Pastoral Letter – July 2014 ‘Ecumenical’ is an odd word. We often think of it in terms of united services once or twice a year with other local churches, but it is broader than that, coming from a word (oikumene) which means the whole inhabited earth. For a local church to be ecumenical is to look beyond its own domestic concerns to the neighbourhood, the borough, the city, nation and the world beyond. At the same time, to be ecumenical is to recognise our partnership in the gospel with other Christian traditions in our own neighbourhood, and, lest we become too self-absorbed, with other churches (in our case) in the Lea Valley Area, the Thames North Synod and within the three nations of the United Kingdom in which we are part of the United Reformed Church. All those relationships, particularly the latter one, come to mind as I prepare to attend the Church’s General Assembly in Cardiff. I have been to quite a few Assemblies in my time and they always remind me of our intention to be an ecumenical church in all its aspects, multicultural and inclusive. Those who are immured in practicalities and church structures are always challenged to widen their vision and think of our mission to the world. Those who are worried about our reducing and ageing membership are challenged to look beyond themselves to renewing their vision of God’s purpose, celebrating the shoots of new growth and embracing signs of the Kingdom among us. We often feel vulnerable as an organisation, but, thank God, the commitment and strong support of its members has sustained the Church through the past few years. We certainly haven’t achieved all we aspire to be, but meeting at General Assembly always reminds me of God’s bigger picture, and the way, even in our uniqueness and oddity, we are called to be part of it. In the Book of Reports to Assembly (available on the URC’s website*) the report of the synod moderators is one which our church meetings would benefit from reflecting on together. It speaks of the changing landscape in the UK and how local churches are responding to it. The word ‘ecumenical’ appears again as the moderators urge fresh attention to be given to our

Page 4: Interim Moderator: Rev Ray Adams July/August 2014 · 2014-07-09 · Interim Moderator: Rev Ray Adams July/August 2014 ... who are worried about our reducing and ageing membership

relationship with other churches, but also to our internal relationships as congregations of the URC as the lack of identifiable ordained ministry in many places puts at risk our coherence and unity, and as too many local churches go it alone. There are causes of rejoicing however in signs of initiative and renewal. The moderators challenge us to look for similar signs in our own local churches, and to give them breathing and growing space. They cite the story in 1 Kings 18 where people longed for the end of a period of drought. Elijah told Ahab that he could hear the sound of rushing rain, and, after prayer, he sent his servant seven times to look to the sea. Finally he saw a small cloud no bigger than a person’s hand, which was the precursor to the life-giving rain which the land so craved. The report asks, are we an expectant church looking for fresh signs of God’s renewal and blessing? If not, what will it take to make us so? The life and health of our local churches will be in the forefront of the minds and subject of the prayers of all who attend General Assembly. Please pray for them too. Celebrating God, in whom we live and move and have our being, we pray for the grace that grooms our hearts to receive one another in love, the vision to see the world and each other through the eyes of God, the courage to engage in the challenge of discernment in our community, and for the deepening of our discipleship that the General Assembly could bring. We pray in the name of Jesus, deep well and living water. Amen (General Assembly prayer – adapted)

God bless you

Ray

Happy birthday, Friendship Club! This year, the Friendship Club celebrates its 65th birthday - no mean feat in this day and age. It was started in 1949 by Mrs Alice Towers, the wife of the Minister, Rev Leonard Towers. The original aim was to provide a meeting place one afternoon a week (Wednesday) for young mums with babies, toddlers and children at school, who could become somewhat isolated during the day caring for their little ones. The meetings finished at 3:30pm to enable the mums to collect their children from Chase Side Primary School, almost next door. A crèche was provided for babies and toddlers, and my mother, Mrs Maisie Wiley, ran it for several years with Sylvia’s mother, Mrs Norah Coombs and Mrs Freda Johnson. Over the years, the function of the club has adapted to modern day living with many young mums now working either full time or part time. We now cater for older, retired folk so that they can meet together with their friends. It is open to everyone, but we make it clear it is a Church organisation and always open with a Bible reading and prayer. We have had many interesting speakers over the years, plus lovely food and an annual outing. We are now aiming for our 70th birthday in 2019, and would greatly value your prayers and support to help us to achieve our goal.

Enfield Battalion trip to Legoland Windsor Saturday 26th April 2014

On Saturday 26th April, members of the Anchors and Juniors in the 3rd Enfield Boys’ Brigade joined with others from Enfield Battalion for a trip to Legoland Windsor. Around 60 boys from 9 of the 10 Companies in Enfield Battalion took part in the trip, including 11 boys from the 3rd Enfield. After travelling to Legoland by coach, the boys got the chance to go on various rides including rollercoasters, the log flume, swings, river rapids and much more, as well as have a go at the Lego driving school. There was also a chance to look around some of the models in the park, including those in Miniland (models of well known places around the world) and the Star Wars area. To finish the day off there was an opportunity to look around the Lego shop before we headed home. The weather was quite good on the day and a very enjoyable day was had by all! Our thanks to all those who were involved in organising the trip.

St George’s Day Parade in Enfield Sunday 27th April 2014

On Sunday 27th April, the annual St George’s Day Parade in Enfield took place. Members of the 9th Enfield Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers all took part in the parade where they were joined by members of the Scouting and Girlguiding movements from all over Enfield. The parade began at Enfield Grammar Upper School and proceeded through Enfield Town, past the Civic Centre to Enfield Grammar Lower School, where they were addressed by the Mayor of Enfield as well as Scout and Guide leaders. As part of the event each group said their group’s promise. It was a very well attended event on what was a lovely day.

The Boys’ Brigade - North London Zone Company Section 6-a-side Football competitions On Saturday 10th May, the North London Zone 6-a-side Football competitions took place at Bush Hill Park Playing Fields. There were two competitions taking place, these were a Junior (Under 14) event and an Open event. Teams in each competition played each other in a league format and the highest placed team was the winner, with the highest place Enfield Battalion team in each age group winning the Enfield Battalion trophy for that event. Members of the 3rd Enfield took part in the Under 14 league, which also featured teams from the 11th/18th Enfield, 133rd London and 4th Barnet. The Open league included teams from the 11th Enfield, 133rd London and 1st Barnet. After a good afternoon of football (some of which was played in quite heavy rain!), the overall winners of the Under 14 event were the 3rd Enfield and the overall winners of the Open event were the 11th Enfield. This means that our boys retained both of the trophies that they won in this event last year - very well done to them all!

North London Brass Live in concert at Christ Church URC

Wednesday 14th May 2014 On 14th May, we were delighted to welcome the fantastic North London Brass to Christ Church for an evening of musical entertainment. The band - who were originally formed in 2010 in our very own hall - treated us to a wonderful evening of music, with a set including a number of film compositions as well as some traditional brass band favourites. There was a voluntary retiring collection for Christian Aid, as the concert took place during Christian Aid Week, and we are delighted to report that over £200 was raised towards our collection. Thank you to North London Brass for performing for us and thank you to everyone who came along!

Holiday at Home Friday 16th and Saturday 17th May 2014

We held our annual Holiday at Home in May and it was well attended as always. There were craft activities organised by Judith, Christine and Olive; amazing painting by Linda which is thought provoking for us all as she tells a story as she paints; laughter at Dad's Army; an interesting quiz by Stephen and line dancing when lots joined in - but it was fun to watch as well.

Christian Aid Week

We would like to say a huge thank you to all those who helped in any way with our collecting for Christian Aid

Week. As well as collecting in the local streets we also had a concert from North London Brass and a lunch following

morning worship to raise funds. In total we raised £833.80 - thank you to all those who helped out or donated!

We were all delighted to be invited to the wedding of Julia and Thivakaran at Christ Church URC on 10th May. The happy couple held an English and Tamil speaking service which many people travelled to from around the world. We continued the celebrations at the reception for nearly 500 guests! Julia changed from her white wedding dress, to two different traditional outfits and looked amazing in all three. The happy couple travelled to the Maldives for their honeymoon, which they found very relaxing. Everyone at Christ Church wishes them a long and happy marriage.

3rd Enfield Boys’ Brigade Annual Company Display and Presentation Evening

On Monday 19th May, the 3rd Enfield's Annual Company Display and Presentation Evening took place in the hall at Christ Church. Our Display is an evening where families of the boys, friends of the Company and members of Christ Church are invited to come along as we put on a number of items to show some of what we do at Boys' Brigade. At the Display this year we were delighted to welcome Nick de Bois MP as our Guest of Honour. Nick is the Member of Parliament for Enfield North (the constituency which we are based in) and presented the awards, badges and trophies to the boys at the start of the evening. We are extremely thankful to Nick for joining us for this special evening and we are very grateful for his ongoing support of the work done by The Boys' Brigade. Following the presentation of awards, a number of items were put on including a figure marching routine and gymnastics by the Anchor Boys and Junior Section, a quiz challenge by the Company Section, team games featuring the entire Company (plus audience participation!) and more. To finish the evening, a video was shown to show what we've been up to in this session so far. The Boys’ Brigade - North London Zone Athletics competition

Saturday 7th June 2014 On Saturday 7th June, the annual North London Zone Athletics competition took place at Pickets Lock Stadium. The Enfield Battalion Athletics trophy, which is awarded to the highest placed Enfield team in this competition, is the oldest BB trophy in Enfield, having first been awarded in 1893 (to the 3rd Enfield, of course!). Members of the Junior Section and Company Section in the 3rd Enfield competed against others from around North London in a variety of track and field events, as well as some relay races. There were individual certificates on offer for the winners of each event, as well as overall trophies for the Junior Section and Company Section competitions. Congratulations to Frankie, who won the year 4 egg and spoon race and the cricket ball throw in the Junior Section competition, and to Lewis, who won the age 14/15 javelin in the Company Section competition.

Overall, the 3rd Enfield finished 8th in the Junior Section competition (6th in Enfield Battalion) and 5th in the Company Section competition (3rd in Enfield Battalion). Well done to all those who took part! The overall winners were the 1st Barnet (North London Zone Junior

Animal Blessing Service Sunday 15th June 2014

This service was a Family Parade Service, which was led by members of Christ Church’s Worship Group. People were invited to bring their pets along to the service with them and so we were joined by a host of dogs, cats, hamsters, guinea pigs and even some ‘pets’ in the form of soft toys! We looked at the story of creation as told in Genesis 1, with the help of some volunteers from the youth organisation to help tell the story! During the service those with pets were invited to bring them to the front of the Church for a blessing, which was given by the members of the Worship Group who were leading the service.

LEA VALLEY AREA of the THAMES NORTH SYNOD

Lea Valley Newsletter, June 2014 Edition no 9

It is a few months now since Tim Clarke wrote his last Newsletter in his capacity as Convenor of the Area Committee. As yet, no successor has been found. We don’t want to wait till we have a new Convenor before sending out another Newsletter, so as Secretary I am stepping into the breach. I hope you find this edition interesting and helpful. It is being sent to all Ministers and others in pastoral charge and all Church Secretaries, but it’s intended for all the people of our churches. So do please ensure that everyone has the chance to read it, and bring particular items to the attention of those who need to see them. On the deployment front, the main development since Tim wrote is that a vacancy has been declared in the new pastorate which comprises Bush Hill Park, Christ Church Enfield and Lancaster Road, to be known as the North Enfield pastorate. We now await developments! Elsewhere, Chris Hall has announced that she is retiring from her post as Local Church Leader at Cheshunt. Her last service will be on October 12th. Chris has achieved a lot at Cheshunt, and once life in the Enfield area settles down a bit we expect her to find new things to

Page 23: Interim Moderator: Rev Ray Adams July/August 2014 · 2014-07-09 · Interim Moderator: Rev Ray Adams July/August 2014 ... who are worried about our reducing and ageing membership

do there to occupy her time. Trinity, Enfield will shortly be saying goodbye to Bill Tardy, and the congregation look forward to welcoming Louise Morrissey, which will involve her moving within the Enfield Methodist Circuit where she is at present the minister of Grange Park and Ponders End Methodist Churches. Other churches are busy creating their Church Life Review documents, which should help them to take a good look at themselves and see where their priorities lie. Of course, for any church without ministerial leadership the CLR will become an essential document when the time comes to look for a minister. Needless to say, we spend a lot of time on Area Committee thinking about churches in this position, in the hope that we may be able to help in some way. But as you will appreciate, with 22 churches and an allowance of just 6 ½ units of stipendiary ministry this is not easy. One of the immediate problems for many of us is how to fill the pulpit Sunday by Sunday. Wearing my other hat as Area Lay Preaching Advocate, may I urge you to do all you can to develop the talents and experience of your own members in leading worship. In time no doubt some of them will find they have an aptitude for this and decide to work towards becoming an Accredited Lay Preacher. There are lots of training opportunities available. Just speak to me if you need any help. Area Committee has its own membership problems. Not only are we missing a Convenor, we also need to

Page 24: Interim Moderator: Rev Ray Adams July/August 2014 · 2014-07-09 · Interim Moderator: Rev Ray Adams July/August 2014 ... who are worried about our reducing and ageing membership

replace Keith Berry as our Ministry and Mission representative – this is a job which anyone who has been a Church Treasurer should find within their capacity. We do have a great need for people with expertise in either financial or building matters. At present so much of this kind of work falls on the shoulders of Eddy Webber, who has served our churches faithfully for so many years. Anyone who felt able to offer help in this general area, whether for one-off tasks or on a regular basis, would be helping us all so much. Now, there are three situations in which we ask you to give us information so that we can help you. First, some of our churches report that they have been visited by people, often pastors or ministers, who offer assistance by preaching and perhaps in other ways. Sometimes they claim (falsely) that they are doing so with the knowledge and permission of the URC. These offers can be very tempting to a church with finds itself short of leadership. But beware – there are many potential problems about letting such people in. Please let us know of any such approach straight away, and we can give you guidance and enable you to distinguish between those offers worth taking up and those that should be left strictly alone. Another thing to beware of is a group of people who start attending and then ask to become members. Remember, once they are members they will have an equal vote with other members and could take the church in an unwelcome direction. Again, please do seek advice. Secondly, do let us know if you are considering any

Page 25: Interim Moderator: Rev Ray Adams July/August 2014 · 2014-07-09 · Interim Moderator: Rev Ray Adams July/August 2014 ... who are worried about our reducing and ageing membership

major redevelopment project. (You may not realise this, but Synod consent is required for such things!) We will normally be able to help you by setting up a Development Group to assist you. (This is one of the short-term jobs for which we need people from time to time.) Thirdly, as you probably know, churches need to obtain Area Committee approval where it is proposed to invite someone other than an ordained minister to preside at a celebration of the Communion or to conduct a baptism. But we are going to simplify this. For 2015 we plan to introduce a system whereby, if you let us know in advance the names of people you expect to invite to preside during that year, we will give a single approval, which will allow you to invite them as many times as you wish within that year. Please contact me if you wish to take advantage of this. In conclusion, it may be worth letting you know that the next meeting of Area Committee will be on September 30th. If there is anything you think we should be aware of, or should be dealing with, please let me know at least a week beforehand so I can try to ensure it has a place on our agenda. With best wishes Adrian West, Secretary 020 8360 6226 [email protected]

On Saturday 21st June, the Boys’ Brigade in London held an event called Life 2 the Max at Felden Lodge (BB National Headquarters). Life 2 the Max is held once every two years and is an activity day for members of all sections. 15 boys from the 3rd Enfield joined with around 400 young people from around London for a fantastic day out. During the day, there was the chance to try a variety of activities in the “Activity Village”, including an inflatable climbing wall, laser combat style game, gladiators-style challenge, circus skills and more. There was an “It’s a Knockout” team challenge, where teams competed against each other on a series of challenges. The young people took part in the activities in their age groups and also spent some time in the “Worship Zone”, singing and hearing about our amazing God! A fantastic day out was had by all and we are extremely grateful to all those who planned and ran the event.

The Apostles’ Creed On Sunday 22nd June, Tom Boorman led our morning service. It was a thought provoking time that definitely got people talking. His talk was based on the Apostles’ Creed which is thought to be the most comprehensive statement of faith followed by 2.2 billion Christians in the world today. The Apostles' Creed was first mentioned in 390 AD and it is thought to be based on the writings of the 12 disciples. It talks about the three persons of God; God the Father, Jesus Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit. Tom put questions to small groups of us in the congregation which led to some varying thoughts and active participation in the service. The readings were Genesis 1:1-13, 1 Corinthians 15:3-7 & 12-14 and Acts 2:1-4 & 17-21. During the collection, we also had a lovely song sung by the younger relations of Sunder and Sheela. You can listen to Tom’s service at www.ccurc.org.uk/media.php

A big thank you from the 3rd Enfield Boys’ Brigade to all who have helped us in recent months by collecting

Sainsbury’s Active Kids vouchers. The last few vouchers are currently being counted but it looks like we will finish with around 2200 vouchers, which will be used to acquire new

equipment for the boys to use. Thank you all!
