JAN. 27, 2011 ANNUAL CHILLI SUPPER Dear Fellow Kiwanians, First, I would like to mention how much I appreciate the great number of individuals that attend our breakfast meetings on a regular basis. These meetings are held quite early in the morning and I realize that you do have an option to sleep in or attend. Your weekly participation is crucial to the continued success of our Hobart Kiwanis organization. It's hard to believe that I am already hearing talk of our largest annual fundraiser, the Kiwanis Peanut Sale. I ask that you remain mindful of the great impact this event has on our ability to provide substancial financial support to the education of our local students. Please remember, when asked to serve on a committee or assist in other ways, how important your participation is in the success of this important event. As a reminder, it will soon be time to put together the slate of officers and board of directors for the upcoming year. Your willingness to serve in one of these capacities would be greatly appreciated. I hope that you are all enjoying the lovely Spring weather and hope that you have a wonderful Memorial Day holiday! Sincerely, Tim O'Brien A DEVOTIONAL: (Mother's Day tribute) God's Wings After a forest fire in Yellowstone National Park, forest rangers began their trek up a mountain to assess the inferno's damage. One ranger found a bird literally petrified in ashes, perched statuesquely on the ground at the base of a tree. Somewhat sickened by the eerie sight, he knocked over the bird with a stick. When he gently struck it, three tiny chicks scurried from under their dead mother's wings. The loving mother, keenly aware of impending disaster, had carried her offspring to the base of the tree and had gathered them under her wings, instinctively knowing that the toxic smoke would rise. She could have flown to safety but had refused to abandon her babies. Then the blaze had arrived and the heat had scorched her small body, the mother had remained steadfast....because she had been willing to die, so those under the cover of her wings would live. (758 kids served.)k John Hevel presented Jim Burns with his "Distinguished President" pen from last year.k John and Judy Hevel attended a Joan Martin Elementary School program and were given a wonderful check

for Riley Hospital in the amount of $232.44. Those kids are really into this, selling 50 cent stickers which are posted on all of the walls in their school. THANK YOU, JOAN MARTIN SCHOOL!

PROGRAM: Larry Brown, a strong backer of "Bear Country Park" introduced Chip Greenberg as the presenter of their slides and ideas. Bear Country Park of Hobart, Indiana would be the home of the I Play Clean and the Butkus Foundation on what is now Robinson Lake and St. Sava's properties. Chip's slides and literature explained an ambitious plan for his Building My Community Action Group as an educational resource for children kindergarten through post high-school for continuing studies of nutrition, fitness, public safety and education. The ambitious plans for a campsite, new lake recreation (Wakeboarding, included) and refurbishing the St. Sava's area to full use must be approved by the City Council and presented to all citizens as they are doing today with Kiwanis. O'Brien PRAYER: by Reita TorinGUESTS: Simon Gresser (our speaker)HAPPY BUCKS: Mike Adams is happy to be collecting these happy bucks. Rich Riba was happy to be well enough to be back and gave great credit to his caring wife, Judy. All of the men at Rich's table and many others gave a buck to see him back! Golfers liked that River Point Golf Club will be reopened and Tim O'Brien gave a run-down of the fees. Judy Hevel for the donors of food and time for Rebuilding Together, coming up on April 24th. Kay Moody for spring. Caitlin's soccer team won in Cincinnati! Jim Moody glad to be home from France and Steve Toth is home. Jim Burns paid to tell us 2 very good jokes. Mayor Snedecor for the Hobart Canine Program. Reita Torin for her man's birthday and her happiness to share it with him.HAPPY BIRTHDAY sung to Gene Torin and Steve Toth.50/50 @ $ 140 and Janet Deal drew a lowly 3 of hearts, but Bill's hug was warm and loving!ANNOUNCEMENTS:k A thank you letter from Rebuilding Together for our $1500.00 contribution was read. Plan to help on 4/24k Sharon Tarry wishes there were more high schoolers applying for our $1500 scholarships. If you know a

senior of Hobart HS, Lake Station HS or River Forrest HS who needs this help, they need to apply now!k On April 22nd, Hobart YMCA's Community & Media Day includes light lunch and news of a new children's program.

k Mike Adams told that the 4th of July Parade theme is "Freedom Isn't Free" and that Bill Isakson will be our Grand Marshall this year. Tom Ehrhardt wants pictures from the past with captions for the program.

k May 8th is the Annual Postal Food Drive, and our club has always helps sort and store. Plan to help.PROGRAM; Jack Grennes introduced Simon Gresser, head of the Hobart Canine (K-9) Unit who told us of the excellent police work done with our 3 great dogs and their partners. Simon received first place in Indiana in 2009 for his work with Rommel, his German Shepard. All three dogs are used for tracking/trailing, narcotic detection, evidence recover, and protection purposes. (Continued on p.3)

p.3We learned that Simon is learning to train these dogs, spending 16 hours per month in this endeavor.Our K-9 dogs do wear vests, given by our elementary schools! Simon also said that businesses can get their names on the BUSINESS BITES BACK T-shirts for $100.In the picture on the left: Simon Gresser tells Kiwanis members his love of his dog and his job with the K-9 Team.

A good time was had by all!

HAPPY BUCKS: Reita Torin collected and gave $2 for being cheerleader at bowling. Margo Brown gave to announce Saturday's band concert at the Orchard, proceeds to Food Pantry. Shirley Rhody for the bowlers, along with many bucks for the great Mayor's Ball at the Orchard Barn last Saturday. $2 for Reita's birthday from Gene. Kay Marcus thanks the police who called her at 1 am to tell her her shed was open!Jim Moody for getting to sit with his Kay. Carol Shingler's Virginia trip visiting family

was great. Phil Speer is glad he wasn't stuck in Paris this week due to the ash cloud. "For life after taxes" by Karen Robbins. Tony DeBonis for the great news that their son, Mike is now on staff for the Washington Post! CONGRATULATIONS to Mike DeBonis! Mike Adams is pleased that teachers receiving awards will be presented those in their classroom, surprise! Rosemarie Ehrhardt for the Ball and Bowling party. Judy Candiano for winning the money tree at that fabulous ball. Bari Siwy for bowling night. Marilyn Leach for successful surgery.HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Reita Torin and Karen Robbins50/50 @ $ 165. Reita felt lucky, but wasn't. She drew royalty, the King of hearts. Queen of Spades evades.ANNOUNCEMENTS:k MAY 1ST "A Night for Allisa Mathis" at the American Legion for lung transplant funds.k Thank you note read from Hobart Little League for our donation, and we are invited to come to a game!PROGRAM: Jim Burns introduced Mark Olsen, Chiropractor, who explained his strong belief that alternative medicine, that which prevents illness rather than coping with it once it becomes an emergency, is the proper way to greater health. "You should prevent fires." Healthy drinking of copious amounts of water, super eating habits and moderate exercise are the preventives that will work to keep you young.SCRIPTURE: Monica Wiley read that when one is in trouble, you should pray.APRIL 28 MEETING NOTES by Janet Deal. ( Janet has taken the liberty to forego printing all of the notes from this Forum meeting to print more pictures of our involvement with the Kiwanis house for Rebuilding Together.) Many Happy Bucks were given for the very successful REBUILDING TOGETHER. The "Kiwanis

House" and the others that our members worked on, and the food committee will be reported to "ONE DAY" by Nicky Rodriquez. A thank you to Judy Hevel & the food committee for RT as well as to each member who worked (and are still

working) to bring joy to those families in need. About 40 of our members helped! Reita Torin sent a sign-up sheet for working the RELAY FOR LIFE coming up in May. Our Key Club is very involved in this great cause! 50/50 @ 191.50, but Judy Candiano missed the Queen.

BIOGRAPHY OF NEW MEMBER: I was raised in Whiting, In. Graduated from George Rogers Clark high school. Moved to Hobart in 1976, married to Ron Siwy for 41 years. We have two children, Patrick is married and lives in Topeka Kansas and is a production director in

radio. Michael is also married and is a school teacher at Boone Grove high school. He also is the head baseball coach at Hammond High. I

have been president of Chip & Chambers bowling league for 5 years. Active in Hobart Youth Basketball for 25 years and presently I'm in charge of concessions for the program. Bari Siwy
