Summer School

I am glad that we have been able to hold the MIS’ 3rd Jessup
Summer School this year despite all the impediments due to the
current situation of the world. We are living an era in which,
almost every event that takes place in a large scale or affect the
world in a way, reminds us of the importance of international
law, role of international relations, solidarity and necessity of the
collective actions. All the states in today’s world are interrelated,
and we, as the international community, share the same goals
and interests. This pandemic has clearly shown the importance of
international collaboration, and the significance of strong inter-
national entities, it has highlighted the necessity of global gover-
nance and despite some countries wrongful use of the current sit-
uation moving back to unilateralism, it is evident that we cannot
pursue such approach towards international relations in this time
and age. One great lesson that we have learnt during this time of
pandemic, is the importance of technology. We have learnt that
we cannot eliminate our social interactions, and the technology
has bestowed us with the gift of online communication facilities.
It is important to understand that with this pandemic, our life-
style may change for a long period of time, if not fundamentally
altered, therefore, it is essential for every company and institu-
tion in the world to benefit from the gift of technology and keep
on with their activities. With the importance of international law
mentioned, here, at MIS, we believe that nothing shall hinder
educating students on this very crucial field of law and we see the
Jessup competition as one of the solid ways to encourage talented
and hardworking students to further their studies in internation-
al law. Therefore, adhering to the necessity and limitations of the
world’s current situation, and recalling the importance of mai
taining academic and educational activities,
we decided to hold this year’s summer school online. We are op-
timistic that this can broaden the number of students who can
benefit from our courses, as now student from remote areas of
our country can participate in the Jessup summer school. Efforts
to globalize rights are one of the ideals of the international com-
munity, but now, given the state of the disease in the world, al-
though this situation has created very difficult problems for soci-
ety, but because it paves the way for globalization.
I wish to encourage everyone to adhere to their social respon-
sibility by following the official guidelines and hope that you all
stay safe and sound during the pandemic.

moot court competition in the world.
Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition
The Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competi-
tion is an advocacy competition for law students. Teams
of law students compete against one another through the
presentation of oral and written pleadings to address time-
ly issues of public international law in the context of a hy-
pothetical legal dispute between nations. Їe Compromis
is the springboard for the Jessup Competition. Written by
leading scholars of international law, the Compromis is a
compilation of agreed upon facts about the dispute that
is submitted for adjudication to the International Court
of Justice (ICJ), the primary judicial organ of the United
Nations. Afer the Compromis is released, students begin
researching and preparing arguments for both sides of
the dispute, drafting and editing written pleadings, called
“memorials” and practicing oral presentations. Each team
prepares two written memorials and two 45-minute oral
presentations, one for each party to the dispute ( the “Ap-
plicant” and the “Respondent”). Teams argue alternately
as Applicant and as Respondent against competing teams
before a panel of judges, simulating a proceeding before
the International Court of Justice.
