Social Media Applications Our Children Use:
● Facebook● Instagram● Twitter● Tinder● Snapchat
● 2 billions daily users● Used for posting statuses and pictures● Lost some luster among the youth● Seperate application for private messaging ● Several high level incidents of past posts coming back to
create issues for people who are in the public eye, ie athletes, politicians, police officers
● Has been cooperative with Law Enforcement
● Used on phones for photo and video sharing● Users have the ability to post “Live” in real time● Users have the option of posting to their instagram page
or submitting photos or videos in their stories● Instagram also has a direct message inbox in which
messages can be received from friends or others depending on your security settings
● One of the most used amongst the kids● Cooperative with Law Enforcement
Does your child have a “Finsta”
The "finsta" is a second Instagram account many users will maintain, and its content is quite different from their real ("rinsta") account. Think of the "rinsta" as a public persona, where users will share curated images, whereas a "finsta" is a more unfiltered experience.
Kids usually only have close friends on Finsta. No parents or adults.
Sometimes contains raunchy posts, drug or alcohol use

match with them or pass on them● If you match with someone it puts you in a private chat

Snapchat
● Snapchat users “Snap” a photo or video with their phone’s camera, and can add a text message or filter.
● Senders choose how long the message will appear, and who they will send the message to.
● The message is then sent to their friend(s) through Snapchat.
● Once the message is viewed, it is deleted.*
Why parents should be concerned with their childrens’ use of the snapchat app
● Once a snap is viewed it is deleted and cannot be recovered
● Cyber Bullying● Sexting● Snapchat is not Law Enforcement friendly and
representatives are only available by email which sometimes go unanswered
● Your kids are posting their snapchat ID’s on their other social media platforms. Who is following them?

Child Pornography CGS 53a-193(13)
By law, “child pornography” means any visual depiction, including any photograph, film, videotape, picture, or computer-generated image or picture, produced by electronic, digital, mechanical, or other means, of sexually explicit conduct, where the production involves the use of a person under age 16 engaging in sexually explicit conduct. Whether the subject of the depiction was under age 16 at the time it was created is a question to be decided by the trier of fact.
Possessing or Transmitting Child Pornography by a Minor
Class A misdemeanor. (a)(1) No person who is thirteen years of age or older but under eighteen years of age may knowingly possess any visual depiction of child pornography that the subject of such visual depiction knowingly and voluntarily transmitted by means of an electronic communication device to such person and in which the subject of such visual depiction is a person thirteen years of age or older but under sixteen years of age.
(2) No person who is thirteen years of age or older but under sixteen years of age may knowingly and voluntarily transmit by means of an electronic communication device a visual depiction of child pornography in which such person is the subject of such visual depiction to another person who is thirteen years of age or older but under eighteen years of age.
(b) As used in this section, “child pornography” and “visual depiction” have the same meanings as provided in section 53a-193, and “electronic communication device” means any electronic device that is capable of transmitting a visual depiction, including a computer, computer network and computer system, as those terms are defined in section 53a-250, and a cellular or wireless telephone.
(c) Any person who violates the provisions of this section shall be guilty of a class A misdemeanor.
Sexting Connecticut law punishes both the teenage sender of a "sext" for electronically transmitting child pornography and the receiver for possessing it.
A teenager breaks this law if he or she is (1) age 13 to 15 and knowingly and voluntarily sends an image of him or herself that is considered child pornography using an electronic communication device or (2) age 13 to 17 and knowingly possesses this image.
Statistics don’t lie……………………….
ONE in SEVEN teens report that they are sending sexts, and ONE in FOUR are receiving sexts, according to our study of over 110,000 teens from around the world published, Monday Feb. 26 2018, in JAMA Pediatrics.
How we investigate
1. Ask for consent to search phone with parents permission
2. A lot of the time the school investigates and relays information to us since they are able to search without a warrant/consent

1. For instances when the sender of lude material / harassing behavior is not known
2. Initial warrant is for obtaining an “IP” address which is a number associated with a specific network location
3. After first warrant comes back with “IP” address for example an IP Address of 216.3.128.12 you now have to submit a warrant to see who is the owner of said address.
4. If it is a home network you will be able to find out, but if it is a public wifi, ex.Starbucks you will be unable to
What we can do as parents…..Not give our children phones until they we are 110% confident in their maturity level - I am a firm believer in no phones equates to keeping them young/innocent
1. Police related incidents regarding phones/social media at the elementary and middle school level on the rise
2. In High school level police related incidents, phones/social media play a part in 90% of them
3. Sexting has already hit the middle schools at an alarming rate
Limit or Restrict Their Screen Time
There are some great programs to filter in home content and screen usage - Circle and Qustodio
- turn wifi on and off on specific devices
- set wake up and bed time for wifi
- content restriction / app blocks, snapchat etc
- history log, see what sites and apps were visited
Talk to your kids………………………….
Communication solves a lot of the problems and you can gauge where your children are mentally / socially
Show them you have an interest in what they are doing on their phones, for example the current trends, games, or social media applications
Sign up for the same social media applications they have and ask them for help on setting them up
