Targeted as aspiring CIP graduates, these early pioneers began their Fellowship journey three years ago, when the new program was launched in September 2010. Since then, they’ve completed the new program’s curriculum, which examines important business topics and adapts them to the P&C business. Specifically, the program is made up of five courses tailored to the industry—Strategy, Leadership, Finance, Enterprise Risk Management, and Emerging Issues—as well as a workplace project paper that students develop in partnership with their employers. Our group of 2014 FCIP graduates is made up of underwriters, adjusters, supervisors, and managers, underscoring how the program’s broad application is right for any ambitious industry professional looking to make a move up the career ladder into more senior roles. All of them speak highly of the knowledge gained from the program, knowledge that they say is directly applicable to their job. If you’re a CIP graduate looking for your next career move, then before you head off on your summer vacation, I’d encourage you to follow in our graduates’ footsteps and register for the Fellowship Program by visiting us at www.insuranceinstitute.ca. Regional Meetings: The Institute “Web Servers”

As an association run by its members, the Institute can be thought of like an “Internet”in which information constantly flows between local and provincial institutes and thenational Institute; between members and their elected representatives. One vital“server” in this network for communication between institutes is the regional meeting.Every year, at regional meetings across the country, the directors of local institutesmeet with each other and with The Insurance Institute of Canada to discuss issues oflocal, regional, and national concern. These meetings are candid forums where yourneeds as students and members are discussed, opportunities for cooperationbetween institutes are explored, and issues of national interest are examined.

This year, the Western regional meeting was held in Regina May 1 and chaired byGlenda Ouellette, BA, MBA, FCIP, Regional Vice Chair. The Quebec regional meetingwas held in Montreal March 21 and chaired by François Côté, FPAA, CRM, RegionalVice Chair. The Atlantic regional meeting was held in Halifax May 8 and chaired byDarrel Coates, CIP, CRM, Regional Vice Chair.

You are a dedicated insuranceprofessional. You have polished technicalskills, refined through years of experiencein Canada’s property and casualtyindustry. You have valuable ideas thatyou feel will benefit your organizationand the industry as a whole.

How do you expand your horizons?

“The FCIP Program is geared towardspeople who want to take the next stepin their development, especially thosewho want to become leaders,” said JoeyDeschambault, one of 13 FCIP candidateswho recently finished their course work inthe online program. “The FCIP Programreally gears the courses around decisionsthat leaders make in the workplace.”

The Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional(FCIP) Program was developed by theInsurance Institute in collaboration withsenior industry executives and respectedacademics from several of Canada’srespected business schools.

Redesigned in 2010, the online programcovers several core aspects of thebusiness: strategy, leadership, financial

management, enterprise riskmanagement, and emerging issues. Inthe final “capstone” course, candidatesapply the knowledge and skills that theyhave gained throughout the program tocreate practical solutions to real-worldissues facing insurance companies.

“It’s definitely worth it if you want tolearn more about the insurance industry,”Calgary FCIP candidate Vinh Ho said ofthe program. “I have a more of an in-depthindustry view, with more of a businesseducation as well.”

Thirteen FCIP candidates, 12 from acrossCanada and one from the Bahamas, recently finished the program coursework. In the second course, F520: Leadingin the Insurance World, candidates learnhow to make the most of their leadershipqualities regardless of their role orfunction within a p&c organization.

Several FCIP candidates who finishedtheir coursework said they came out ofthe leadership course transformed.

“A quote was used in the leadershipcourse that said ‘You don’t have to be ina leadership position to be a leader,’” said

FCIP candidate Julie Chipp-Smith of Ajax,Ontario. “That just hit me hard. I appliedthat to myself: I don’t have to be in amanagement position to lead or to beperceived by my colleagues as a leader.”

Bahamas FCIP candidate Cindy Carroll similarlycame out of the course with a changedperspective. “It changed my view aboutleadership, in that management andleadership are two totally differentthings,” she said. “You can manage all daylong, but leading is inspiring. And in thatcourse, I learned the type of leader that I wantto be. Wherever I’m at, I want to be aninspiration to others.”

Are you ready to join the leadershipdiscussion in the FCIP Program?

The FCIP Self-Assessment Quiz, a briefonline quiz consisting of eight questions, can help determine if you are ready totake the FCIP Program at this stage ofyour career. The quiz is available atwww.insuranceinstitute.ca/AreYouReady.

New Institute Program Supports Industry Recruitment

The Insurance Institute has created anew, standalone P&C Insurance EssentialsProgram to educate new boardmembers and executives who have beenrecruited from outside the property andcasualty (p&c) insurance industry.

“The Insurance Institute’s new programsupports a company’s recruiting efforts,” saidTino Corsetti, Senior Director, AcademicPrograms and Product Development at theInsurance Institute. “Companies canconfidently expand their search for boardroomand executive talent beyond the insuranceindustry, because a resource is available tohelp orient their new recruits into the p&cbusiness quickly.

“As Canada’s solvency regulator makesclear, seeking professional developmentopportunities for board members andexecutives is a sign of good corporategovernance.”

At the heart of the P&C InsuranceEssentials Program is a workshop focusedon senior-level fundamental p&cinsurance concepts. Workshop topicsinclude foundational insurance concepts;the p&c industry’s regulatory framework;distribution; underwriting and rating;claims; and capital and capacity.

The one-day program illustrates theseconcepts using practical examples drawnfrom a business case. A comprehensivecase-study session follows the workshop.A final, optional component of theprogram is a panel discussion on today’schallenges and tomorrow’s emergingtrends, featuring experts from insurancecompanies and across the country.

P&C Insurance Essentials can be tailored tomeet the needs of a wide variety ofcompany board structures—public, mutual,or co-operative models—as well as anumber of different p&c experience levels.

The program evolved from the Institute’scollaboration with The Co-operators inthe delivery of the company’s DirectorDevelopment Program (DDP).

The Co-operators’s board is composed ofelected directors from co-operatives

across Canada. “A lot of them come witha fair bit of financial acumen, but they’renot from insurance and that is thespecific issue that we wanted to address,”said Richard Lemoing, chair of the boardat The Co-operators.

The Co-operators built its DDP programto address a number of competenciesrelated to governance oversight of aninsurance or financial servicesorganization. A director is expected tocomplete the DDP program during athree-year term.

The Co-operators delivered its Knowledgeof the Business p&c insurance module inlate 2013, working in partnership with theInsurance Institute.

P&C Insurance Essentials can be adaptedto the needs of any p&c insurancecompany. It can benefit the managers orstaff of financial services organizationsthat offer p&c insurance products as partof their business.

P&C Insurance: Essentials for Executives isparticularly well-suited to the perspectiveof executives who propose andrecommend insurance-related optionsfor the company. A case study, forexample, calls for participants to considerand discuss insurance-related tacticaloptions that might be proposed to theboard of directors.

For more details about P&C InsuranceEssentials, visit our website atwww.insuranceinstitute.ca.

The Ambassador Program: We Need You!

One of the strategies for promotingcareers in insurance is to dispel some ofthe misperceptions about the type ofpeople who work in insurance. One ofthe ways we do that is by recruiting andtraining industry professionals to be theface of the industry and to talk abouttheir careers in insurance to youth andcareer seekers. These “spokespeople”speak on behalf of the industry and helpintroduce insurance careers to manywho don’t know about the potential andhaven’t explored the possibilities.

As an ambassador, you will be expectedto attend a one-hour orientation

webinar, participate in a four-hourtraining session (the next sessions are inAugust and September), and commit togiving two or more classroom

presentations at the high school leveland to participating in two or moresecondary or post-secondary careerevents during the school year, fromSeptember to June.

If you are good at giving presentationsand enthusiastic about your career ininsurance, why not spend some time as aspokesperson—an ambassador for yourindustry! To find out more or to sign upas an ambassador, please check out theCareer Connections website atwww.career-connections.info.

Historically, Greek symposiums dating back tolate sixth century BCE were centres fordiscussion of traditional values, as well as topicssuch as philosophy, politics, poetry, and theissues of the day.

The CIP Society’s Symposium, the industry’spremier event for insurance professionals, recently made history of its own, havingreached its 10th anniversary this past April. This year’s event focused on the future, addressing some of the industry challenges

of tomorrow, including extreme weather, data management, and reliance on powerand technology.

In traditional symposium style, this annualevent provides attendees a rareopportunity to share ideas, explore trends, and examine the impact of economic, environmental, and political change.

With a total of 200 in attendance, includingregistered attendees, speakers, FCIP

candidates and leadership award winners, media, volunteers, and staff, this anniversaryevent was greeted with a great response.

One attendee’s testimonial sums up the dayby declaring, “it [the Symposium] was thebest one I’ve attended, with great topicsthat are on everyone’s top list of challenges. The high calibre of speakers was key.”

Highlights of the day included the newlyformatted “Up Close and Personal”sessions, which saw four industry leadersmove between rooms to discuss hottopics in today’s industry in a moreintimate setting.

Thanks to all our members who joined usand participated in this very special day ofnetworking and professional development. We look forward to bringing you anotherexciting event in 2015.

Career Connections: The Gateway to Insurance Careers for 10 Years

Since 2003, Career Connections has taken thelead in promoting awareness about therewarding and varied careers available ininsurance. During those 10 years, we haveworked to increase the pool of interested, talented, and informed candidates available tomeet the growing recruitment needs of our industry.

We have also seen the focus of CareerConnections programming widen fromhigh school students to also includebroader outreach to post-secondarystudents and career changers—essentially, anyone not alreadyconnected to an insurance career!

As our 10th campaign season draws to aclose, Career Connections will haveparticipated in over 375 events! Thatworks out to over 10 events a week (morethan two per day) over a nine-monthperiod! These numbers suggest that theprogram’s reach was one of its greatestever, with over 125,000 secondarystudents, 77,000 post-secondary students, and 7,000 career changers andinternationally trained professionalshaving the opportunity to engage CareerConnections messaging at career fairs, inthe classroom, and at special events.

In keeping with the program’s strategicobjectives, over one third of allprogramming is insurance-specific (paneldiscussions, industry networking events, and insurance career fairs).

Those numbers don’t include the threemillion potential readers of an articlefocused on “Skills for Success in YourInsurance Career” that was published inMetro magazine as a part of Insurance Week(April 20–27) on TalentEgg.ca (one of theprogram’s media partners).

Nor do those numbers include over130,000 career influencers whom CareerConnections engaged at conferencesand events and through advertising. Thisaudience includes teachers, careeradvisors, counsellors, and co-operativeeducation professionals.

The Career Connections website also sawcontinued growth in its traffic—up from

over 4000 to well over 8000 unique visitsper month throughout the course of thecampaign season. And, the program’spresence in the social media sphere hasalso seen steady growth:

YouTube: Over 31,000 career seekershave watched the careervideos on the CareerConnections Channel.

Facebook: Over 1600 like CareerConnections on Facebook.

Career Quiz: Over 7000 career seekers have taken the quiz so farthis campaign season.

Twitter: Over 165 followers to date

Overall, this campaign has been a gooddemonstration of the ever-evolvingscope and reach of the program!

And… all signs seem to be that it’s working! The success of Career Connections’outreach and employers’ hiring is reflectedin the Insurance Institute’s demographicresearch studies that demonstratesignificant increase in recruitment acrossthe industry since 2007.

Career Connections also attributessuccess to consistently rising levels ofindustry engagement in a number of keyprogram areas:

    • Over 380 industry professionals arecurrently on the Ambassador roster;they participate in career fairs and panel

discussions and attend networkingevents on behalf of Career Connections.

    • Human resource professionals andhiring managers in Toronto, Conestoga,Calgary, Vancouver, and Edmontonhave participated in roundtableconversations focused on recruitmentand retention issues.

    • Over 40 industry employers took partin insurance-specific career fairs, paneldiscussions, and networking events oncampuses and in key industry centresacross the country!

This is all a good-news story for CareerConnections and the industry, but thesearch for motivated people continues.Significant retirements are still tocome—as much as 28% of the industry’swork force could be retiring in the nextfive to ten years. Competition for talentwithin a smaller youth pool means theindustry will need to continue todiversify its recruitment efforts. And,retaining both existing and matureemployees is more vital than ever.

Talent, like technology, will revolutionize theworkforce over the next 10 years. CareerConnections is ready to bring responsivenessand creativity to the ongoing conversation, development of innovative new tools, andwork with the insurance industry to meet theneeds of tomorrow’s workforce!

    New Graduates, New TalentHello everyone:

I’m thrilled to share with you that theInstitute’s Executive Committee has justelected the first group of graduates of thenew FCIP Program. Targeted as aspiring CIPgraduates, these early pioneers began theirFellowship journey three years ago, whenthe new program was launched inSeptember 2010.

Since then, they’ve completed the newprogram’s curriculum, which examinesimportant business topics and adapts themto the P&C business. Specifically, theprogram is made up of five courses tailoredto the industry—Strategy, Leadership,Finance, Enterprise Risk Management, and

Emerging Issues—as well as a workplaceproject paper that students develop inpartnership with their employers.

Our group of 2014 FCIP graduates is madeup of underwriters, adjusters, supervisors, and managers, underscoring how theprogram’s broad application is right for anyambitious industry professional looking tomake a move up the career ladder intomore senior roles. All of them speak highlyof the knowledge gained from the program, knowledge that they say is directlyapplicable to their job.

If you’re a CIP graduate looking for yournext career move, then before you head offon your summer vacation, I’d encourageyou to follow in our graduates’ footstepsand register for the Fellowship Program byvisiting us at www.insuranceinstitute.ca. Focus on New Talent

As you’ve heard me say before, attracting theright talent is an imperative for our industry;the Institute’s demographic studies tell us thata number of boomer-aged workers will beretiring in the coming years, leavingemployment gaps we want to be ready to fill.

In addition, the insurance business isbecoming more complex, stronger financialperformance is expected, severe weatherevents are becoming more frequent, andinvesting in technology is increasinglyimportant to our ability to meet ourcustomers’ growing expectations.
