Course overview

Introduction

The Introduction to Latin 2e Courseware is an essential online ancillary for Susan C. Shelmerdine’s

introductory Latin textbook, Introduction to Latin, Second Edition. The Courseware is designed to

reinforce the lessons in the textbook and the classroom, as well as allow students to work on their

own time and at their own pace, focus and improve on trouble areas, build confidence using Latin,

and expand on what they’ve learned.

Compatibility

Introduction to Latin 2e Courseware can be used on Windows 98 and higher, Mac OS X and higher,

and the iPad. Instructions on how to enter characters with macrons on all of these systems

(necessary for the Workbook exercises) is conveniently provided on every page of the Courseware

and included in the Student Course Guide.

Five components

The Courseware mirrors the structure of the textbook, with each chapter having up to five

components. A description of the five components follows:

1. Vocabulary. Vocabulary sections help students review, practice, and learn the chapter

vocabulary. Resources include audio recordings of the chapter vocabulary read by the author

(for first five chapters), Latin-English and English-Latin flashcards, a PDF printout of the chapter

vocabulary formatted so that students can cover up either the Latin or the English words and

practice translating, and an interactive online activity that requires students to fill in the missing

principle parts of the verbs learned in that chapter.

2. Readings. Reading sections aid student comprehension of the readings included in the textbook.

These sections include audio recordings of the texts in each chapter read by the author and her

colleagues at UNC-Greensboro. Students can listen to these audio recordings after first reading

the texts silently, to help appreciate spoken Latin and improve pronunciation. Many reading

sections also include pre-reading worksheets. These worksheets include exercises for students

to do before reading the texts, to prepare the student for reading the text and improve

comprehension.

3. Workbook. Workbook sections include all of the exercises from the Introduction to Latin 2e

Workbook by Ed DeHoratius, in online, auto-correcting formats. These innovative exercises help

students review and practice grammar learned in each chapter and build “reflexes” in the Latin

language. Exercise formats include fill-in-the-blank, matching, multiple choice, short-answer,

and more. Students can do these exercises after reading the chapter or learning the material in

class to practice what they’ve learned. They can also return to exercises from an earlier chapter

for a review, or in preparation for an exam.

When students complete an exercise, they are then immediately given a score, with their

correct answers marked in green with a checkmark, and their incorrect answers marked in red

with an “x”. If they place their cursor over an incorrect answer, the correct answer is shown. A

student can review his or her scores by viewing his or her gradebook (instructors can view a

whole class gradebook with every student’s scores). The exercises are programmed with the

default setting that allows students to try the exercises as many times as they wish, with only

the highest score being saved in the gradebook. [For more information on grading and exercise

settings, see Managing your course below.]

4. Additional Exercises. Some of the earlier chapters in the Courseware include a few additional

exercises in the same mold as the Workbook exercises, to be used in the same fashion. These

generally ask students to fill in the missing forms of a noun to practice a particular declension, or

a verb to practice a particular conjugation.

5. Enrichment Readings & Exercises. Once a student has mastered the chapter material, he or she

can move on to the Enrichment Readings & Exercises. These are a complementary set of

worksheets with unadapted Latin readings, supplemental notes, and review questions that help

students expand on what they learned in the chapter. Readings by prominent authors are

carefully chosen for illustrating grammar learned in the textbook, as well as for their cultural,

historical, and literary value. Exercises include translating school mottos. Instructors can assign

these at the completion of a chapter or as optional extra-credit.

The worksheets are in PDF form and must be reviewed/graded by an instructor. Students can

either print and complete the forms by hand, or complete them electronically and email them to

the instructor. For more information on using these worksheets, see Using Enrichment Readings

& Exercises Worksheets below.

Additional components

The Latin Alphabet & Pronunciation. The Courseware includes audio recordings of this entire

introductory chapter read aloud by Andrew Becker (Virginia Tech). These audio recordings are

very helpful for students because it allows them to actually hear the pronunciation rules and

lessons that can only be described with words in the text. These audio recordings can be

assigned with the reading of this introductory chapter, so students can listen along as they read.

eBookstore. A link is included to purchase the NookStudy eBook of Introduction to Latin 2e.

Read Introduction to Latin 2e NookStudy eBook. When students click on this link, their Intro to

Latin 2e NookStudy eBook will launch and open to chapter 1 with just a single click. If they have

not purchased the eBook, a link to do will be provided.

Student Q & A Forum. This is a convenient forum for students to post any questions they have

about Latin, and for students/instructors to respond.

Using Enrichment Readings & Exercises Worksheets

Completing the worksheets

The PDF worksheets are designed to be completed in two possible ways:

1. Worksheets can be printed and completed by hand.

2. Worksheets can be completed electronically, and then either printed or sent electronically to an

instructor or other desired recipient.

Directions for printing the worksheets as well as completing and sending them electronically are

included in the Student Course Guide. If the instructor wishes to assign these worksheets, he or she

should decide which of these two (or both) is an acceptable way for a student to submit them. The

following instructions explain how the instructor can accept, grade, and return worksheets

completed electronically.

Accepting, grading, and returning electronically submitted worksheets

Instructors can grade electronically submitted worksheets one of two ways:

Printing the Worksheets. The easiest way for instructors to grade a worksheet is to print it, grade it

by hand, and return to the student in person. To make sure the document prints with the student’s

answers, select Document and Markups from the dropdown list under Comments & Forms on the

print menu. Make sure the student’s answers are shown on the print preview window below.

Grading and Returning the Worksheets Electronically. Or, they can grade the worksheet

electronically, and return it to the student electronically. This section discusses how to grade and

return the worksheet electronically.

1. Review the Student Course Guide to make sure students understand the process and have

correctly marked-up and submitted the worksheets electronically.

2. You will need Adobe Reader XI to complete these steps. You can download this program for free

at: http://www.adobe.com/products/reader.html.

3. Open the submitted worksheet with Adobe Reader. Click on Comment to open the comment

pane.

6. Repeat steps 4 and 5, but switch green checkmark for red “X”. The green checkmark and red “X”

should now appear in your favorites list.

7. Select green checkmark from favorites list under Add Stamp. Your cursor should now be a green

checkmark. Place the checkmark next to correct answers.

An Important Note on Workbook Quizzes:

Macrons

Workbook exercises require students to enter macrons. Guides are provided on the course pages

showing students how to conveniently and easily enter macrons on all platforms, including iPads

(see screen-shot below). Answers without macrons will return a score of “incorrect.”

Manually grading activities

The online Introduction to Latin 2e Courseware includes all of the questions that are offered in the

print edition of the Workbook by Ed DeHoratius, including those that require short answer or free

response questions. All of these exercises, with a few exceptions, do not need to be graded by an

instructor because they are equipped with computer-generated feedback that identify correct and

incorrect answers and record the scores in the student gradebook.

The exceptions—there are only four—are exercises in which correct answers will vary from student

to student. These four exercises have been marked with an asterisk (*) to highlight to both the

students and instructors that these questions require or may require instructor review.

Instructions on how to review quiz attempts and manually adjust grades immediately follows.

Exporting your course’s gradebook to Excel

To export your course’s gradebook to an Excel spreadsheet, first open the gradebook by clicking the

“Grades” link in the “Settings” section of the right sidebar on your course page.

From the “Choose an action…” dropdown menu in the top-left corner of the gradebook, choose

“Excel spreadsheet” under the “Export” header.

From this page, you can modify what will actually be exported:

“Include feedback in export” will put any feedback you provided your students on the uploading assignments into the spreadsheet.

“Preview rows” sets the number of rows you will see on the preview of your exported sheet; it does not affect the end file, but can help you judge how the spreadsheet will look.

“Grade export display type” allows you to choose whether you want to export your students’ grades as numerical values (“Real”), percentages, or letter grades (e.g., a percentage grade of 95 gets exported as an “A”).

“Grade export decimal points” lets you choose the number of digits past the decimal of each grade that you want reported in the export.

Page 15 of 21 – Introduction to Latin 2e

© 2013 Focus Publishing/R. Pullins Co. Updated 5/27/2013

Finally, “Grade items to be included” lets you choose which assignments’ grades are actually exported. By default, all of them are, but you can remove some so that, for example, only one chapter’s grades are exported.

Once you have chosen your export options, scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Submit.” The

next page will provide you with a preview of what the Excel spreadsheet will look like. If you are

satisfied, click the “Download” button to retrieve your exported gradebook.

Policies

Modification Policy

You are welcome to add new resources and materials to your course page, but please do not edit or

change any of the materials that come with your course page. If you accidentally or purposefully

change any of the materials that come with your course page and need them to be repaired, you

will be charged a fee of $65.00 per hour for the repairs.

Focus Publishing will not be able to train you in how to use Moodle. However, there is a link to the

Moodle website at the bottom of your course page.

There are also links to contextual pop-up help pages in all of the editing pages.

End-of-Term Course Administration Policy

At the end of your purchased term (usually a maximum of 15 months from when you purchased

your course), if your course is still available (not replaced with a newer edition) and you want to

renew your course, the site administrator will remove all of the student data from it to prepare it for

the next school year. To save your course’s grades, see the instructions for exporting the gradebook

to an Excel spreadsheet above. If you will need extra time to save your grades, make sure that you

e-mail the site administrator at [email protected]; otherwise, the grades will be removed with

the rest of the student data.

If there is a new version of the course available when you renew, you will be supplied with a clean

copy of it. Otherwise, you will be allowed to keep your original course page, including any

modifications that you have made to it.

Can I set due dates on quizzes/HotPot activities?

Quiz: In the quiz settings, enable the “Close the quiz” category and select the appropriate due date.

HotPot: In the hotpot settings, enable the “Available until” feature and select the appropriate date. (This category is an advanced option. Click “show advanced” if it is not displayed.)

To display the due date on the entry page for the HotPot activity, select “show entry page” and turn on “dates” under HotPot settings.

What feedback do students receive when they take a quiz? Can I change the feedback they receive?

The default setting is generally “deferred feedback,” in which the student completes the entire exercise, submits it, and then receives a score, a detailed report of what answers were correct and incorrect, and what the correct answers responses should have been. In the uncommon instance that there are multiple exercises per quiz, the adaptive mode or immediate feedback mode can be chosen to give feedback on individual exercises as they are completed. Select “manually graded” to manually grade the quiz.
