International Life Sciences Institute
Global Partnerships for a Healthier World
ILSI is a global network of scientists
who work together to provide science
that improves public health and well-
being and safeguards the environment.
TM
• Founded in 1978 in USA with original focus on
ingredient safety (caffeine)
• Now covers range of environmental, nutrition,
and food science issues
• From inception its vision has been global
– Science and health are borderless concepts
– Science can be applied in national and regional
context no matter where it is generated

Our Approach
Tripartite Collaboration Scientific processes and
scientific outcomes are
better when experts from
multiple sectors work
together to anticipate,
identify and resolve complex
science and health issues of
common concern Industry Scientists
Academic Scientists
Government Scientists
TM
Our Approach
• Prominent researchers work together to:
– Identify emerging health challenges
– Deliver science to improve health/safety
– Deliver science to help harmonize policies
and procedures
– Encourage scientific dialogue among experts
from all sectors of society
TM
Our Approach
• Transparency
– Peer-review publication of science
– Public disclosure of all funding sources
– Strong declaration-of-interest policies
• Advocacy for Use of Science
– ILSI does not try to influence legislative or
regulatory outcomes – does not lobby govt

ILSI Focus Re-formulated 2013
Four Thematic Areas
Thematic areas serve as organizing
principles to improve cross-boundary
coordination and collaboration
Food and Water Safety Chemical and microbial
Toxicology and Risk Science Basic research and risk assessment, management
and communication
Nutrition, Health and Wellness Disease prevention and health optimization
Ag Sustainability & Nutrition Security Simultaneous challenges of climate change and
increasing food demand
TM
“One ILSI” Approach (2013)
• Global network of public and private
sector scientists collaborate to resolve
important issues
• Collectively entities have greater impact
on health and safety than one alone does
Science and health issues are borderless
TM
“One ILSI” Approach (2013)
• Branches and the Research Foundation
work together to achieve common
objectives
– Issue identification
– Program development and implementation
– Dissemination of outputs, outcomes, and
results
TM
“One ILSI” Puts Added Value on
Cross-Geography Collaboration
• Builds on ILSI’s existing ability to mobilize human and financial resources globally
• Encourages additional effort on coordination, cooperation & collaboration
