What they say
• If e-newspapers take off, the savings could be hefty.
• At the The San Francisco Chronicle, for example, print and delivery amount to 65 percent of the paperʼs fixed expenses.
• However note that papers face a tough competitor: ʼtheir own Web sites, where the information is freeʼ.
• And they have trained a generation of new readers to expect free news.
• So, what will be the price of a e-newspaper?

• What about DRM protection of content?
– DRM-0 - no security– DRM-1 - password protected– DRM-2 - individual name (on each page)– DRM-3 - device recognition, only once ‘code’ enabled
• already being broken by SS-OCR (ScreenShot+OCR)
• iTunes DRM is only for iPOD’s– any music from the iTunes Store can be copied any time on
any audio CD and then to any other MP3 player• value of DRM is ‘what’.....?

There is no standard (yet)
• PDF is not (easily) capable of being dynamicly ‘re-madeup’ for various e-reader devices
• XML is the way to go
– ‘epub’ is the XML for ‘reflowable’ digital content, already in use in Adobe Digital Editions, Sony Reader and Stanza Reader (iPhone) and more to come.....

• Look at Amazon - closed strategy, huge market, now 120.000 titles, read the first chapter for free
– Selling e-books for $9,99, paperbook might cost $33,99• the long-tail approach?• 1000 x $9,99 or 300 x $33,99• lower costs with digital distribution, so more earnings
– Publishers did not know that Amazone would sell e-books for that price....
• How did they make this deal?• Lawsuits to come?

• Innovation in the music industry did not come from the music industry itself - Apple with iTunes– who is in control of the chain, or will there be new ones?– will witers publish directly?– what will people want to pay for e-content?

• What role do publishers want to play?– how to react on Google Book Search......

• We have not reached the €100 price yet (AFAICS research)• Better user-interface, no buttons, but ‘touch-screen’• Datacommunication WiFi but also UMTS/G3• One standard would have to fit all......• One agreed standard on DRM protection (if needed)• e-book shop direct on the e-reader• We might want color.... soon to come• We might want video.... might take a bit loner

What to do for printers
• Not easy to predict
– content is in the hands of ‘others’• but what about design, page-layout?• Adobe InDesign CS4 can export to ‘epub’ directly• Quark XPress with 3rd party XTensions
– the distribution chain is in the hand of ‘others’
• but is this for publishers the key to do?• so can you do something here?
– e-readers are developed and produced by ‘others’
