❖ From Our President’s Desk Gary Miller
Dear Congregants, This year Temple Isaiah moved thecommunity Seder to the second nightof Passover. This left my wife Vickiand me with a dilemma. We have nofamily here and it seemed like thereweren’t many options for the firstseder, other than the dreaded“restaurant seder.” Having sufferedthrough many restaurant seders in thepast, we rejected that option outright. That left the possibility of our holding a seder at our home. With cautious optimism, Vicki and I decided to host aseder and invite other members of the congregation facinga similar dilemma. We found several people who wereinterested in helping us have a seder at our home, and theRabbi found a few other people who might want to join us. We recognized that we would need a lot of help to putthis together. We ended up with 13 guests, with a variety ofexperiences at seders, ranging from never having been toa seder to having led seders in the past. With our guests,we put together a menu, assigned responsibilities and gotto work. It took the greater part of a week to get our house readyfor the seder. Vicki spent a great deal of time making surethat we were creating a positive seder environment. I, onthe other hand, was responsible for the brisket, thepotatoes, and the maror. Each of the guests brought otherdishes from appetizers to desserts to create a meal worthyof our “first time at our home” seder. Since I had never led a seder before, I had a great dealof work to do to prepare myself. I looked at Haggadot andtried to design a seder that would be inclusive and provideall who attended an understanding of how and whyPassover is so important to Jews and Jewish continuity. After all the hard work that we all put into it, we had aseder that exceeded our expectations. Perhaps moreseasoned individuals conducted more traditional seders, but I know that this was the best Passover experience Vickiand I have ever had. The response from our guests wasextraordinarily positive, and this experience has convincedus that we need to find a way to have a seder at homeeach Passover. I hope that you all of had as special a Passover as wedid. Shalom,

Greetings Friends,
Wow! What a lovely seder we had
here at the Temple on the second night of
Pesach. The dinner was sold out! This
year was our first seder with Rabbi Lazar,
who was also joined by his wife Sascha
and his mother Serene. The seder was
informative, fun, interesting and enjoyable.
It was wonderful to hear a child ask the
four questions in Hebrew. The introduction of Cornish
game hens at our Seder dinner turned out to be a delicious
move. The Seder tasted wonderful. If you didn’t join us
this year, you might want to join us next year. Truly a great
Passover experience.
We will have our second Shabbat dinner May 6
immediately following the 6:30 Service. I hope that you will
all join us. As always, it is a great way to catch up with
each other while enjoying some delicious food. We have
tried to keep the cost down as well ($25 per person). Once
again it will be the wonderful menu, thanks to Sherman’s,
who do a wonderful job.
Our Temple’s LGBTQ Twice Blessed has programs
planned for May 24 and June 15, where we will be showing
two great films. It will be an opportunity to catch up with
current friends and make some new ones, while enjoying
the films and refreshments. The flyer for the May movie,
“Yossi and Jagger” is in the Chai Lights. June’s film is a
continuation of Yossi’s story with the film “Yossi” These
are acclaimed films (not documentaries) and I’m sure you’ll
find them entertaining. Members can join us for only $5,
guests $10. What a great way to spend the evening.
I am so excited to share with you the news that we will
be breaking out our new website on a new platform called
Shulcloud in the near future (hopefully within the next
month). All members will receive an email with a link to the
website. The first thing you’ll want to do is update your
personal profile. You will actually be able to view your own
accounts, update yahrzeits, have access to a Membership
Directory (must have password to access) and much more!
Don’t worry, you’ll get great, easy instructions and if you
have any problems or questions you can call us at the
office to assist you.
The streets are starting to clear up as many of our
snowbirds leave for the summer. With that said, stay tuned
for some more of our fun filled Summer Socials. If you
have a great place that you want to suggest for one of the
locations, call me quickly before we schedule them.
Shalom,
Doug Morton

She enthusiasticallybecame involved in Templeactivities. All who knew her loved her warmth, vibrancy, zest for life and charm. Wewere blessed to have knownher and will sadly miss her.

❖From the Rabbi’s StudyRabbi David Lazar
Here we are at yet another very busytime of the Jewish year. We’ve only justfinished celebrating Passover, Pessah -both at home and in the community - aswell as observing Yom Hashoah,Holocaust Memorial Day. And now, in thecoming week, we’ll be dedicating twoseparate days to our relationship with theJewish Homeland. The first, which willoccur on Wednesday, May 11, is YomHazikaron, Israel Memorial Day. This day honors not onlythe memories of those soldiers who have fallen in theestablishment and ongoing security of Israel, but also thosevictims of terror who have been murdered simply becausethey were Israelis. This day ofsadness and introspection leadsup to the annual celebration ofIsrael’s independence, YomHa’atzmaut on Thursday, May12. We will be dedicating ourKabbalat Shabbat service onMay 13 to this central aspect ofour Jewish identities. There are many ways inwhich we show our support ofIsrael. For some it’s plantingtrees, others, getting involved inpro-Israel advocacy. Some of ushave visited the country over theyears, for others it has evenbeen our home. Most of us try tokeep up to date on the newsconcerning Israel and keep ourIsraeli sisters and brothers inour hearts and prayers. We have been blessed overthis past season with a widearray of Israel focused events. Many of the films we have seentogether at the Twice Blessedevents and at our 3rd annualJewish Film Festival wereproduced in Israel and showedus different aspects of Israeli lifeand society. We heard an in-depth analysis of Israeli cinemain recent years from NeilFriedman of Menemsha Films.Musically, we enjoyed the musicof Israeli pop-star Ofer Bashanas well as that of Israeli-American singer-song writer, Ami Yares. In the coming weeks we will have yet anotheropportunity to contribute a bit more to the Israeli aspect ofour Jewish identities. For those who are not yet able toread Hebrew and/or want to get a better handle on theirHebrew language skills, we will be offering a short-intensive course. Mor Buchnick, an experienced language
teacher, will be visiting Palm Springs from Israel and willnot only teach you how to read, but also how to speak andunderstand some elementary modern Hebrew (informationon the cover of this Chai Lights). We are greatly indebted to the World ZionistOrganization (WZO) for partnering with Temple Isaiah forthis extensive educational and cultural program. Foundedin 1897 by Theodor Herzl and the participants of the FirstWorld Zionist Congress in Basel, this importantorganization is crucial to the ongoing connection betweenIsrael and world Jewry. In particular, we’d like to thankGusti Yehoshua Braverman, Chair of Diaspora Activities forthe WZO, and her staffer in the field here in the US, RotemMalach for making all of this possible. Each of us will find our own ways to strengthen ourbonds with the Jewish Homeland since there is no one waythat fits all. But I would urge us all to be part of theconversation and utilize this particular time of year to
intensify our engagement with Israel, it’speople and culture.
Opening soon in our lobby!
Yossi (Ohad Knoller) is the stoiccompany commander of an IsraeliDefense Forces uniton the Lebaneseborder. Jagger(Yehuda Levi), whogot his nicknamethanks to his fun-loving rock star appeal, is the platoonleader. They have a secret. When theywalk off in the snow together, it isn'tbecause they're on patrol--it's becausethey're lovers.
Jagger is more gregarious. Hetells Yossi that he loves him,and longs to hear Yossi say itback to him. He makes plansfor their future together, urging Yossi to leave the armywith him when Jagger's
mandatory service is done. Yossi can't bringhimself to make any promises. "This isn't some. . . American movie," he tells Jagger.
