WellPro 2011 International Study Module

This international study module will be implemented at Savonia University of Applied Sciences in Kuopio from week 3 to week 15 in 2011. The theoretical sub-modules are organised from January 18 to April 16, 2011. Placements are organised after the orientation part of the module beginning from the week 4.

Students can combine theoretical studies with the placement. The number of credits per each placement varies according to the personal learning agreement between the student and the sending and the receiving institution.

Cultural Orientation for Exchange Students (instalment) 1.5 ECTS

Learning Objectives:

• Students are familiar with some facts about Finland, their temporary home town Kuopio and facilities of Student House.

• Students are familiar with the hosting institution, the facilities for students and all services concerning their safety.

• Students know and understand their rights and duties as registered students of Savonia UAS School of Health Care.

• Students learn to know and understand the Finnish health care system and patients’ rights in Finland.

• Students get familiar with the organisation and buildings in their practice placements and the rights and duties of students during the practice.

Core Content: Students understand what are the main issues to adjust to a new country, culture and environment in order to make their studies as effectively as possible.

Learning Objectives: To learn the basics of Finnish to survive in simple everyday situations.

Computing Information Utilization Skills

Learning Objectives: Students will learn how to use Savonia’s information systems such as email and eLearning platform Moodle. Students will get familiar with common social media tools and how to use them in learning. Students will learn to use the library and its resources, and find an article/articles for their course assignment.

Core Content: Savonia’s information systems (username and password, email, Moodle) and social media tools Connect Pro, Wikispace, Blogs, Facebook etc. The library tutorials will focus on how to use the library services, the library online catalogue, and subject specific databases.

Assessment: Participation.

Learning and Teaching Methods: Group work, exercises and independent study using online databases, seeking information.

Learning Objectives: Students learn about oral communication and writing in a multicultural environment. Students learn how to give presentations, express opinions and write public documents in English.

Core Content: Cross-cultural communication, a variety of documents and articles, planning and giving presentations in a final seminar, putting together a portfolio.

Assessment: Active participation and successful completion of the assignments.

Infection Control I

Infection Control 1 is a part of 11 credit Nursing Basics course.

Learning Objectives: To understand how infection control is a basic and an important part of safe health care both in single patient and whole hospital level. Additionally the aim of this course is to help a student to form a complete understanding of infection prevention issues and embrace the fight against hospital infections and aseptic techniques of management operating practices.

Core Content:

• The most common contagious and infectious agents. • Environment, community and the individual's role in infection prevention. • Treatment-related infections and hospital infections. • Cleaning, disinfection and sterilization methods. • Personal hygiene, hand hygiene, protective clothing and protective equipment.

Food Hygiene criteria of food distribution and patient work. • Textiles cleaning and waste treatment in hospital setting. • Isolation precautions. • Hospital Infections disease law and regulations.

Learning Objectives:

Core Contents: The student will learn to find information, to reflect and evaluate his/ her own skills, before and after the course in all learning objectives.

Gerontology

Gerontology study module is part of the medical studies.

Learning Objectives: To acquaint the student with the basics of gerontology as a discipline, the connections between health and functional capacity, and the background of biological changes.

• Student can define gerontology as a discipline and know the differences between the gerontology and geriatric.

• Student understands ageing of the population and social and economical consequences of that. • Student knew the connections between physical activity, functional ability and ageing. • Student can promote of successful ageing in her or his future occupation. • Students start to think about her or his attitude relate to the older people.

Core Content: Gerontology as a discipline, ageing of the population and social and economical consequences of that, physical activity, functional ability and ageing and promote of successful ageing.

Assessment: Final written examination which includes short interview and lecture material.

Pain Assessment and Management

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

• Distinguish between different types of pain in terms of the similarities and differences in approach to assessment and management.

• Engage in pain assessment and care planning that takes account of all aspects of the pain experience.

• Identify barriers to effective pain control. • Recognize those individuals at risk for inadequate pain assessment and management. • Select and use valid and reliable pain assessment tools that are appropriate to the needs of the

patient and the demands of the care situation. • Describe the differences between physical dependence, (addiction), tolerance, and pseudoaddiction. • Identify basic physical and psychological comfort measures. • Demonstrate effective collaboration as a nurse(student)-member of the interdisciplinary team. • Ensure accurate record-keeping and communication. • Practice in accordance with an ethical code. • Reflect critically on effective ways of working with and improving care for people who have pain. • Regularly update personal knowledge that relates to all aspects of pain.

Learning Objectives: To understand the importance of infection control costs of the individual and for society level. Moreover, the aim is to update the knowledge of isolation and infection control precautions and to know legislation and government directives which control safety of patient care.
