Plans to set up joint bank to finance projects in hydrocarbons and find ways to use theirrespective currencies in bilateral trade
Russia helped iran broker a deal with turkey However it supported US in levying sanctions on iran. This sends contradictory signals
from Russia
US sees russias policies as schizophrenic Iran is an important partner for Russia in security isuees in Afghanistan and central asia Last 15yrs, Russia has been supplying aircraft, helicopters, tanks and air defence systems They teo countries hold 20% of global oil reserves and 42% of global natural gas Two years ago they helped form 11 memebr Gas exporting countries forumGas OPEC Russias vote for sanctions was an act of balancing its improved relations with US against
its close ties with iran
Russia is willing to help finance ian gas pipeline Russias ties with Iran gives a lever of influence on iran and provides a backchannel for
communication with Tehran. Hence it is beneficial for US2. India China in Myanmar
Early 1990s India supported democratic forces After 1990 keeping in view the increasing presence of chine in Myanmar, changed tack
and started engaging with the miltairy junta
Since then Naypaydaw (Myanmars capital) has been playing Beijing off against India For china it is an important trade route in North south direction from sittwe to yunnan
province
A natural gas pipeline from kuming to Myanmar is on the cards The Myanmar premiers visit to India has raised eyebrows around the world The proud democratic nation is playing host to dictator But this is the only way to leverage influence and keep china at bay This is a very wrong notion China and india need to discuss and come clear on how to go ahead with Myanmar For delhi its an important connectivity link in east-west direction If world diplomacy wasnt able to create a dent on ideas of Myanmar, india and china
through their relationship should ensure democracy is established
Keeping in view south east asias interest in order, a guided democracy would be anideal way to start. It would provide political space for opponents to operate
India China are fighting it out for energy resources in Myanmar. In 2006 india lost out asit couldnt broker a deal with Bangladesh with regards to transit.
Myanmar has immense potential in natural and hydroelectric power which has kept OVLand NHPC interested
However it isnt a zero sum game as there are many more resources down south inThailand
