanographic and coupled air-oceanforecasting.

The Johns Hopkins University AppliedPhysics Laboratory (APL) has providedcritical contributions to critical chal-lenges with systems engineering andintegration, technology research anddevelopment, and analysis.

This internship will take place in the Force Projection

Sector (FPS) of APL’s Oceanic, Atmospheric and Remote SensingSciences Group. Most of this work will center on the Sea Controlmission objective at APL. This research will focus on: Model devel-opment and theoretical work on sub-mesoscale ocean circulation andocean internal waves and Analysis of data collected from variousplatforms as a tactical aid for surface and undersea combatants.

Michigan State University, Enviro WeatherUSNA POC: Prof. Gina Henderson;Phone: 3-6555; [email protected]

Michigan State Enviro-weather providespest, natural resource, and productionmanagement information to its users.

Based out of Michigan State University, Enviro Weather pro-vides services to the farming and environmental community of thestate. Products of Enviro-weather include weather outlooks for fieldcrops, fruit, trees, turf grass, vegetables, landscapes, nurseries, andweather summaries, including rainfall data, for the last five years.Enviro-weather’s mission statement is to develop and deliver a sus-tainable weather-based information system that helps users makepest, plant production, and natural resource management decisionsin Michigan. The USNA intern will help with data collection, specifi-cally in the area of agro science as it relates to climate change. Areasof research will include agricultural meteorology, potential impactsof climate change on water use for agricultural irrigation, potentialfuture changes in climate, and weather and risk management in agri-cultural production and plant protection.

National Center for Atmospheric Re-search (NCAR) is a federally fundedresearch and development center de-voted to service, research and educationin the atmospheric and related sciences.

The NCAR Undergraduate Leadership Workshop has thepurpose of informing students about exciting research and career op-portunities in the atmospheric and related sciences. The five-day pro-gram establishes informal dialogue between students and researchscientists as the students explore the laboratories, instrumentation,and computing facilities that support studies on weather, climatechange, solar dynamics, the Sun-Earth system, and impacts of severeweather and climate change on societies around the world.

National Disaster Preparedness Training CenterUSNA POC: Assoc Prof Brad Barrett;Phone: 3-6567; [email protected]

The internship will be hosted byNDPTC in Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, which is a uniquelocation that is home to many disastermanagement humanitarian assistance(DMHA)-related operations.

The internship is an intensive educational opportunityfor officer candidates in meteorology, oceanography, GIS, maritimesearch/rescue, and related fields, providing a real-world immersionin the challenges facing the disaster management communities. Dur-ing the 3-week period, the Midshipmen will contribute to researchefforts leading to the development of NDPTC training courses as wellas have the opportunity to attend course deliveries. At the end of theinternship, interns will be expected to submit a 10-page report abouttheir internship experience.

National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA)

Geospatial Intelligence is the ex-ploitation and analysis of imagery andgeospatial information that describes,assesses and visually depicts physicalfeatures and geographically referencedactivities on the Earth.

This internship will involve familiarization with the NGAorganization and mission, and involvement with current researchprojects being undertaken by NGA. Midshipmen involved in this in-ternship will receive formal training in remote sensing, imagery, andgeographical information systems used in the intelligence communityand in the Fleet. They will also learn about the various types of intel-ligence, in addition to geospatial intelligence, they will be briefed onhuman and signals intelligence and the role of intelligence supportin operational mission planning, with emphasis on support to navalforces.

National Geodetic Survey

NGS provides the framework for allpositioning activities in the Nation.The foundational elements - latitude,longitude, elevation, shoreline infor-mation and their changes over time -contribute to informed decision makingand impact a wide range of impor-tant activities including mapping andcharting, navigation, flood risk deter-mination, transportation, land use andecosystem management.

Midshipmen will collect, analyze and/or process geode-tic data relevant to improving position determination. Data col-lection may be via in-situ field collection or remote sensors. Specificapplication of the effects of ocean currents on the geodetic field area particular focus area. Midshipmen will gain an understanding ofthe impacts of the dynamic environment on operational positioninginformation. This will improve the student’s appreciation of measure-ment techniques, statistical analysis, and proper scientific practices.Understanding the impacts of the environment on position infor-mation is relevant to their future work in navigation, targeting, andresource management.

National Ice Center (NIC)

The Naval Ice Center (NAVICECEN),NOAA, and the Coast Guard worktogether to operate the National IceCenter and accomplish the nationalmission of providing global ice analysesand forecasts.

Midshipmen will work with the National Ice Center personnel toassist in creating relevant snow and ice products / services to meetthe strategic, operations, and tactical requirements of the UnitedStates.

Navy Marine Mammal Training at SPAWAR

Mammal Program (NMMP) beganin 1959 with a single Navy scientistand one dolphin. Since that time,the program has expanded its studywith the development of the FleetMarine Mammal Systems utilizingdolphins, beluga whales, and sea lions.In addition, the NMMP is doing avariety of research projects investigatingthe hearing abilities in a number ofspecies of marine mammals.

Scientific research conducted to support the developmentof systems and technology and to gain a better understanding of theanimals. This research, conducted by both staff and visiting scientists,has covered a broad spectrum of topics including hydrodynamics,sensory systems, anatomy and physiology, health care, behavior,reproduction, telemetry, open sea operations, and environmentalecology. This work is facilitated by well-trained animals that can par-ticipate in research in ocean pens, pools, or open water. Midshipmenwork hands on with the Program’s Internship Coordinator to includetraining of the various marine mammal Fleet systems. Midshipmenare integrated in the training watch bill and participate in multipleaspects of the system.

Midshipmen will assist NOAA personnel with research cruises The Office of National Marine Sanctuar-ies serves as the trustee for a network of14 marine protected areas encompass-ing more than 170,000 square miles ofmarine and Great Lakes waters fromWashington state to the Florida Keys,and from Lake Huron to AmericanSamoa. The network includes a systemof 13 national marine sanctuaries.

and other field work, which may include remotely operated vehiclework, dive monitoring, and habitat mapping involved in the Office’smission to monitor ecosystem health and promote responsible, sus-tainable ocean uses that ensure the health of the nation’s most valuedocean places. Internships may be available at the NOAA offices atAnnapolis, the Florida Keys, Savannah Georgia and Galveston, Texas.

Operational Oceanographic Products -National Ocean Service/CO-OPSUSNA POC: CDR William Swick;Phone: 3-6564; [email protected]

The Center for Operational Oceano-graphic Products and Services (CO-OPS) and its predecessors have gath-ered oceanographic data along ournation’s coasts for over 200 years toprotect life, property, and the envi-ronment. Serving both the public andother government agencies, CO-OPS isthe authoritative source for accurate,reliable, and timely water-level andcurrent measurements that support safeand efficient maritime commerce, soundcoastal management, and recreation.

Midshipmen will participate in analyzing collected tide sta-tion data, assimilating the data into an operational tidal model, andrunning the model in various operational scenarios to develop tidalpredictions in complex areas. It is envisioned that the USNA studentIntern would be incorporated into the modeling team operationalprotocols to learn all aspects of operational oceanography withinthe National Ocean Service. If they occur, the student volunteerwould assist in investigating and diagnosing any model failures.They would assist in the development of numerical model skill as-sessment system for the operational models and the development ofa user product to would provide users with an understandable modelskill. The intern could also conduct in-depth analysis of the numer-ical skill output to help address where improvements in the models

would be most effective. The intern may also investigate what exist-ing observational data is available that would aid the model producteither through better skill assessment, numerical assimilation, or asinput for running the models.

Research Vessel Bay Hydro II, NOAA, Office of Coast Survey

President Thomas Jefferson createdthe U.S. Coast Survey in 1807 to pro-vide nautical charts that would helpthe young nation with safe shipping,national defense, and maritime bound-aries. Two centuries later, Coast Survey,now an office within NOAA, continuesto provide navigation products andservices that ensure safe and efficientmaritime commerce on America’soceans and coastal waters, and in theGreat Lakes.

Midshipmen will accompany NOAA coastal survey teams

onboard the Bay Hydro II, a 57 foot survey catamaran. The Bay Hy-dro II is Coast Survey research vessel engaged in on-the-water hydro-graphic surveying including testing of hydro-graphic systems and theacquisition of sounding data. The midshipman would participate inall aspects of the mission from preparation to acquisition to process-ing. Additionally, the midshipman will be presented opportunitiesfor small boat handling by operating a 57 foot survey catamaran. Theboat is berthed about 1 1/2 hours south of USNA at Solomons Is-land, MD. Midshipmen might be able to stay at Naval Air Station PaxRiver which is about 30 minutes away.

Severe Weather In-Field Training (SWIFT)

This is the 6th iteration of SWIFT atUSNA

Midshipmen will travel to the Norman, OK and Fort Campbell,KY areas by duty van to engage in daily, real-time exercises to fore-cast and observe severe convective storms, guided by Dr. Barrettand CDR Cooper. On the days when severe convective activity isnot forecast, midshipmen will visit the operational and research fa-cilities of NOAA and AFWA for tours and discussion of the role ofeach agency by forecasters and leading scientists. Meetings withoperational Air Force, Army, and NOAA meteorologists will givemidshipmen exposure to the forecast challenges presented by se-vere convective storms including effects on the environment and theeconomy, danger to civilians and impact on military operations. Thisexperience will be invaluable to all Midshipmen involved, regardlessof their choice of warfare specialty, but especially to those who areconsidering careers as Navy METOC officers.

Tropical Cyclones (TROPIC), Research on Oceanographic Processes

idshipmen involved in TROPIC willcollect oceanographic and meteorolog-ical data during their flights with the53rd WRS during the summer trainingportion of the program, and will thenutilize that data for a research projectduring the following academic year(either Honors or Capstone research)

Midshipmen will launch AXBTs from USAF 53rd WRS WC-130Jsin tropical cyclones over the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, andeastern Pacific Ocean in support of a forecast demonstration projectin conjunction with the Naval Research Laboratory, Monterey andthe USAF 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron (USAF HurricaneHunters). CDR Sanabia will coordinate and oversee pre-flight and in-flight training for the midshipmen on the AXBT system and launchprocedures with subject matter experts at the start of the TROPICtraining block, and prior to launching AXBTs. Forward deploymentof the WC-130J and USAF crew to St. Croix is standard operatingprocedure during high-tempo flight periods, and is expected duringthe training block. On days when there are no flights, midshipmenwill process the data collected from previous flights and stage gearfor upcoming flights. Once flight preparations are complete, mid-shipmen will visit the numerous USAF and USN operational andresearch facilities in the Keesler, Gulfport, Stennis area to includethe 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron; Naval OceanographicOffice (NAVO); Commander, Naval Meteorology and OceanographyCommand; Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit, andMETOC Professional Development Center.

U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL),Marine Geosciences Division, Wash-ington DC

The Division conducts a broadly-based,multidisciplinary program of scientificresearch and advanced technologydevelopment directed towards maritimeand other national applications ofgeosciences, geospatial information andrelated technologies.

This internship will involve conducting unclassified researchin support of the NRL Determining the Impact of Sea Ice Thick-ness on the Arctic’s Naturally Changing Environment (DISTANCE)project. The objective of the NRL DISTANCE project is to under-stand the changing Arctic environment, characterized by reducedice volume, using new techniques for deriving accurate multisensorsnow and ice thickness information and coupled ice ocean models toexplore the new Arctic dynamics.

Midshipmen will conduct limited, independent research projectsin the field and laboratory and participate in ongoing collaborative,interdisciplinary research related to the three topics above. This in-ternship as currently planned will involve a 7-10 day field researchexpedition on the R/V Sharp on the continental shelf of the North-eastern U.S. as part of an Office of Naval Research (ONR)-sponsoredresearch project.

Midshipmen will conduct independent research projects in thefield and numerical laboratory. In this particular internship you willapply your education to cutting edge numerical research and de-velopment of software tools for modeling sediment mobility. Youwill develop, test and evaluate fast and efficient models to improvecurrent U.S Navy fine scale prediction. You will work in an intellec-tual and supportive environment and will be using our world-classlaboratories.

Internship Application Procedure

All applicants must fill out and submit the SOC Internship ap-plication. The application form will be open for entries as soon as 05

January. The application deadline is 18 January, 2015.

Internship selections will be made based on the Midshipman’soverall performance, the context of that performance, and the princi-pal investigators assessment of the Midshipman’s ability to performin the internship. Should further information be required, the princi-pal investigators will contact Midshipmen directly.

Internship and Travel Approvals

Internships travel authorization is a two step process.

1. Travel Authorization Form must be filled it out no later than Mon-day, 09 February 14. Once the form is filled out you will be con-tacted via email by your principal investigator to sign and date.The authorization form will be open for entries as soon internshipselections are finalized o/a 23 January, 2015.

2. You and your respective principal investigator will enter yourorders in DTS (Defense Travel System 1). 1 If this is your first time traveling on

Military Orders you will need to SelfRegister for a DTS account.3. All travel orders, regardless of block for the internship, must be

entered into DTS and ready for approval no later than 15 April 15

All funded internship travel must startand end at USNA. Midshipmen onunfunded permissive travel ordersmust start their travel from USNA, butmay depart the internship and proceedon leave without returning to USNAsince there is no voucher requirement.Leave should NOT be included in anyinternship travel order - before, during,or after the internship.

Funding

If an internship is funded, fully or partially, the Departmentprincipal investigator for the account must sign and date the Intern-ship Travel Request form.

All vouchers will be filed immediately after the end of the intern-ships, prior to the midshipman being approved to proceed on leaveor to the next summer activity. Unfunded Internships do not requirea voucher. Submitting a voucher by following the following guid-ance will ensure the voucher is processed correctly and efficiently.Incorrect or missing documentation can will slow the process down.

Required Voucher Receipts

Lodging receipts A single traveler’s name MUST appear on the lodg-ing receipt to get reimbursement. If multiple traveler names appearit should be clear and easily identified as to who paid what portion.The bill should have a zero paid balance.

Eticket PDF copy from Virtually There

Any other receipts for expenses that were authorized on the travel or-ders prior to departure. (Ex. Super Shuttle, Taxi, Rental Cars, RentalCar-gasoline, etc)

Completed Mileage log if Midshipmen drove to and from internshipand in and around mileage. Mileage logs should be legible and totalsfor official business tallied. POV gasoline will not be reimbursed.
