Brass Music forYoung BandsBrass Music for Young Bands contains 15arrangements of well known hymn tunes ina progressively graded format. Parts cor-respond to standard vocal music formixed voices (SATB format): Part 1 sopra-no, Part 2 alto, Part 3 tenor and Part 4bass. The optional 5th part is intended foreuphonium or instruments of same pitchand range. Each part is written for B andE treble clef instruments plus optionalpercussion. Bass clef 3rd and 4th partsare also available.

Beginnings inBrassBeginnings In Brass starts at the beginningof brass playing and proceeds throughcarefully graded units of study until theplaying of simple hymn tunes is mastered.Theory concepts are introduced with theappropriate playing requirements. Thevocabulary throughout the tutor is basicenough to serve the younger student aswell as teachers with minimal brass back-ground. This wonderful educational tool iscompletely dedicated to the beginner andoffers tips from many of the Army’s fore-most musical minds.

1st Book of Hymn TunesThis publication provides a wide range ofsacred and holiday music that is playableby the least experienced instrumentalist. To this end, 1st Book of Hymn Tunes isintended to supplement any establishedinstructional method.

Once a rudimentary knowledge of playinghas been taught and established, beginning brass groups will be able to perform music appropriate to accompanycongregational singing (although a fewmelodies will be pitched somewhat lowerthan the accustomed singing keys—such as “Above the Rest,” “Duke Street,” “I Am So Glad,” “O Come All Ye Faithful”and “Wide as the Ocean”).

As much as possible, these 30 tunes arearranged in progressive order of difficultywith the new concepts for each tune care-fully noted at the bottom of the score page.

All music in this publication will sound com-plete with only three players. All parts arewritten with two staves: The top line in allparts contains the melody while the secondline contains a harmony part. (Part 2 is thealto harmony, Part 3 is the bass harmony.)

InstrumentationB Parts 1-2*—B Cornet

E Parts 1-2—Horn, Soprano Cornet

B Parts 1-3—Baritone, Trombone, Euphonium, B Bass

Basic Brass,Winds &PercussionBasic Brass, Winds & Percussion contains35 arrangements of sacred hymns andchoruses by Thomas Scheibner and editedby James Curnow. Modeled after the 1stBook of Hymn Tunes, this wonderful teach-ing tool is available in full score, B trebleclef, E treble clef, F, C treble and bass clefand percussion instruments books. Eachbook contains all three parts and is dividedaccordingly. For use with congregationsand Sunday schools, each score containsa reference guide to 1-3 different sets oflyrics per tune. This publication is easilyadaptable for all brass, woodwinds, stringsand percussion instruments, and includesspecific instructions on how best to use themusic with any combination of instruments.

QuickstartQuickstart is designed to give the begin-ning band a solid start and quickprogress, so that they can be ready toplay in public after just a few hours ofinstruction.

Quickstart covers the same materials as astandard “Book 1” and is geared specifi-cally for Salvation Army bands. Hymnswith words included are used for practiceexercises to reinforce the importance ofboth text and music. One component ofgetting bands off to a “quick start” is toseparate B and E instruments into differ-ent classes. When this is not possible, anE options section is included to allowthese groups to play some items together.

One binder contains enough materials foran entire class, including a student andteacher book, a Quickstart tunebook, quizzes and other supplemental material, along with a 2-CD set for listening andpractice.

American Instrumental Ensemble Series

The American Instrumental Ensemble Seriesoffers practical, playable arrangements for thefull gamut of brass combinations—from smallbrass ensembles to brass bands—with com-plete instrumentation.

Each annual edition replicates the successfulformat of the inaugural 1987 edition with 16fresh, contemporary arrangements written atfour specifically graded levels. With four care-fully defined levels of difficulty, music direc-tors have a valuable tool for the selection ofmusic appropriate for the abilities of theirgroups—from developing first-year combina-tions to the most advanced ensembles.

The American Instrumental Ensemble Serieshas been designed to offer the director opti-mal versatility. There is a wide range ofchoice first in covering the basic quartetinstrumentation, and then in assigning partsfor larger ensembles.

The optional euphonium/baritone 5th part and the optional percussion parts greatlyenhance these arrangements.

Also, there are a number of non-score partswhich provide transpositions for F horn, bass clef trombone, euphonium/baritoneand tuba. A C instrument part is added foroptional flute, oboe and violin. This serieswill be helpful to the growing number ofchurch and school instrumental directors, who are adapting the American InstrumentalEnsemble Series for their concert band andorchestra ensembles (see Adapting theAmerican Instrumental Ensemble Series forConcert Band or Orchestra on facing page).

A special feature of the American InstrumentalEnsemble Series is the addition of a key-board/condensed score (and beginning withthe 1994 editions a keyboard/condensedscore part). This is helpful to conductors forscore study and is valuable when a part ismissing in the ensemble during rehearsal andperformance. These arrangements shouldnever be performed without the four primaryparts and the keyboard/score/part could beemployed to play the missing part(s) on akeyboard instrument.

A demonstration recording (cassette 1987-1994, and CD from 1995) is produced foreach annual edition of the American

Instrumental Ensemble Series. This attractiveaddition to Salvation Army recorded musicliterature will be useful to bandmasters andmusic directors in their repertoire planningand rehearsal preparation.

While this music is primarily intended forworship and evangelistic services, it is alsoappropriate for concerts and educationaluse. Each arrangement includes a well-known hymn tune or gospel song that isclearly presented, allowing the import of the hymn and song texts to provide anunambiguous gospel message.

Grade Level CriteriaGrade I

Grade I is targeted at beginning ensemblesand these very easy settings can be prepared for performance after just a fewmonths of regular instruction. Rhythms havebeen kept extremely simple (whole, halfand quarter notes) and 4/4, 3/4 & 2/4 arethe acceptable time signatures. Articulationmarkings and dynamic changes are minimal. Keys are limited to B, E and Aconcert (i.e. C, F and B for B instruments,G, C and F for E instruments etc.). With the short endurance of beginners, the maximum length is 50 measures.

The pitch ranges for Grade I have beenlimited primarily to an octave (please noteAIES range limitations for each of the fourgrade levels on this page).

Please refer to the PRICE LIST ORDER FORM for price and availability from our worldwide network of distributors.4

• Sold by individual title. (See Price List Order Form)

• All scores are full scores.

• Each score contains a keyboard/condensed scorefor study.

• A keyboard/condensed score/part is included forpiano/organ.

• Percussion and euphonium parts appear onthe score but may be treated as optional.

• Each measure is numbered for easy reference.

Grade II

Grade II provides easy arrangements fordeveloping ensembles with contrastingstyles and interesting concepts, but still withvery few technical demands. Both Grade Iand Grade II will be useful for moreadvanced groups as additional basic repertoire.

Rhythms include eighth notes, but dottedeights are avoided. Ranges are extendedand accidentals are more common (avoid-ing F’s and B#’s etc.). Articulation anddynamic markings remain basic. The maxi-mum length is expanded to 60 measures.

Grade III

Grade III arrangements are written at anintermediate level of difficulty and representa considerable step up from Grade II.

Sixteenth, triplet and dotted rhythms areadded with a corresponding increase inoverall rhythmic complexity.

There is a significant expansion of range,an extension of maximum length, and thefull gamut of articulation markings anddynamics are employed.

Grade IV

Grade IV is appropriate for intermediate/advanced groups with a further extension ofrange and general difficulty. Conductorsshould be judicious when selecting GradeIV items and sufficient rehearsal time shouldbe scheduled to permit the thorough prepa-ration that will be required.

Cornet Solos AlbumFourteen cornet B solos with pianoaccompaniment to suit a range of performing abilities. (Please refer to thePrice List Order Form for a list of titles.)

The cornet solo repertoire is alwaysexpanding and this album contains bothnew and established B cornet solos withpiano accompaniment. Some of the mostexperienced Salvation Army composersare featured in this compendium of 14solos which vary in length and difficulty.“Trumpet Call,” “Sing Hosanna” and“Calabar” were especially composed forthis album. “Wonderful Day” and “All IHave Is Thine” were originally composedwith piano accompaniment; the remainderare available with brass band accompani-ment. The relevant band journal number issupplied where appropriate.

Eb Instrument SolosAlbumFourteen solos with piano accompanimentrepresent a broad range of style and diffi-culty. (Please refer to the Price List OrderForm for a list of titles.)

Solos have been composed especiallyfor this album by experiencedSalvationist composers and arrangersinclude new solos “Glory to His Name,”“Only One Intention” and “Teach Me.”Also included is horn duet “JesusLoves Me” with optional flugel hornpart.

Using electronic keyboards it is a simpleprocess to transpose any of the keyboardparts to accommodate a Bb cornet, trum-pet, trombone, baritone or euphonium, orany concert-pitched instrument. Likewise, previously published solo B albums canbe easily “re-pitched” using the transposefunction on the keyboard to accommodatean E pitched instrument.

American SoloistsAlbum with piano accompaniment

Through the years, the American SoloistsAlbum has provided instrumental soloistswith tone and variation repertoire based onwell-known hymns. It was conceived to bene-fit the gamut of brass instrumentalists, fromthe aspiring young musician to the maturevirtuoso. The contents are playable andequally attractive to any level of performance.

Due to the sporadic nature of this series inits early years, no two issues are the same. For example, Album 1 includes seven B tre-ble clef items arranged by Erik Leidzén andAlbum 2 features three brilliant B treble cleftrios.

Album 3 consists of 10 devotional solosarranged by several of today’s most celebrated writers. Initially produced for B treble clef instruments, C treble and bassclef parts have recently been producedwhich are now included in Album 3. Album 4includes seven B treble clef itemsarranged in an inspirational style byKaren Krinjak. With American SoloistsAlbum 5, the repertoire for theadvanced and developing soloist isenhanced. Flourish, a double CD thatis both the performance and accom-paniment music of this album, isavailable separately. Album 6 has 10lyrical solos from several of theArmy's leading composers for B tre-ble clef, C treble and C bass clef. Most recently, Album 7 has beenmade available which offers 15excellent Christmas solos for Btreble clef and C bass clef instru-ments. The majority of the music isaccessible to all levels of instru-mentalists.

Classic SolosB cornet, E horn, B trombone (trebleclef), and B euphonium (treble clef) solosoriginally published 1929-1973 are reprint-ed with piano accompaniment to suit arange of performing abilities. Sold by title.(Please refer to the Price List Order Formfor a list of titles.)

American Band Journal

Please refer to the PRICE LIST ORDER FORM for price and availability from our worldwide network of distributors.

Since its inception in 1948, the AmericanBand Journal has been providing practicalsacred music for church services and concerts.

Each issue contains generally four or fivetitles per package. The American BandJournal encompasses grades 3 through 7in today’s musical curriculum and is a valu-able medium through which school andchurch music directors can obtain qualityintermediate and advanced arrangements.

Originally conceived for the traditionalBritish brass band (all parts in treble clef),F, C treble and bass clef parts laterappeared and are now available to accom-modate a variety of instrumental combina-tions. (Please see Adapting the AmericanBand Journal for Concert Band orOrchestra.)

Nine musicians may adequately presentthis music: two first cornets (because offrequent use of divisi), one second cornet, two horns, two trombones, one euphoniumand one tuba complete the minimumgroup. Although the instrumentationappears to be limited, there is much con-trast in scoring, making full use of theavailable colors or timbres in the brassidiom. While performance is possible withas few as nine, this music is equally con-vincing when played by a full complement,as demonstrated in recordings by manyworld-renowned bands.

The optional parts, E soprano, B flugelhorn, B baritone, bass trombone and per-cussion are included in the score. The music is complete without these parts, however, their use will enhance the performance as long as the basic partsare covered.

Each item in the American Band Journal iswell suited for educational purposes andconcert repertoire, but the primary aim formuch of this music is church worship serv-ices. Each selection embraces a well-known hymn or patriotic song, however, composers often have titled theirworks programmatically or commemora-tively, thus resulting in the fact that titlesmay not include the name of the hymn.

The American Band Journal is producedbiannually. The spring issue offers differingstyles of music for year-round concertsand programs, but the fall issue focusessolely on Christmas repertoire and hasbeen extremely helpful in providing fresh, quality repertoire for the host of concertsgiven by schools, churches and communi-ties during the Christmas season.
