Guide. Making the decision to study overseas, and

choosing the right university, is a big decision.

Since its beginnings in the 1970s, Griffith has

had a strong focus on internationalisation and

is privileged to host students from over 130

different countries. Both Brisbane and the Gold

Coast, home to five diverse Griffith University

campuses, offer students a great introduction to

the renowned Australian lifestyle. It is an exciting

time to join us at Griffith, with a new academic

calendar and revised programs being launched

in 2017. In addition, there is a renewed focus on

graduate employability, and a range of initiatives

have been developed to ensure you have the

support you need to achieve your goals.

Leadership programsIf you are a motivated student, you may be able to join one of our leadership programs, including the Griffith Business School Student Leadership Program, Griffith Mates and Griffith Honours College. Leadership programs will give you the opportunity to participate in a range of development and mentoring activities and contribute to University events. You will receive formal recognition for participating in the program.

Careers and employment ServiceThe Careers and Employment Service can help you find a part-time job while you’re studying and provide you with tips for how to get your first graduate job. You will learn about the importance of professional networking and using social media in your job search, and you will get the latest information on job vacancies, recruitment trends, employers and career options with your degree through our online resources. Life in Queensland

With world heritage-listed tropical rainforest in the north, huge cattle farms in the west, and the largest coral reef on the planet – The Great Barrier Reef – in the north east, Queensland is one of Australia’s most diverse states. Griffith’s five university campuses are located in Queensland’s capital city, Brisbane, second largest city, the Gold Coast, and the vibrant multicultural city of Logan.

N nathan Nestled in pristine bushland, a short drive from Brisbane’s city centre, our first campus’s modern grounds are shared with koalas, echidnas, possums, sugar gliders and 240 different types of native flora. Nathan’s newest building–The Sir Samuel Griffith Centre–exemplifies our focus on sustainability. The first teaching and research facility of its kind in Australia, it has a six green star rating from the Green Building Council of Australia.

a Brisbane Weekend

a gold Coast Weekend


7.00 am: Beat the crowds and get along to one of the many outdoor markets that happen every weekend around Brisbane. Buy fresh organic food from local farmers and grocers, grab a coffee, sample some of the many cuisines on offer, and listen to live music.

10.00 am: Take a bus, ferry, train or city cycle to South Bank - Brisbane’s cultural precinct, and home of Griffith’s Queensland College of Art and Queensland Conservatorium of Music. Wander along the river front, swim at the man-made beach, visit the art galleries, ride the Wheel of Brisbane and pick some herbs from ‘Epicurious’, a public vegetable and herb garden.

12.00 midday: From South Bank (pictured), catch the City Hopper, the free inner city ferry, into Brisbane City and grab some lunch at Dockside, one of Brisbane’s premier dining areas. After lunch, stroll down the Queen Street Mall – Brisbane’s central business and shopping district.

3.00 pm: If you like the outdoors, head to Kangaroo Point where you can cycle, rock climb, or kayak on the Brisbane River. Or, if your feet are sore, rest on a park bench under one of the iconic Moreton Bay figtrees in the Brisbane Botanical Gardens.

7.00 pm: There are so many things to do in Brisbane in the evening - watch a live show at the New Farm Powerhouse, sample food from all over the world at the Eat Street Markets or investigate Brisbane’s thriving bar and live music scene in Fortitude Valley or West End.

7.00 am: Rise with the sun for a yoga session, surfing lesson, refreshing ocean swim or a visit to one of the many farmers’ markets.

10:00 am: Be there right when the gate opens to one of the Gold Coast’s world-famous theme parks: Dreamworld, Movie World, Wet’n’Wild or Sea World. If you prefer animals to rollercoasters, visit the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and meet some of Australia’s weird and wonderful native animals, some of which – like koalas – also live wild in the forest around Griffith’s Nathan and Mt Gravatt campuses.

10.30 am: Check out The Village Markets in Burleigh Heads or Paradise Point. Held three times a month, this is the Gold Coast’s biggest Fashion Market. Featuring vintage clothing and emerging designer stalls, it is the brainchild of two Griffith marketing graduates. You can find out more about it here: thevillagemarketsgc.com.au

12:00 midday: Travel into the Gold Coast hinterland to walk through a magificent subtropical rainforest, refresh under a waterfall or in a fresh water rock pool, and enjoy a late picnic lunch.

7.00 pm: Eat fish and chips on the beach, or dine in style at one of the Gold Coast’s many popular restaurants. Afterwards, take in the nightlife at Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise.

Orientation During Orientation Week you get to know Griffith before you start classes. Find out about studying and living in Australia at the compulsory Getting Started Session; get sand between your toes playing beach volleyball; wander Brisbane at dusk on the Griffith Mates’ Twilight City Walking Tour; partake in the quintessentially Australian pastime of barefoot bowls; and if you are brave enough, sample our national spread - vegemite - at the Griffith Mates stand.

griffith MatesGriffith Mates are a diverse group of students who speak around thirty different languages and come from all over the world. They help you practise your English, make friends, find your way around campus and become acquainted with the Australian environment. They also run weekend trips to stunning regional locations. Look out for their red shirts at the airport at the beginning of each trimester.

Sport and fitnessJoin Griffith Sport to burn off study stress, keep fit and meet people. Discounted student memberships can be used at each campus’s facilities including the Tennis and Aquatic Centres at Mt Gravatt, and the Fitness Centres at Gold Coast and Nathan. Nathan and Gold Coast also have social sport competitions throughout the year. An Aquatic Centre will open on our Gold Coast campus in 2017.

There is so much more to university life than lecture theatres and libraries. We have groups, facilities and events that will help you to meet people, pursue your interests, play sport, and practise your religion.

Food and retail We have a number of retail stores on campus for your convenience. On the Gold Coast and Nathan campuses there is a post office, bank, travel agency, hairdresser, beauty salon, general store, bookshop, computer store, and pharmacy. At the Logan campus there is a bookshop and hairdresser. At the Mt Gravatt campus there is a bookshop. The South Bank campus is located in the middle of one of Brisbane’s premier retail and dining areas. Our campus cafes serve delicious food at student prices, including Halal options at the Nathan, Mt Gravatt, Gold Coast and South Bank campuses.

TrimestersFrom 2017, we’ll be teaching across three trimesters, rather than two semesters, which gives you the flexibility to pace your study to suit your needs. You will have more opportunities throughout the year to start study–for example, you can start our business, commerce, science, IT, psychological science and counselling degrees in February, July, or October–so if you want to take a break from study after school, you can still start university in 2017. From 2017, Griffith University degrees will be delivered over three twelve-week teaching periods per year.

Trimesters one and two are compulsory, so if you begin your degree in trimester three, you must complete trimesters one and two in the following year; however, if you begin in trimester one or two, it is not compulsory to enrol in trimester three.

Your first year of study is a foundation year. Explore the core skills and concepts relating to your chosen study area so you can try different courses before you choose the study area that interests you.

Major: A major is a sequence of at least 60 credit points (normally six courses) allowing you to specialise in a particular area of interest. You begin your major in second year.

Award major: An award major is a major printed on your testamur upon graduation and requires 80 credit points (eight courses).

Minor: A minor is a sequence of at least 30 credit points (three courses), which allows you to specialise in a particular area of interest.

What if I don’t meet the entry requirements?

You can upgrade your academic or English language qualifications through one of our pathway programs (see pages 26 to 31).

How do I apply?

Choose the program you want to study

1 Check if you are eligible for credit

2 Prepare supporting documentation

3If you have existing formal qualifications, you may be eligible to receive credit for previous studies. Follow the instructions at griffith.edu.au/credit to find out how to apply.

� a certified copy of your academic results (translated into English if applicable)

� a certified copy of your English test results (if available) AND

� if you are applying for a music or visual arts degree you may need to submit a portfolio of work, or audition (see individual program for details).

Sponsored students must also supply documents confirming:

� sponsor

� program(s) being supported

� duration of support

� inclusions such as tuition fees and Overseas Student Health Cover

How do I get my results certified?

A Justice of the Peace (JP) or other public notary – lawyer, policeman, solicitor, embassy official – must see your original documents, and sign and stamp the copies for you.

Credit pointsCredit Point refers to the value of a course. As a guide, one course is worth 10 credit points, however this may differ depending on the area of study. The program guide contains the total number of credit points each program is worth.

duration (Years)Unless stated otherwise, all program durations (years) are for full time study. You must study full-time on campus to be eligible for a student visa. For most programs a full-time study load is 80 credit points per year (or 40 credit points per trimester).

english language entry requirementsEach Griffith degree has English language entry requirements. You can check the minimum overall International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score for your degree in the program pages of the guide. Below is a list of other tests we accept, and the corresponding results, based on our most common IELTS score:

• A minimum overall band score of 6.5 on IELTS (Academic) (no sub-score less than 6.0) OR

• a minimum score of 575 on TOEFL OR• an internet-based (iBT) TOEFL score of 79

(no sub-score less than 19) OR• no score less than 3+ in each skill of the ISLPR

(conducted by ISLPR Language Services only) OR• a minimum grade of C on the Cambridge Certificate

in Advanced English (CAE) OR• a minimum grade of C on the Cambridge Certificate

of Proficiency in English (CPE) OR• an overall score of 61 in the Pearson Test of English (Academic)

with a minimum of 54 in all Communicative Skills.If your program requires a higher IELTS score, check degrees.griffith.edu.au for more information. Griffith does not accept test results more than two years old.

Undergraduate academic entry requirementsEntry to a Griffith undergraduate degree usually requires successful completion of a secondary school qualification equivalent to Australian year 12. Griffith has the following undergraduate entry requirements:
