Say Cheese!

•Kids love gadgets, so why not use them in the classroom?•Cameras can be used to gather evidence in scientific experiments•Some project ideas include collecting insects/plants/rocks, documenting seasons, recording group progress, or describing stages of cycles•Using cameras helps with scientific methods and improving familiarity with emerging technology available

What should you consider when selecting a camera?

•Battery Life•Megapixels•Zoom Features•Memory•Functions•Size•Connectivity•Warranty

Make sure you do your research on digital cameras and digital photography to select the right option for your classroom!

Digital Appreciation

Personally, I feel that using a digital camera puts a modern twist on methods to collecting and organizing data

Scientific data collection can occur in a more professional and streamlined manner with cameras

Photographs aid in documenting subjects and processes and in presenting those results

Pondering Technology

•The definition of technology extends beyond computer use

•Technology weaves within the fabric of our everyday lives

• To attempt a static definition of technology is difficult because it defies the very dynamic nature of technology

•It encompasses much of what we do throughout the day without our even realizing it

•Technology seems to be changing all the time

Technology’s Reach

Personally I define technology as anything that makes life easier, more efficient, faster, more accurate; it provides the possibility for improving life. It extends to involve ideas, tools, and machines that aid in performances, activities, routines, procedures, methods.  Technology is the process that identifies a need in society and offers an innovative solution, all the while attempting to improve upon the solution they just offered.  It is constantly being reshaped while reshaping how we live our daily lives.

Technology is Essential in Today’s Classroom

“If students are to understand science and society, how can we avoid technology in the classroom?” (Ohana, 2006, 6).

Technology is an integral part to both the teaching and learning processes. The only lingering question about technology is not about whether or not to use it, but how to use it appropriately so it may best serve teacher and student. With proper knowledge and preparation, it can greatly enhance the classroom experience.

Webbing through Science History

•The internet has changed the face of science

•Technology is being used for virtual experiments, data logging, and for new research purposes

•But, it has also changed the nature of the teacher

Virtual Learning for Teachers

With technology, teachers must be able to:

•Adapt curriculum to make the best use of new technologies available•Assist students in learning to use new means of technology available to them•Highlight natural connections being made between subjects, which is being made more accessible through technology

Conclusion

The impact of technology extends into multiple areas of curriculum, including science education.  In this way, technology serves as an integrator between multiple subjects, and raises a heightened awareness for those who learn about its benefits.  Technology has the ability to encompasses multiple modes for learning and serves as a forum where interdisciplinary links can meet to incorporate themes and build upon the bases established by one another.  As a teacher, you can encourage students to individually and collectively integrate their technological knowledge into a rich and comprehensive educational experience.
