A two days Interactive Workshop on “Jackfruit for Livelihood and Enterprise

Promotion” was organized by the Meghalaya Institute of Entrepreneurship (MIE), Shillong in

collaboration with the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE), Guwahati and University of

Agricultural Sciences (UAS), GKVK Bangalore on the 29th

and 30th

July, 2016 in Indian

Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE), Guwahati. The main objective of the workshop is to make

the prospective farmers & entrepreneurs aware of entrepreneurial opportunities present in the

Jackfruit which is abandoned in North East Region. About 43 (forty three) partners from

Khasi Hills and Garo Hills of Meghalaya and 32 (thirty two) self help group members and

other officials from Assam attended the workshop.

Day 1 (Opening Session):

Dr. B.D.R Tiwari, IAS, Secretary (Planning) and Executive Director, MBDA/MIE

was the Chief Guest of the Workshop. There was lighting ceremony followed by a speech

from Shri Manoj Kumar Das, Director, IIE Guwahati.

In the opening speech, the Director of IIE expressed his fondness for the fruit of the

day. He also discussed the various health benefits one can derive from eating Jackfruit at all

its forms whether at its raw stage or tender stage and its ability to cure diabetes.

Shri B.K. Sohliya, Officer on Special Duty, Meghalaya Institute of Entrepreneurship,

Shillong welcomed all the participants who attended the workshop both from Meghalaya and

Assam and welcomed especially the Chief Guest and all the dignitaries in the occasion. He

gave a brief background on the initiative of the jackfruit workshop and the initiative of

exploring the underutilized fruit with vast potentials for uplifting the livelihood of the people

with the support and link from the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Bangalore,

College of Home Science, CAU Tura, CARD-KVK, Kerala and Dr. B.D.R Tiwari, IAS,

Secretary (Planning) and Executive Director, MBDA/MIE.

Dr. S. Shyamalamma, Associate Professor& PI, Department of Biotechnology,

University of Agricultural Sciences, GKVK, Bangalore was the Resource person for the

workshop. She expressed her happiness after seeing the products prepared and brought by the

partners who had attended the Training on Value Addition of Jackfruit in CARD KVK, CAU

Tura and UAS Bangalore. She stated that although this processing of jackfruit is at a small

scale level but if they work as a group they can improve quality of the product by good

packaging and branding. She described the uses of jackfruit and its importance and informed

about the new improved genotypes which are especially suitable for processing.

This was followed by a speech from Smt. M. B. Roy, Director, Directorate of

Commerce and Industries, Meghalaya. She described her ways of utilizing jackfruit at home

because of the value of the fruit as it is rich in vitamins and minerals. She stated that we

should explore the utilization of this naturally organic jackfruit and the various opportunities

for setting up micro enterprise in this unit.

The Chief Guest, Dr. B.D.R. Tiwari gave a speech on the importance of jackfruit as a

rich source of vitamins, minerals and its various health benefits. He informed that jackfruit is

also used as quality fodder for livestock. He also shared about the various Indian musical

instruments and quality boats made out of jackfruit tree. Lastly, Dr. B.D.R. Tiwari requested

IIE, Guwahati to conduct hands on training on packaging and local food preservation

techniques and thereby promote consumption of jackfruit at all stages-tender, raw and ripe.

The Vote of thanks was given by Smt. I. Dkhar, OSD, Meghalaya Institute of

Entrepreneurship.

TECHNICAL SESSION:

Presentation from Dr. Shyamalamma, S. Associate professor, UAS Bangalore:

Dr Shyamalamma gave a presentation on the value of Jackfruit and its different

utilization. She explained about its health benefits and showed the different uses of Jackfruit

in enterprise promotion at its tender stage whereby the tender fruit can be canned and brined

to improve shelf life as well as to preserve for off season sales. She stated that the demand for

tender jack is very high in Maharashtra, Punjab, Haryana, and other North Indian states and

similarly it can be created in North East by providing the marketing facilities to sellers and

buyers. At its ripe stage, Juice, Jam, Squash and Pulp can be made. The seed from Jackfruit

can be grind and the flour can be used in chapathi / roti at home scale. It can be used in

bakery products by reducing the maida content up to 50% in preparation of cakes, cup cakes,

biscuits and bread. Jackfruit papad is also one product which can be prepared from jackfruit.

Its production and utilization is higher in coastal belt from ages, thus, its production from

women SHGs needs to be encouraged at the production place to avoid unnecessary transport

of almost 50% waste from Jackfruit such as rags, rind and seeds. She stated that this type of

activity needs to be encouraged from ministry of food processing by creating processing

facilities at a common center.

Presentation from National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC): Shri Robert H. Touthang, Assistant Director, NCDC- NE Region on behalf of the

NCDC gave a brief presentation on the National Cooperative Development Corporation

(NCDC) and the types of assistance provided by it. NCDC was created exclusively for the

cooperative sector by an Act of parliament in 1963 under the Ministry of Agriculture and

Farmers Welfare, Govt. of India. The mandate of NCDC is planning, promotion and

financing programmes for economic activities through cooperatives. The activities funded by

NCDC are setting up of new processing units, modernization and expansion and

diversification of existing units. The two main types of assistance provide are:

a. For Project- For creation of fixed assets and infrastructures.

b. For Business development- Margin money assistance and Working capital loan.

The rate of interest at present is 11.25% and 10% p.a (variable) for tribals.

After the presentations, practical demonstrations on preparation of jackfruit jam and chips

were shown by Smt. Laila Mannil an entrepreneur and Master Trainer of CARD KVK,

Pathanamthitta Kerala.

DAY 2:

The following day was started by a recap or summing up of the previous days’ session

by Smt. I. Dkhar, OSD, MIE. Following are some of the queries asked by the participants:

1. Financial assistance to purchase various machines for jackfruit processing

2. How to get scheme from NCDC?

3. List of machineries for processing of jackfruit into different products?

4. Packaging.

It was followed by a brief presentation from Sanjeev Barua from the Global Entrade

Company. The Global Entrade Company is an integrated Cold Chain Company in Assam to

cater the North East Region. To prevent food wastages of fruits and vegetables in India the

ministry of food processing industry formulated a scheme called “Cold Chain” in the 13th

Planning commission. Global Entrade, a partnership Firm comprising of JDB Group are also

the joint promoters of this project in Assam.

This company has several components in their unit such as Central Processing Center

(CPC), Collection Centers and Refer trucks. The central processing unit consist of 1000 Mts

of Deep Freezer, 4000 Mts of Chiller, 750 kgs/hrs of Instant Quick Freeze and 540 Mts

Packaging & Grading Line. There are four refer trucks. The Collection Centers are at

Sonapur, Jagiroad, Berpeta, Goalpara and Darrang.

This was followed by a last presentation from Subhash Koroth, CEO, Artocarpus

Foods Pvt Ltd, Kinfra, Kannur, Kerela. He introduced to different types of processed

jackfruit products which are marketed by this company such as Jackfruit pulp, Jackfruit paste,

Jackfruit pieces, Raw Jackfruit, tender jack, jackfruit seed and jackfruit seed powder. These

products can be used in making multi recipes, such recipes marketed are Jackfruit muffins,

jackfruit cookies and Jackfruits ice cream which also has a good market. The pre-processed

jackfruit products are procures from the self help groups. Artocarpus Foods pvt ltd also has a

Retort technology for Jackfruit products.

The Workshop was concluded by a vote of thanks from Smt. I. Dkhar, OSD. She

ended the speech by thanking all the participants for their precious presence and the Resource

persons who shared their experience and knowledge for the progress of the farmers and

thereby making the programme a successful one.
