In 2017, the panoramic ride with the ropeway, which will thereafter also be operated in the long term, will provide a beautiful approach to the barrier-free exhibition grounds.

The new parkland is created in the wake of the touristic development of the “Gardens of the World” and of the surrounding area by Grün Berlin GmbH and is financed from the joint task “Improvement of regional economic structure (GRW)” with federal and state funds and co-financed by the senate department for urban development and the environment.

From the 13th April 2017, Berlin will become the venue of the largest Garden Festival in Germany. The first international garden exhibition of the capital city invites people to an unforgettable experience over 186 days until the 15th October 2017. The hitherto resulting park-land “Kienbergpark” will surprise with an unexpected impressive natural experience in the middle of the popu-lar metropolis. From theme gardens through sunny hillside terraces to open-air concerts – in a varied lands-cape, both traditional gardening art and inspiring exhi-bition contributions for a green living culture await guests of the IGA.

The landscape of the park is approximately 100 hectares, comprising the popular “Gardens of the World”, the wooded Kienberg-Hill, and a part of the Wuhletal-Valley with its water-rich meadows and pastures.

Naturally iN the city iNterNatioNal eNcouNters iN berliNThe landscape architects, selected in a curated process and in collaboration with the Callwey Verlag, are among the best in their profession. In order to present their design concepts for the “International Garden Cabinets”, the landscape architects travelled from Australia, Brazil, Chile, China, United Kingdom, Lebanon, South Africa and Thailand to Berlin, in May 2015.Also Andreas Geisel, senator for urban development and environment, representatives of the embassies of Chile, China and Thailand, as well as Till Rehwaldt, Member of the board of trustees for the international gardens and president of the federation of german landscape archi-tects (bdla), came together on this occasion for the presentation of the designs in the IGA-Market-Hall in Marzahn-Hellersdorf.

Tom Stuart-Smith, one of the most renowned British landscape architects, already sowed the first shrubs and grasses for the garden designed by him on the future IGA site.

In addition, a garden will be created at this site, which is designed by the artist Martin Kaltwasser. The theme gardens are being realised since October 2015. We are previewing here the design concepts for the various gardens – with sketches, visualisations, as well as the ideas and cultural references which were reflected in the drafts. All preparations – beyond the international garden cabinets – can also be followed live and in real time through an online webcam at www.berlin.de.

We are looking forward to the time of the IGA, when the ideas and concepts will come into bloom with the help of dedicated partners and initiatives from Berlin and Brandenburg, Germany and from all over the world.

With the development of the new 100 hectare large park landscape at the location of the International Garden Exhibition 2017 (IGA), the relationship of city and surrounding countryside as well as urban periphery is taken up against the background of the rapidly growing Berlin metropolis. The IGA will initiate trend-setting projects through innovative gardening exhibitions and show exhibition contributions on sustainable life culture. The “Kienbergpark” is created and the “Gardens of the World” will be further developed into a new tourist destination. Impressive landmarks, such as the “Cloud Grove” (Wolkenhain), belong to the overall concept as much as a 5000 seater arena and the first ropeway in Berlin, that connects the parts of the whole area such as Wuhletal, Kienberg and the “Gardens of the World” directly to the subway and will be operated long-term.

One spectacular attraction of the International Garden Exhibition will be the new international gardens. For this, the best landscape architects from around the world designed garden cabinets showing contemporary and international trends in garden art.

eN route to iGa berliN 2017

“ I am glad that we are able to be hosts for landscape architects from around the world, who will present their ideas and work in Berlin. In the garden cabinets of the International Garden Exhibition 2017, current examples of garden art will be created, and thus Berlin will once more become a showcase of trendsetting international landscape architecture.”

The Lebanese landscape architect Vladimir Djurovic is known for his poetic works. In his own words, his design of a contemporary Lebanese Garden Cabinet for IGA Berlin 2017 is

“ a green corridor that exudes a calming effect while leading visitors into the intimacy and cosiness of a sunken garden. Almost all elements of a traditional Lebanese garden are present to bring the atmosphere to life: a fish pond, vines creating shade, the sound of water and tantalising scents.”

VLadimir djuroViC LandSCape arChiteCture

established in 1995 in Broumana (Lebanon), Vladimir djurovic Landscape architecture is a small, highly selective firm with a thorough understanding of all design fields and their interdependence.

the office offers a full range of design services, inclu-ding architectural and interior complements. the firm’s expertise extends from private residences and escapist retreats, to the planning and development of boutique hotels, resorts and public urban spaces.

Vladimir djurovic is engaged in the creation of time-less landscapes through its commitment to drawing out the uniqueness of an environment with a simpli-city of gesture that gives nature the stage. the firm was honoured with prestigious architectural prizes – such as the aga Khan award for architecture – as well as the international design awards and Cityscape architectural review awards.

Vico describes the development of society as if it were an organism evolving in the forest wilderness. The con-tribution by the English landscape architect Tom Stuart-Smith invokes a time before designed gardens, before vegetation. In a sense, his Garden Cabinet reflects the process of vegetation and colonisation: “In this empty wasteland, we begin with opportunistic plants that arrive from seed. Trees begin to dominate and then the process of colonisation by animals begins with a network of paths threaded through the vegetation. After that the huts.”

Thus, the design of the IGA Garden Cabinet begins in a wasteland, with the seeding of an exotic meadow. This would be left to develop for one year. In the following spring a network of paths would be cut into the meadow and several staghorn sumac (Rhus typhina) trees plan-ted. Only later would a place for people be created in the garden.

Lyrically and with an invocation of the world of mytho-logy, Tom Stuart-Smith describes the continued coloni-sation process, which his contribution incorporates: “The giants and the Roman god of fire create the clearings in the forest cover to feed the forges. And so the process of human colonisation begins. Vulcan, the first forge-master, is perhaps also the first cuckold: he discovered his wife Venus and her lover Mars making love in his home. With construction and habitation thus comes deception.”

In his Garden Cabinet, a concrete wall symbolises the house, with a long low bed, also of concrete, and a shallow iron bowl representing furniture. The ground can be paved with fine gravel except for the area around the building fragments, which should have a stone floor as if part of a previous house.

tom Stuart-Smith Ltd is an internationally renowned landscape design firm established in 1998. the scale and complexity of their portfolio ranges from large gardens and parks open to the public to smaller private gardens. tom Stuart-Smith Ltd has a reputa-tion for making gardens that combine naturalism and modernity.

tom Stuart-Smith has also designed a number of gardens for the Chelsea Flower Show. eight of these have been awarded gold medals and three have won “Best in Show”. an exhibition on his work, the first for a living garden designer in the uK, was held at London’s garden museum in 2011.

“This was the order of human things: first the forests, after that the huts, thence the villages, next the cities and finally the academies.”

Since 1989, taylor Cullity Lethlean (t.C.L) has under-taken an investigation into the poetic expression of the australian landscape and contemporary culture. detailed explorations of context, site and community have informed outcomes and enriched the patterning and detail of t.C.L’s built landscapes.

t.C.L realises nationally and internationally impressive, forceful yet minimal works that are attuned to the individual community. this design philosophy has been employed in implementing projects that include urban shore lands and desert trails as well as inner-city parks, gardens and playgrounds. the results have garnered multiple awards; “national arboretum Can-berra”, for example, has received prizes that include the “Landscape of the year” honour at the 2014 World architecture Festival.

Cultivated by FireThe creative power of fire is the focus of “Cultivated by Fire”, the contribution by the Australian firm T.C.L. For millennia, tribes of aboriginal Australians have used fire as a tool for land cultivation. The landscape designers at T.C.L have employed this cultural technology in the design of their Garden Cabinet.

This sophisticated practice known as “Fire Stick Farming” increased fertile growth, providing abundant edible plants for the indigenous people, as well as grasses for the wildlife they hunted. It was also a tool to manage destructive wild fires. The regions where this technique was and still is practiced form a “mosaic” effect of diffe-rently burnt landscapes of varying ages.

T.C. L employs this image of the mosaic in its IGA contri-bution “Cultivated by Fire” and in abstracted form incorporates the ancient cultural technology of “Fire Stick Farming” as a basis of the design. The installation “Cultivated by Fire” abstracts and distils the practice of “Fire Stick Farming” to create a mosaic garden compo-sed of elements reminiscent of both the burnt and rejuvenated Australian landscape

> p LAnDSCApE [pLA] | THAILAnD The Garden of the Mind

the garden of the mind, the contribution by the lands-cape architecture firm pLA, combines tradition and vigour and reflects the contemporary sense of life in Thailand. Its formal language is inspired by the geological processes that created the islands in the south of Thailand and the landscape there. These are monuments to time and place. They are a product of a process that has left no two alike – they are individuals. For pLA, the collection of these individuals represents society and the way in which individuals rely upon – and identify with – each other. With their Garden Cabinet they would like to encourage visitors to reflect upon ideas of the self, time, and the nature of beauty in the abstract.

The designers describe the garden in their own words: “The entrance to the garden space is designed as an abstraction of the estuarine landscape where land meets water and winding rivers feed into the openness of the sea. A serpentine path weaves its way through the garden beds and seemingly disappears behind a wall of hedges. Here, the first of the islands stands to mark this gateway into the world beyond where lies the Garden of the Mind, a representation of a surreal landscape with its own rules of space and reality. The shimmering monuments are a miniaturised interpre-tation of the islands; they rest within a still, dark, mirrored surface. The placement of reflective surfaces on the ground and walls as well as a play with illusi-ons of scale and distance create an endless horizon of islands. In the reflections, visitors will see themselves and others embraced by the monuments and immersed in this poetic landscape.”

p LandSCape [pLa]

p Landscape (pLa) is a landscape design practice based in Bangkok, thailand. having begun in 1997 as a boutique design studio, pLa is now a flourishing company with more than 90 employees in the fields of landscape architecture, design, horticulture and art. pLa specializes in high-end resort, hotel, and residential projects, both in the Southeast asian region and internationally.

pLa believes that landscape architecture is an art that goes beyond the physical and functional aspects of a site. it integrates creativity, culture and local heritage while enhancing the site’s existing environment and ecology. Landscape is the medium and forum by which people connect to nature.

the aim of pLa is to help transform the visions of our clients into memorable designs that are refined, economically sound, sustainability-oriented and capture the essence of the site.

Dule Yuan

The Chinese landscape designer Zhu Yufan has commit-ted to IGA Berlin 2017 with his concept titled dule Yuan [approx. meaning “Garden of Secluded Pleasure”]: “Dule Garden is an important and unique work in Chinese garden history. Sima Guang, a popular 11th-century politician, historian and littérateur of the Song Dynasty, personally designed this garden and wrote “duLe garden”, in which he describes in detail the framework and scenic spots of the garden and establishes and advocates, for Chinese scholars, an independent and introspective mode of thought as well as an idiosyncratic lifestyle; it has since become an important theme in Chinese painting and calligraphy.... Its geometric character is surprising, as it diverges widely from the naturalness commonly believed to characterise Chinese gardens. It also exudes poetic ambience different from that of a traditional European geometric garden.”

For the occasion of IGA Berlin 2017, Zhu Yufan proposes a reinterpretation of the dule Yuan, which could also foster a discussion on – in the designer’s words – “the modernistic problem of the Chinese garden”. The painting of a dule Yuan from the 16th century has inspired Zhu Yufan’s design: “The geometric axis is for-med by a bamboo path, a flower garden and a channel of water; a traditional bamboo cottage [yurt] is repro-duced using modern materials and technology. Mirro-red walls at the end of the axis allow visitors and the bamboo cottage [symbolizing inner space] to appear in the same sightline with natural elements like water and vegetation, thereby stretching the vertical depth of space and blurring the observable boundary between people and nature. The mirrored surface echoes the philosophical quandary of being inside or outside the painting as well as the duality of seeing and being seen, all of which coincides with the meaning of ‘dule’. This flowing, reciprocating, infinite-space consciousness precisely captures the natural and spiritual essence of the Chinese garden.”

Zhu YuFan | Y³C

Zhu Yufan is a professor of landscape architecture at tsinghua university in Beijing. he is the director of Y³C, a landscape planning and design institute that aims to create a platform combining landscape archi-tecture and design, theory, empiricism and practice in order to realise qualitatively premium work on this basis.

the core concept of Y³C is “Carefully Careless” or “calm design”, meaning a natural design where practitioners use gentle gestures to create a peaceful atmosphere, rather than simply exhibiting their expertise and design skills literally and superficially.

the range of Y³C projects includes the planning and design of green-space systems, garden landscapes, memorial gardens, special land use and urban squares, the landscape planning and design of residential buildings, public buildings, streets and landmarked sites, as well as the design of outdoor advertising and commemorative plaques.

Los Angeles Garden: The City of Four EcologiesThe design by Berlin artist Martin Kaltwasser was con-ceived as part of the art proceedings of IGA Berlin 2017 GmbH and complements the positions exhibited here by international landscape architecture firms. His “Los angeles garden” can be understood both as a reference to Berlin’s oldest partner city and as an autobiographical work by the artist. The garden is a detailed replica of the miniature garden island at the Bergamot Station Car park and its immediate surroundings. The Bergamot Station Art Center in Santa Monica is one of the largest complexes of art galleries in Greater Los Angeles and was the site of the 2010 art action “Cars Into Bicycles” by Folke Köbberling and Martin Kaltwasser. The Bergamot Station Car park, which belongs to the art center, shows explicitly how the monoculture of the automobile has almost completely displaced nature.

An 8 x 9 metre, fenced-in lawn, with six high palm trees arranged hexagonally and two opposing benches, is surrounded by an asphalt surface and parked cars. Thus, encapsulated in one of the garden cabinets emerges a critical discourse of an entire urban ideology. The car park incorporates just a few, tiny alibi garden plots, like the million such plots strewn across the urban areas of Los Angeles, a city almost completely homogenised by the monoculture of automobile.

> MARTIn KALTWASSER | GERMAnY

martin KaLtWaSSer

martin Kaltwasser studied art at the academy of Fine arts, nuremberg, and architecture at the technical university of Berlin. he has become known for his partnership with Folke Köbberling. in their work the artists often use leftover materials that they find in waste containers on construction sites throughout the city, thus anything consumed, spent or discarded in the city’s ongoing urban development. For the oikos theatre Festival in 2010, for instance, they built the jellyfish theatre, a spectacular piece of architecture constructed with more than one hundred volunteers in the heart of the British capital.

in addition to temporary and participative urban alterations, the artist’s work more and more often comprises permanent sculptural installations. For instance, his project “here comes the rain again” included building three solid concrete replicas of one-family homes – at 1:10 scale – in the middle of the no-cultivation zone along the flood banks of the Seseke. the work is a critical discourse on the arrogance of humanity in relation to the forces of nature and a commentary on urban sprawl without aesthetic design limitations. in a very practical manner the concrete sculptures also provide unusual seating opportunities along the renaturated river. this installation bears the critical yet humorous signature of the artist, which can also be found in the realisation of the L.a. garden.

African BouquetWith “african Bouquet”, GREEninc from South Africa interrogated the concept of enclosure and freedom. They explain their approach as following:

“ Early hominids migrated across the earth from Africa. With their increased ability to control environments they also developed an insatiable need to control their possessions and territory. To possess is to survive, be happy and free. In sharp contradiction, possession often comes at a price, and ironically, this price is freedom. Colonialism, apartheid, slavery, xenophobia, racism, genocide and war all illustrate the need to control our world at the cost of freedom for others.

> GREEnInC | SOUTH AFRICA

Even today, geographical boundaries become lines of contention and restriction of freedom. Gaza, Western Sahara at a larger scale, but the fence around a piece of land or a hedge could also be a restriction of free-dom.”

In their concept, the landscape designers explored the ability of landscape to transcend boundaries. It is critical in their design that the landscape of the garden cabinet could be viewed from outside the boundary hedge. “This communication to the outside would entice engagement and closer inspection of the inside”, explains the designer. “The narrow entrance to the cabinet garden allows visi-

tors to enter or exit one at a time. A fragile looking landscape made of light metal frames lies like a marooned ship on an inclined beach.

The hull shape of the structure draws a connection with transportation of possessions and goods between lands-capes. Wispy dune grasses grow through rusted metal frame and tells a story long forgotten. (…) Spun copper pots are suspended in the metal lattice structure and represent vessels containing precious gifts from Africa. Giving, sharing and transcending boundaries. The gift is a bouquet of flowers of annual and perennial plant species native to Africa – an “african Bouquet.”

greeninC

Founded in 1995 by partners anton Comrie and Stu-art glen, greeninc is an award winning landscape architecture firm based in johannesburg, South africa. it is renowned for contemporary design over a wide range of scales, typologies and contexts in South africa and abroad. Whether it is dealing with cultu-rally-loaded heritage sites or functionally driven urban environments, the practice – often in collabo-ration with other professionals – is dedicated to the unique resolution of every project through research and experimentation.

greeninc counts many of the country’s foremost companies among its clients. more recently, the practice has been undertaking more public and insti-tutional work, often in urban environments as with the Braamfontein regeneration project and rosebank open green space framework. For projects such as the Freedom park in pretoria, the office has been awarded by the institute for Landscape architecture in South africa and during the World architecture Festival in Barcelona (special mention).

tereSa moLLer

teresa moller works in Santiago, where she occupies herself intensively with the landscape of her native Chile. precise observation of what lies before her informs all her designs and work processes. diversity shapes her work methods: at the start of each project, the area’s elements that are worth protecting are identified and the natural environment, ecology and local architectural traditions are assessed.

in teresa moller’s own words: “exploring the landscape in order to fully appreciate what is existing in the site is always my first step.” thus, every project is a direct and unique result of its environment. the work has an architectural base, a geometry that structures the landscape over which the vegetation interacts more freely. her work is characterized by its simplicity and teresa strongly believes that in that simplicity lies its force. in her native Chile she has been able to realise projects at locations ranging from the atacama desert in the north to the Lakes region in the south, as well as from the pacific coast in the east to the andes mountain range in the west. of particular note is her punta pite, a walking trail 20 km long on a strip of coastline jutting out into the sea north of Santiago, and, in striking contrast, her parque de la punta, with old cypress trees, orchids and other indigenous species, which provides a point of departure and destination for the coastal walks.

Being under the trees

Teresa Moller’s work is known for its poetry, which she achieves through simple means of design. Her Garden Cabinet “Being under the trees” plays with the interac-tion between geometric arrangement and natural move-ments and processes. She emphasises that she benefits from nature while she works with it in her projects.

The basis of her concept for the IGA is a forest-like garden of nothofagus trees indigenous to Chile. Like the farmers who earlier shaped and structured the land – for exam-ple, by digging drainage ditches – Teresa Moller also shapes her garden using lines that provide its structure. The planting of nothofagus trees proceeds along these staked lines. More-or-less randomly placed raw marble slabs create a surface for visitors to move freely about the garden without having to follow a prescribed route. Small benches made from fragments of raw marble invite visitors to linger, relax and dream.

The aim of “Being under the trees” is to recreate a garden characteristic of Chile using simple materials such as travertine marble extracted from the country’s north and the indigenous nothofagus trees from the south, both emblematic of the Chilean landscape. The garden is an homage to the country’s natural beauty. It will surrender to the powers of nature – no limits will be placed on the proliferation of the vegetation and its overgrowth on the marble slabs.

aLex hanaZaKi LandSChaFtSarChiteKten alex hanazaki’s firm, based in São paulo, is one of the most renowned names in Brazil’s modern landscaping industry. With a degree in architecture and a passion for landscaping, alex hanazaki is, above all, an aes-thete, who creates his projects with a unique combi-nation of realism and emotionality. he possesses the ability to transform landscapes into stunning scene-ries, extracting from nature forms, colours and tex-tures that, in his capable hands, can be translated into modern landscaping.

through proficient compositions he creates minima-list environments with carefully selected details, producing locations whose purist aesthetic and mea-ning are almost tangible. For hanazaki, landscaping is an important step to a better quality of life. his biggest challenge so far, however, is designing gardens as if they were works of art.

in 2014 alex hanazaki became the first Brazilian landscape architect to receive the prestigious aSLa professional award, given by the american Society of Landscape architects.

The contribution by the Brazilian landscape architect Alex Hanazaki is based on the importance of the four elements of nature – fire, water, air and earth. Although they are essential for human survival, he feels they are often overlooked.

The main idea for this garden is to create a scenic and interactive space with bold lines to stimulate the senses. Corten steel retaining walls create different visual levels while gravel is used for permeable paving. The visitor enters the space with a perspective to an extensive reflecting pool and, through the canopy of two trees, accesses a bridge to the spot where one can see the sculptural stone walls emerging from the reflecting pool.

Water fountains within the stone walls provide the visi-tor a soothing sound. From a certain perspective fire appears on the reflecting pool, creating a unique and poetic effect. Materials and vegetation will be defined accordingly.

“ What’s fascinating to me as a landscape architect is that the IGA offers not only the framework for traditional garden architecture in the “Gardens of the World”, but with the theme gardens also a platform for contemporary and modern approaches of various countries and continents. With these gardens from different cultural backgrounds, the profession presents itself not only to the interested garden show audience, but in particular provides experts with valuable material for discussion. I’m already looking forward to the results.”

“ The designs speak very individual languages. Each one is a precise cultural statement in itself and, viewed together, a snapshot of contemporary garden architecture, which is rarely experienced in this intensity.”

“ The “Los Angeles Garden” of the Berlin artist Martin Kaltwasser is the planned, accurately detailed replica of a mini Garden Island of the Bergamot Station Car Park in Los Angeles along with its immediate environment. Kaltwasser’s design reflects the Californian metropolis in a somewhat tongue in cheek manner, and plays with typical L.A. aspirations and realities. The activities of the part-ner cities Berlin and Los Angeles are still characterised by cultural and artistic exchange and should now receive a permanent location in the “Gardens of the World”.

“ With the development of the new 100 hectare sized park landscape at the location of the Interna-tional Garden Exhibition 2017 (IGA), the relationship of city and surrounding countryside as well as urban periphery is taken up against the background of the rapidly growing Berlin metropolis. With the help of the large-scale project IGA Berlin 2017 as well as the “implementation of the tourist master plan “Gardens of the World”, future-oriented city and landscape development integrate with topics of location business development, social sharing and the green life culture. The international garden cabinets and the “Gardens of the World” are thereby the nucleus of an international dialogue of cultu-res. Impressively, the best landscape architects from five continents show how a contemporary dialogue of different cultures of the world can develop through garden architecture.”
