Musikk på grensen, Litteraturhuset, April 16 at 19.00Ferhat Tunç is one of the most prominent Kurdish musicians of his generation. He has paid a high price for the right to sing in his own language, and has been subject to censorship, interrogations and imprisonment. In 1979, he was forced into exile, where he stayed for a decade. After returning to Turkey, his circumstances have been marked by a lack of safety. Many of the lyrics on his previous album deal with the 1938 Kurdish genocide. His new album, on which Mari Boine and Knut Reiersrud are among the Norwegian contributors, bears the title Kobani, for the city that has been in the line of fire in the Syrian Kurds’ resistance fight against ISIS.Click here for more information and here for tickets.Address: Wergelandsveien 29How to get there: Trams 17/18 to Frydenlund

DANCEOlivier Dubois: Tragédie, Dansens Hus, April 16 – 17 at 19.00With the body as its focus, Tragédie is an exploration of the human conditions and relationships through nine female and nine male dancers, who, both in a literally and metaphorical sense, are undressed on stage. Through their naked vulnerability, the dancers’ different repetitive and precise phrases of movement build up to a hypnotic choir, where body and soul meet. Through an archaic pattern of motion, the performance is slowly but surely developed into a mighty and large crescendo.Olivier Dubois is an award-winning choreographer who has figured at the forefront of development in French contemporary dance since 1999. LECTURES/DEBATES
Badass Kurdish Women, Litteraturhuset, April 14 at 20.00Kurdish women have a long and proud tradition as soldiers, and they have fought fiercely against Iran, Turkey and Saddam Hussein previously, and in later years against IS in Syria. Female representation and participation in the political movement is also strong. But what is the status of gender equality and women’s rights in Kurdish families, societies and in the diaspora? How are women affected by a traditionally strict code of honour? Don’t miss an interesting talk with activist and Cambridge graduate Dilar Dirik, Swedish author Mustafa Can and Hannah Helseth, author and PhD candidate at the Centre for Gender Studies, University of Oslo. This event is free of charge.
