CEO Overconfidence and the Long-run Performance
of Firms Acquiring Public and Private Targets
Prof. Dr. Junming Hsu*
Abstract This study investigates (1) the long-run performance of firms following
their mergers and acquisitions of public and privately held firms and (2) the impact
of acquirers' CEO overconfidence on the performance of these two types of mergers.
We find that firms acquiring public targets tend to underperform their matching
firms in the long run, but those acquiring privately held firms do not. This finding
reveals that the acquisition of private targets can generate more advantages than that
of public targets (e.g., exploiting private information, bargaining lower prices,
improving the target’s operations, and obtaining technologies or knowledge). We
also discover that overconfident firms perform worse than non-overconfident firms
for acquiring private targets, but not for acquiring public targets. These results
imply that non-overconfident CEOs are able to catch the advantages of acquiring
private targets, but overconfident CEOs are not. More specifically, overconfident
CEOs may overestimate their abilities to handle post-merger operations or
overvalue the targets.

Effect of Corporate Social Responsibility on Enterprise
Value of Deposit Money Bank in Nigeria
Dauda Ibrahim Adagye1*, Dauda Musa Ibrahim2
Abstract This study sought to determine the effect of CSR (i.e. Environmental
Expenditure - EE, Community Expenditure - CE, and Employee Expenditure -
EmE) on Enterprise Value – EV, with particular reference to quoted deposit money
banks in Nigeria. The study adopted the correlational design, and a population of 21
banks was considered. Out of this population, 15 banks were sampled through the
purposive method. Panel regression was used to analyze the data, which were
collected from annual financial reports of the sampled banks. The results of the
analysis indicated that, overall, CSR’s effect on enterprise value is statistically
significant; meaning that corporate social responsibility expenditure has significant
effect or association with enterprise value (i.e. EV). The study recommended that
banks in Nigeria should maintain, and possibly increase their CSR expenditure
rather than looking to reduce or even eliminate it as they seek to cut down on their
business cost. This is because of the likely negative effect it might have on their
business in the long run as documented by the outcome of this study.

Impact of Audit Committee Membership Gender
Diversity on Quality of Financial Reporting of Deposit
Money Banks in Nigeria
Dauda Ibrahim Adagye* Abstract This research ascertained the impact of audit committee membership
Gender Diversity on financial reporting quality of quoted deposit money banks in
Nigeria. It is an ex-post facto research by design. The population of the study is all
the Fifteen (15) quoted deposit money banks on the Nigerian Stock Exchange as at
31st December, 2016 which was narrowed down through a judgmental sampling
technique to ten (10). The sampling technique is based on the following criteria: (i)
that a bank must be in operation during the period covered by the study that is 2006
through 2015; (ii) that a bank must not have merged or taken over by another during
the period of the study; and (iii) that a bank must not have been delisted on the
Nigerian Stock Exchange at one time throughout the period of the study. Data
relating to financial reporting quality were sourced from the annual reports and
accounts of the sampled banks. For analysis, the study adopted the Multivariate
Regression Techniques (Fixed and random test regression) to establish that the
independent variables (Gender Diversity) on one hand explains a proportion in the
dependent variable (earning Quality) on the other hand, Pearson correlation
coefficient was used to test hypothesis 1 which examined the relationship between
gender diversity and financial reporting quality. The study finds that actually,
gender diversity does not relate to financial reporting quality of Banks in Nigeria.
it is therefore recommended that regulatory authorities’ organize training and
seminars for audit committee members as being practice in other developed
countries and lastly, to further assist regulatory authorities, the academics should
step up researches in the area in order to document more on the dynamics in audit
committee membership in banking and other sectors of the economy.

Challenges of Trade Services by Banks: Bangladesh
Perspective
Shah Md ahsan Habib*
Abstract The paper attempts to examine the challenges of trade services by banks
with special reference to Bangladesh. Trade facilitation by banks in Bangladesh is
particularly crucial when involvement of banks is significant in the country’s trade
facilitation. The paper concludes that trade based money laundering and compliance
risks are required to be addressed for effective trade services in the country.

Establishment of the Shari’ah Framework for the
Application of Somatic Gene Therapy in Human
Zakiah Samori1, Fadilah Abd Rahman2
Abstract Human gene therapy is best known as a transfer of nucleic acids to either
the somatic cells or germ cells of an individual. It introduces genetic materials which
have therapeutic purpose ranging from inherited genetic disorders to certain
malignancies and infectious diseases. This medical scientific breakthrough has
received lucrative demand worldwide as it offers potential treatment to cure genetic
diseases in human at the molecular level. Since then, thousands of people have
already participated in the trials thus it is likely to be part of medical practice in the
future. Despite of the tremendous benefits that it promises, this new biomedical
technology has given rise to several contentious issues from the ethical and religious
point of view. Since it comprises of two different therapies namely somatic and
germ line gene therapy, each involves different procedures thereby poses different
legal ruling and decision. This study attempts to propose a complementary model
of the Shari’ah framework on the human gene therapy with special reference to the
somatic gene therapy. This proposed framework is designed and developed to fulfil
the lacuna of the Shari’ah Framework on the application of the somatic gene therapy
after an in depth study of its position from the Shari’ah point of view. In achieving
this, a detailed analysis and outlook into the Qur’anic evidences along with the
Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad pbuh were carried out. Following this, its position
from the pragmatic approach of the Maqasid al-Syariyyah (Objective of the
Shari’ah) and the Qawa’id Fiqhiyyah (Islamic Legal Maxims) is also analysed in
further detail. Various fatwas (Islamic verdict) decreed by the variety of fatwa
councils from all over the world are also highlighted. This model of Shariah
Framework would serve as the ethical basis for the application of somatic gene
therapy in Malaysia and beyond (particularly Muslim countries) especially for
Muslim doctors, scientists and Muslims at large. For Muslim countries such as
Malaysia where Muslims makes the majority of the population and Islam as the
official religion in Article 3 of its Federal Constitution, this framework is deemed
to be important reference in providing the essential guidelines on the permissibility
of this therapy. Consideration of the position of Somatic Gene Therapy from the
Shari’ah perspective is undeniably crucial in any attempt to regulate Somatic Gene
Therapy in any Muslim countries in the future.

Empirical Evaluation of Average Percentage of rate of
Fault Detection of Software GA-based Regression
Test Case Prioritization Strategy
Dr. Attila Hertelendy*
Abstract Our initial research attempts to answer the role that mentoring and
transformational leadership play in enhancing crisis response efficacy in emergency
leaders, and will extend the analysis to how participation in mentoring and the
source of mentoring influence the relationship between receipt of transformational
leadership behaviors and the demonstration of crisis response efficacy of a crisis
team leader. First, this presentation will investigate how transformational leadership
and mentoring separately influence crisis response efficacy. From this, an
investigation into how experience with mentoring and source of mentoring
moderates the relationship between transformational leadership and crisis response
efficacy will be discussed to further awareness of the antecedents of improved crisis
response of crisis team leaders.

Study on Situational Leadership Influences on Job
Satisfaction & Performance
Fatima Abdalla1, Hemalatha Sadasivuni2*, Dr. Gantasala Prabhakar3
Abstract Abstract Leadership is an art of motivating a group of people to act
towards a common goal. In the fast-changing world a leader’s effectiveness depends
on how well he handles the situation and is related to the leader’s traits or behavior.
Situational Leadership is an adaptive leadership style and is not based on a specific
skill. The leader modifies the style of leadership to suit the needs of the organization
or people. There are two mainstream models of situational leadership, one described
by Daniel Goleman and another by Ken Blanchard and Paul Hershey. Situational
leadership is one of the famous leadership style practiced by many organizations
but it doesn’t work well in all circumstances. This research study focuses on the
aspect of understanding how situational leadership is likely to affect the job
satisfaction and performance of employees in the case of a merged banking firm in
the UAE. Not only would this support the concept of researching the variable in the
local context, but it would also attempt to at least partially reduce the gap between
the existing literature and the urgency that the topic demands.
