Why study at TAFE Queensland?

Front Cover - Deiter Dizon (Diploma of Screen and Media)Born in Laguna province, an area devoted to agriculture, two hours from the Philippine’s capital, Manila, Deiter Dizon grew up as an ordinary kid with low self-esteem. “These feelings actually helped me to understand my strengths and weaknesses and find out how I could be better in the future.”

Deiter studied computer science at university, supported by a caring family and friends. “My family has very humble beginnings, but I’m proud of where I came from. I’m the youngest of four children,” he says. “My father is an agricultural engineer while my mother is a dedicated housewife who took care of us very well since we were young and for that I’m always grateful.”

In 2010 Deiter received a scholarship from the Australian Government and moved to Brisbane to take up study in a Diploma of Screen and Media with TAFE Queensland to indulge in a more creative passion and profession.

Having completed his diploma and after doing some freelance work, Deiter is taking steps to create his own digital agency (www.inventy.com.au) specialising in photography, video, animation, graphic design and web. “I’ve come a long way in developing my portfolio, and study opened a lot of opportunities for me. I’ve worked with some great clients and together we’ve created some really unique and interesting pieces, “ he says. “There should always be a personal touch to keep work distinct and instil sentimental values. With my photography, I always try to keep it expressive instead of trying to impress people with surreal ideas.”

Deiter doesn’t follow trends, he sets them. His avant-garde and unique style has attracted attention from interstate and international clientele. He has worked with Penny Skateboards on website development, product photography, a design customiser application and a range of other digital media. “Penny Skateboards has been one of my most rewarding projects; it’s a breakthrough Australian brand that has received massive growth internationally including Japan, USA, Singapore, New Zealand and Latin America and an amazing company to work with.”

In February 2011 Deiter relocated to Perth where he now lives with his girlfriend and has just arrived back in Australia after scouting for a wedding location in the Philippines. “We’ve done a bit of overseas travel this year, a gap before getting stuck into work again.”

Student satisfaction is important to us

“I used to work for IT related companies in Hungary but chose Queensland because of the warmer weather, nice beaches and of course I didn’t want to study in a crowded city. ”

I wanted to study and improve my English and IT skills, and knew that TAFE would be the best option. I searched all the VET providers in Brisbane and decided TAFE Queensland was the best choice due to its great facilities, on-campus services and other students’ reviews.

“I met lots of people including great teachers and other staff, as well as the international team.”

Whenever I asked someone for help, I always got answers in a friendly way which gave me more confidence in talking to people.

I learnt so much about IT and server network management, plus how to use specific hardware and software, and most importantly how to sell my knowledge in the IT field. At TAFE Queensland I was able to gain practical knowledge which is a huge advantage in my university studies, and as a result of my Diploma gained one year’s credit towards my university course.

“I absolutely recommend TAFE Queensland to other international students and believe TAFE Queensland should be proud of its good reputation.”

“I ultimately wanted to immerse myself in making fashion.”

Mako grew up in Japan and worked in fashion retail and with a fashion magazine publisher before arriving in Australia to pursue an art history degree at university. “I wasn’t enjoying my studies very much and when I asked the course coordinator what jobs would be available to me once I graduate, she said I could either be a museum curator or an art teacher.” She says, “Neither prospects appealed to me, because I ultimately wanted to immerse myself in making fashion.”

Mako began asking friends and researched her study options before deciding to study at TAFE Queensland. She initially had very limited sewing experience, so she found the practical study and small class structure better suited her needs. Mako found all the teachers to be very experienced - they shared their knowledge and experiences to enable students to achieve their goals.

“Now I am in the industry working full-time and actually using the skills I learnt.”

After she graduated from TAFE Queensland, Mako found part-time work with one of TAFE Queensland’s fashion industry partners, Glitter and Dance and was later offered a full-time position with them that same year. The family run Brisbane company has been a dance fabric supplier since 1994 and also helps customers create the perfect dance costume. Glitter and Dance has regularly provided internship and work opportunities for TAFE Queensland’s fashion students and graduates. “Now I am in the industry working full-time and actually using the skills I learnt, from designing and pattern making with CAD to the manufacturing process.”

“I am very glad that I chose TAFE Queensland.”

“I thought studying the Diploma of Nursing in Cairns would be the right starting point.”

Way back one year ago, I was on a working holiday in Cairns. I really wanted to stay because of many friends and the weather, but I also thought that I had to do something more with my life.

Growing up in Korea, I was a carer for my grandmother and very close with her as my parents both had to work. My life experiences lead me to thinking about nursing and caring for the elderly and the chronically ill; I thought maybe I should be a nurse, maybe I have a connection with the elderly.

I really enjoy my course.

“Naturally, in my case, I really enjoy the aged care placement and training that makes up part of an Enrolled Nurses job. ”

During hospital placements, I get to care for all patients, but really enjoy getting the care for the elderly and chronically ill. Student duties in second semester placements also include toileting, bathing, giving injections (restricted area, only certain kinds), neurological observation, monitoring therapy, etc. in addition to being a carer.

“The biggest challenge for me is also becoming my success. ”

The language and cross cultural barriers are challenging. But what I found is that if you are sincere and really enjoy nursing, the Australians really warm up and open up to you. I feel really supported by the International Student Unit and teachers for the bigger barriers. And I am very thankful for this kind support.

I have aspirations for employment in Australia and further education at university to start my career knowing that this will give me more options back home and in Australia, which has become a special place to me also. But for now, I’m focusing on the hard work.
