The chief characteristic of the present Work is the fiihiess and

completeness of the illustration which it furnishes of the various

localities of the Sacred Narrative. It consists of a Series of Maps

and Plans which embrace the entire extent of the regions referred

to in the Bible, from the Holy Land to the farthest confines of

" the East" on the one hand, and to the shores of that ocean which

marked the ancient limits of Western discovery on the other.

Thus, not only have Canaan and Eg}^t, Mesopotamia and Chaldea,

Amienia and Assyria,—^the scenes of the principal events of Sacred

history,—their correspondent delineations in these pages, but those

more distant and less known regions (which though only of in-

cidental mention, are yet full of the deepest interest to the reader

of the Bible,) as Ethiopia and Arabia, Sheba and Tarshish, have

each such geographical illustration as the most erudite and laborious

researches have been capable of giving. In like manner, the period

of time to which the Maps refer is coincident with the entire extent

of history, embraced both in the Old and New Testaments, com-

mencing with the supposed site of the Garden of Eden, and the

first dispersion of the families of mankind after the deluge, and

terminating with the preaching of the Gospel by the Apostles

among the nations of Asia Minor, and the countries of southern

Europe.

Palestine itself, the scene of so many wonderful and Sacred

events, claims naturally the largest share of illustration, and hence

the student is herein supplied, not only with Maps which exhibit

successively its condition at different epochs, but also mth a separate

Map of the territories possessed by each Tribe, on a scale so greatly

enlarged as to admit of a minute delineation of the numerous in-

teresting localities of Jewish history. The Reader of the Bible may

here trace the wanderings of the early patriarchs of the Hebrew

race, mark the traditional sites of their encampments and dwelHng-

places, or the hallowed spots in which their remains reposed in death,

and note the reputed scenes of the numerous battles and other thrill-

ing events which impart so much of human interest to the inspired

records. It is believed that even in the present age of critical (and

often of sceptical) inquiry, these qualities will be found to possess

sufficient attraction for the simply devotional readers of the Bible,

to justify the Publishers in the reissue of a work which thus identifies

locally every place mentioned in the Sacred Narrative, and exhibits

with topographical precision at least the supposed scenes of the most

deeply-impressive events in the history of mankind. In its copious-

ness of illustration in these regards, the present volume may indeed

justly claim to be, not so much an Atlas of Sacred Geography, in

the strict sense of the expression, as a Geographical and Topographical

Commentary upon the entire Scriptures.

The Publishers feel pleasm'e in drawing attention to the copious

Index of words attached to the Work, in which every place men-

tioned in the Bible is identified by Latitude and Longitude, and

referred to the Map in which it will be found. The Classical and

Modern Names, where known, are also added, and distinguished by

different characters of type, and a reference is given in every in-

stance to one of the texts of Scripture in which the place is men-

tioned. The care which has been bestowed upon its compikition

constitutes this a valuable Appendix to the volume, and will, it is

confidently expected, assist in rendering the present Atlas a per-

manently useful as well as attractive companion to the Biblical

student.
