Sustainability Integration into ICT Planning and Design

ICT Sustainability refers to environmentally sustainable computing. It is a combination of cost saving and being gentle on the environment with an anticipated result of reducing pollution and cost to the companies who are planning to integrate sustainability as part of the organisations restructure.

It reduces the use of hazardous materials, maximizes energy efficiency during the product's lifetime, and promotes the recyclability or biodegradability of defunct products and factory waste.

Schools can effectively design and implement a Green Printing Infrastructure project that will reduce costs and reduce the size of their carbon footprint.

Tips for Managing Printers and Reducing Printing Costs

One of the biggest recurring costs in operating a computer network is the cost of printer paper and toner. The key reducing printing costs is to reduce the use of these resources through effective management of printing resources and encouraging users to use them responsibly. It also helps our environment by saving trees.

The following slides outlines a number of tips that will help you manage printer costs.

Reduce Waste

One of the biggest recurring costs in operating a computer network is the cost of printer paper and toner. The key to reducing printing costs is to reduce the use of these resources through effective management of printing resources and encouraging users to use them responsibly. It also helps our environment by saving trees!

Allocate Print Quotas

By implementing print quotas on your network your users will use the printing resources efficiently. Users learn quickly if they cannot print once they have used their entire print quota. Your users become more thoughtful about printing and are encouraged to only print what they really need. Schools or universities often implement a print quota system to minimise printing costs.

Reduce Printer Hardware Costs

When your printers become too busy you may need to purchase or upgrade printers to meet the demand. This ends up costing more in both hardware costs and network administration time.

By reducing the amount of printing on your network, printers become less over-loaded, the print queues will be shorter, and users will not need to wait as long for print jobs to print. This will lessen the need to purchase new printers or upgrade existing printers. You may even find that you can even reduce the number of printers on your network.

Discourage the use of Colour Printing

Color printer and color toner is much more expensive than for black and white printing. You should encourage users to only print in color when they really need to. Often, users only need to print in color for their final draft. Working drafts only need to be printed in black and white. To discourage printing in color you should make printing to color printers more expensive to users, and/or reduce the cost of monochrome printing on color printers.

Preferred Printer Selection

Kyocera FS series Green Series Printers.

TEC(Typical Electricity Consumption) 30% Lower than most Competitors with same speed.

500,000 pages print drum (Up to 50 times longer than the competition).

Long life components ensures Kyocera printers have the lowest Cost Per Page in their class, important for large volume printing.

Results of above features ensure lower energy bill and lower CO2 emissions.
