However, many media practitioners believe that the growth of ADEX by 2.3% from January 2012 to August 2012 to RM7.1bil was not align with Malaysia’s consumer confidence. Consumer confidence rose to a six year high and more than two-thirds of Malaysians (28.9 billion) were optimistic about their job prospects and personal finances. The less than stellar ADEX numbers could be due to the cautious sentiment in light of the uncertainty in the United States and shaky situation in Europe.

stAtus oF GroWth oF DIGItAL MeDIA As CoMpAreD to other MeDIAIn 2011, advertising via the internet grew by 22% compared to that of 2010. This was second largest component growth of ADEX in 2011. Digital media is growing strongly in Malaysia and its share of ADEX v that of Newspaper was 1.5% in 2011 compared to 1.3% in 2010. Digital media is booming amongst the Gen Y Population but the cost of devices and cost of internet connection are restricting a more robust growth of the media. The Malaysian Government is taking steps to overcome these obstacles by granting a rebate to working adults between the age of 21 to 30 for the purchase of mobile devices and apparatuses and most internet service providers in Malaysia have substantially brought down the cost of internet connectivity and are constantly hastening the speed of connection. The tradition of obtaining the news via the morning newspaper(s) delivered to homes is still strong in Malaysia. Media owners acknowledge this and many have adopted the following chain to deliver news (SMS ALERTS to INTERNET APPLIANCES to PRINT which would carry an in depth editorial and pictorial coverage).

CIrCuLAtIon FIGuresThe circulation figures of 21 National Newspaper Titles, 2 Free and Control Newspaper Titles and 53 Consumer, Trade and Specialized Magazine Titles were audited during the period July 2010 to June2011. The Average Net Circulation Figures per publishing day for the period July 2010 to June 2011 was 6,342,261 copies compared to that of 6,109,859 copies for the corresponding period. The marginal increase of 4% in the Circulation Figures was mainly due to the growth of the Circulation of the Malay Language Newspapers.

a) Sales of e-editions (retail sales + single subscription + bulk subscription).

b) Other paid distribution of e-editions.

The digital editions divide on:1) E-edition (replica)2) Digital mutation (non-replica)

A “digital edition” is an electronic version of an audited publication, unchanged throughout the circulation period for a given circulation frequency, retaining the crucial features of the print edition, in particular the identification of the edition (the date and the issue number), the linear navigation format (such as pagination or any other method allowing the user to progress from front cover to back cover in a linear progression), and the logo.Digital editions are divided into e-editions and digital mutations.

An “e-edition” is a digital edition of at least one of the editorial mutations, carrying the same — in its form and subject matter — press material (in particular the same editorial material, announcements, classifieds and advertising content) as the print edition. The requirement of the identical form and subject matter of an e-edition and its print version does not refer to inserts and gadgets. In the event the printed edition includes editorial material that the publisher has no rights to publish in other formats, such material can be removed from the e-edition without infringing on the requirement of the identical form and subject matter of the e-edition and its printed version. The press material may be expanded in the e-edition or adapted to the technological advantages of the electronic medium.

“Digital mutations” are digital editions other than e-editions.

The total free-distributed copies consist of: a) Personalised addressed distribution to individual

recipientsb) Addressed distribution to wholesale recipientsc) Anonymous addressed distribution to individual

recipientsd) Distribution through paper carriers, hostessese) Distribution from marked stands / exposition pointsf) Distribution with other audited publicationsg) Other distributionh) Distribution of e-editions

Audits are performed at the publisher’s office every year. Since 2006 the fiduciary companies PriceWaterhouseCoopers and Ernst & Young are auditing parts of the Daily News, Sundays and Weeklies. There are about 250 titles. The other about 1400 titles are audited by the specialized staff of the bureau.

The publisher is committed to pay CHF 50,000 — in case he declares intentionally the wrong circulation figures.
