Interested in studying the shadow economy? (also called: underground economy, black economy, informal economy)

In shadow markets , transactions are legal but hidden from the authorities to avoid taxes and regulations. Many aspects of such markets are still poorly understood, such as:

• Why isn’t the shadow sector larger in high-tax countries such as the Scandinavian?

• What factors determines the size of the shadow economy? • How does shadow markets affect efficiency? • To what extent do regular firms participate in shadow activities?

If you are interested in studying problems related to the shadow economy, contact:

• Quantile/marginal treatment effects, DiNardo-dekomponering

• Hvordan påvirker avkastningen i pensjonspoeng arbeidstilbudet?

kompetent arbeidskraft?

NINA (www.nina.no) coordinates an EU project entitled: “Assessing the role of economic instruments in policy mixes for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services provision” (http://policymix.nina.no/).

NINA is looking for a competent environmental economics student as part of the Norwegian case study.

The thesis could be written under the following broad themes:

– Use of quantitiative impact evaluation tools to assess the impacts of voluntary forest conservation

– Estimation of opportunity costs of different land uses as input into forest reserve site selection models optimising the combinations of low costs and high biological values.

– Applications of environmental valuation methods (contingent valuation, choice experiments or other methods)

– Assessment of efficiency and effectiveness of new economic instruments for forest conservation (payment for ecosystem services, auctions, ecological compensation schemes to municipalities)

– Assessment of distributional/equity impacts of conservation policies

The project will cover some costs and data collection and option for a desk at NINA at CIENS (right across the bridge from Blindern). There may be options for paid work on other porjects.

If interested, contact Henrik Lindhjem ([email protected]) or David Barton ([email protected]).

Mulig Masterprosjekt i miljøøkonomi i samarbeid med NINA

NINA (www.nina.no) leder et EU-prosjekt med tittel: “Assessing the role of economic instruments in policy mixes for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services provision” (http://policymix.nina.no/).

Hosting UIO’s Master students in economics

• The Department has hosted several UIO’s Master students in the past, and it would be happy to host more in the future

• We have the capacity and infrastructure to host up to 3-4 Master students per year

• The Department staff can possibly provide supervision, provided that the Master thesis topics are related to the four core areas mentioned above

• Interested students should contact the Department staff (see contact persons above)

• Students that are accepted will spend an internship period at NUPI to write their Master theses.

• Possibly, scholarships can be offered to some of the students to work as assistants on some of the Department’s existing projects

Bio-economic research

Questions we are working on include: What are the economic consequences if harvesting

leads to an evolutionary response of the fish? How much – and at what age should Arcto-Norwegian

cod (torsk) be caught each year? Do social norms among fishermen help or hinder any

management attempts by the government?

Possible topics for a master thesis could be: How might climate change influence the harvesting

game between Russia and Norway in the Barents Sea? How are fleet dynamics influenced by the social and

natural environment?

Unit for MacroeconomicsResearch fields• Time-series econometrics

– Econometrics combines economic theory and statistics in the analysis and testing of economic relations. Time series econometrics brings the temporal dimension into play, enabling a distinction between short and longer-term relations between economic variables.

• Macro econometric modelling– Macro econometric modelling combines various econometric analyses of time series.

Furthermore, the macro econometric models have input-output relations connecting the model’s product supply to its applications. There is an emphasis on using the conceptual and definitional terminology used for the national accounts.

• Business cycle analysis and forecast– Macroeconomic models and other methods are used to shed light on driving forces in the

Norwegian economy over the short and medium term. Business cycle reports, including normally three- or four-year forecast, are published quarterly in Economic Survey. Analyses of historical developments are also conducted at irregular intervals.
