Part 1: Get the necessary software To run Windows 10 on your Mac, you will need to start by logging in to On The Hub to order, download,

and get license keys for both VMware Fusion and Windows 10.

1. Log into Bentley’s On the Hub portal using your Bentley email address and password.

2. Search for “VMware Fusion” and when it appears, select “Add to Cart”:

3. Purchasing Windows 10 will require a couple additional steps.

a. Search for Windows 10 and when it appears, select “Add to Cart”:

b. At the additional features shopping pane that opens, it is not necessary to add Extended

Access if you save your license key in a text file for later use, you will not need Norton if

you use Microsoft’s built-in antivirus, and Parallels Desktop for Mac is unnecessary

because you have already ordered a free copy of VMware Fusion.

Skip directly to “Check Out”:

Part 4: Resolving Errors and Making Changes

There are a lot of little steps involved with installing VMware Fusion and setting up a Windows 10

virtual machine. This section includes instructions for resolving common errors and making changes

to the default virtual machine configuration.

• ERROR MESSAGE: “Could not open /dev/vmmon: Broken pipe” ........................................ p21

• INSTRUCTIONS: Change virtual machine settings to improve performance ....................... p23

• INSTRUCTIONS: Detach Windows 10 ISO after Windows 10 has been installed ................. p27

Updated May 2019 by Bentley University Client Services. 21

ERROR MESSAGE: “Could not open /dev/vmmon: Broken pipe.”

RESOLUTION: This message looks terrifying, but generally indicates that VMware Fusion is unable to

access something on your system.

To resolve this issue:

1. Restart the computer (making sure it restarts and doesn’t simply sleep and wake up):

NOTE: You may need to close some applications, including VMware Fusion, to restart your Mac.

To completely close an application in macOS, click on the name of the Program (with the

application open, this will be to the right of the Apple symbol in the top left of the screen), and

select Quit from the very bottom of the drop-down menu.

2. After rebooting, you should receive the following message (if you do not receive this message

immediately, reopen VMware Fusion and try to launch your virtual machine again):

Page 22: Instructions for Creating a Windows 10 Virtual Machine on ...d2f5upgbvkx8pz.cloudfront.net/sites/default/files/inline-files/Create... · Part 3: Create a Windows 10 virtual machine

Updated May 2019 by Bentley University Client Services. 22

3. Follow the prompt to Open Security Preferences.

4. Click the box to “Allow” VMware Fusion to load:

Page 23: Instructions for Creating a Windows 10 Virtual Machine on ...d2f5upgbvkx8pz.cloudfront.net/sites/default/files/inline-files/Create... · Part 3: Create a Windows 10 virtual machine

Updated May 2019 by Bentley University Client Services. 23

INSTRUCTIONS: Change virtual machine settings to improve performance.

The VMware Fusion virtual machine setup wizard creates virtual machines with a default hard drive size

of 60 GB and memory (RAM) of 2 GB, but you may find that the machine runs better with a little more

RAM and depending on the size of the files you will be working with, you may want to add more hard

drive space.

Bentley IT recommends at least 4 GB for your virtual machine, but while your virtual machine is running,

it will take whatever RAM you assign to it from your physical machine. If your physical machine has 4 GB

and you give all 4 GB to your virtual machine, you may run into performance issues on both machines. If

your physical machine has 8 GB RAM, giving your virtual machine 4 GB will leave your physical machine

with 4 GB (note that when the virtual machine is powered off, this RAM is no longer being used by the

virtual machine so it will be available to your physical machine). For the best performance, IT

recommends powering off your virtual machine when you aren’t using it.

To change the settings for your virtual machine:

1. Shut down your virtual machine.

a. You can do this either through the Windows 10 Start Menu within the virtual machine,

or through VMware Fusion by selecting “Virtual Machine” and “Shut Down” from the

drop-down menu:

b. When prompted, confirm that you would like to proceed by clicking “Shut Down”:

Page 24: Instructions for Creating a Windows 10 Virtual Machine on ...d2f5upgbvkx8pz.cloudfront.net/sites/default/files/inline-files/Create... · Part 3: Create a Windows 10 virtual machine

Updated May 2019 by Bentley University Client Services. 24

2. Once the machine has shut down completely, click on the settings icon (the little wrench icon)

on the top of the virtual machine pane:

3. From the virtual machine’s Settings, if you’d like to add or remove memory (RAM) from your

virtual machine, choose “Processor & Memory”:

Page 25: Instructions for Creating a Windows 10 Virtual Machine on ...d2f5upgbvkx8pz.cloudfront.net/sites/default/files/inline-files/Create... · Part 3: Create a Windows 10 virtual machine

Updated May 2019 by Bentley University Client Services. 25

4. The slider will be the default 2GB, and the checkmark below it shows how much memory is left

for your physical computer. To adjust the memory (RAM) on the virtual machine, simple move

the slider to the left or right. 1 GB RAM is equal to 1024 MB, so 2 GB = 2048 MB and 4 GB = 4096

MB, etc.

5. When you have selected the amount of memory you’d like to assign to your virtual machine,

you can either click on “Show All” to view and change other settings (hard drive space changes

will be shown next), or close the “Processors & Memory”:

Page 26: Instructions for Creating a Windows 10 Virtual Machine on ...d2f5upgbvkx8pz.cloudfront.net/sites/default/files/inline-files/Create... · Part 3: Create a Windows 10 virtual machine

Updated May 2019 by Bentley University Client Services. 26

6. To make changes to your virtual machine’s hard drive space, choose “Hard Disk (SCSI)” from the

virtual machines Settings pane:

7. Grab and move the slider to the left or right to change the size of the hard disk. Remember to

leave plenty of disk space for your physical machine:

8. Once your hard disk is set to the size you’d like, click “Apply.”

9. You will be prompted to wait until the setting change has finished:

Once you are returned to the Settings panel, your changes are complete and you can close Settings and

power on your adjusted virtual machine.

INSTRUCTIONS: Detach Windows 10 ISO from VM after Windows 10 has been installed.

The Windows 10 ISO file that was dropped into the VMware Fusion virtual machine wizard was for

installing Windows 10 on your virtual machine (much like putting a Windows installation DVD into the

CD/DVD drive). Once Windows 10 has been successfully installed, the ISO can be removed from your

virtual machine (if you do not remove it, you may receive prompts asking if you still need it).

To remove the ISO from your virtual machine:

2. Once the machine has shut down completely, click on the settings icon (the little wrench icon)

on the top of the virtual machine pane:

3. From the virtual machine’s Settings, choose “CD/DVD (SATA)”:

4. Remove the check from the box to “Connect CD/DVD Drive”:

5. Close the virtual machine CD/DVD (SATA) settings pane:
