YEAR OF MERCY

REFLECTION ON THE GOSPEL

The Gospel is one more mouse-trap story where Jesus is presented with an

apparently unsolvable proposition. A group of Jewish fundamentalists, the Sadducees,

whose philosophy was that there is no life after death, comes to Jesus, not to talk

about marriage, but to push their agenda as opposed to Jesus' teachings about the life

and kingdom to come. They invoke the writing of Moses to fortify their proposal to Jesus.

In responding Jesus reminds them that during the encounter that God initiated with

Moses at the "Burning Bush" Moses called out, "Lord", Who is God of the three

foundational persons in the history of Israel, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.

The debate ends with no further words from the Sadducees. Your eye or ear might

have caught something about those who do get married and those who do not.

"Those who are deemed worthy to attain to the coming age and to the resurrection

of the dead neither marry or are given in marriage." These seem words of exclusion.

It might mean that those who enjoy the heavenly experience of being married on this

earth, during this life-experience will not receive eternal life. The single person,

because they are like "angels" and they will rise. These verses seem contradictory

to other Scripture passages and to the sacramental sanctity of Marriage!

Jesus is speaking more clearly of the life to come and the life that leads there.

Being married or single is not the question. All human beings are invited to live on

this earth without making answers, ideas, other persons, any things, any relationships

into ultimate’s or gods. Married and unmarried, all humans, long for completion so

deeply that we all can drift toward grasping greedily anyone or anything which will

do as a substitute. What Jesus is saying is that this present life leads to the

beyond and not to itself.

It does seem to me, a single person, that those who are married can come so

close to completion. That it's through that sharing, that intimacy can make the

longing all the more intense for the ultimate or total completion. Married persons’

reveal to each other how they are not a god, but mutual invitations to keep heading

toward the beyond, toward the real completion, toward the real and eternal God.

Living this way leads to the resurrected life which Jesus came to offer.

Our universal problem is that we all want the final completion of the here-after

to be experienced in the here-before.

AÑO DE MISERICORDIA

REFLEXION DEL EVANGELIO

¿Cómo será esta vida con Dios? Este es el interrogante que es necesario responder con mucha circunspección porque está siempre el peligro de proyectar al más allá—como hacían los fariseos y los saduceos—lo que de positivo experimentamos aquí, multiplicado al infinito: alegría placer, satisfacción y—sostenían los rabinos—hasta el retorno a la vida conyugal. Detrás de ciertas afirmaciones, ciertas oraciones, ciertos interrogantes de muchos cristianos de hoy se

percibe todavía, por desgracia, un concepto de la “resurrección de los muertos” similar a la de los fariseos. La resurrección de la cual habla Jesús—aquella que compara al hombre a los “ángeles de

Dios”—es completamente diversa. Para Jesús, el hombre vive sobre la tierra una gestación, se prepara para un nuevo nacimiento después del cual no habrá otro, porque el mundo en el que entrará será definitivo. Allí no estará presente ninguna forma de muerte. Como el bebé en el seno de su madre no puede figurarse el mundo que le espera, así el hombre no

puede vislumbrar cómo será la vida con Dios. Es un misterio que no ha sido revelado, no porque el Señor quiere aumentar el suspenso y la sorpresa, sino simplemente porque nuestra mente no está capacitada para entenderlo: “el cuerpo mortal es un peso para el alma y la tienda terrestre abruma la mente que reflexiona. A duras penas adivinamos lo que hay en la tierra y con trabajo encontramos lo que está a nuestro alcance: ¿quién podrá rastrear las cosas del cielo” (Sab 9,15-16). Podemos asomarnos a esta realidad sublime e inefable solamente mediante la fe, creyendo que “como

está escrito: Ningún ojo vio, ni oído oyó, ni mente humana concibió, lo que Dios preparó para quienes lo aman” (1 Cor 2,9). En vez de indagar aquello que no estamos en disposición de entender, es mejor afirmarse sobre la certeza que la resurrección de Cristo ofrece: en particular el hecho que no existen dos vidas—la presente y la futura—sino una única vida que continúa bajo dos formas completamente diferente.

La muerte—entendida como aniquilación de la persona—no existe, ha sido vencida, destruida por la muerte y resurrección de Cristo. Lo que llamamos muerte es simplemente el abandono de la forma de vida—débil, frágil, caduca—que llevamos en este mundo para ser recibidos en el mundo de Dios.

El cuerpo mortal que se enferma, se desvanece, envejece y camina hacia la disolución no se introduce en el mundo definitivo, permanece en este mundo: la persona se reviste de otro cuerpo “incorruptible, glorioso, lleno de fuerza, espiritual” (1 Cor 15,42-43). Con nuestra oración expresamos a las personas que nos han precedido a la casa del Padre, que nos hace felices saber que están con Dios, aunque continúa vivo el dolor por su partida. Les decimos que recordamos solamente el bien que han hecho, sus gestos de amor, su generosidad, la ayuda que han

prestado. Sus defectos, errores, debilidades han sido totalmente purificados por el encuentro con el “fuego” del amor de Dios. No queda en ellos ninguna forma de mal ni de muerte.
