4 Product description

Solar Drainback EN7662865 - v07 - 20102017

4 Description of the product

4.1 Description of the product

The Solar Drainback system is a compact unit providing protection against overheating. Conventional installations are prone to overheating which can shorten their service life and require intervention from maintenance engineers. With Drainback systems, solar installations with a large surface area are fully protected against this issue.Solar Drainback systems offer the following advantages:• Passive safety to protect against overheating. This means that the

solar system is protected under all circumstances, including in the event of a power supply fault.

• A wide range covering the vast majority of solar energy installations.• A manometric head of up to 35 m, depending on the model, which

covers the majority of building heights.• Guaranteed protection against overpressure as, on expansion, the

heat transfer fluid is absorbed by the air contained in the installation itself.

• Installation time is minimised as the system is supplied fully assembled and configured.

• Easy to use, the Drainback system needs no expansion vessels, air bleed valves, heat sinks (air heaters), 3-way valves or air separators.

• Reduced maintenance costs. The heat transfer fluid does not degrade, there are fewer components to check and the system constantly operates at low pressure: all these factors dramatically reduce preventive and corrective maintenance costs.

• Better adaptability to the uses of the installation. In buildings which have varying patterns of use, (e.g. schools, hotels, sports centres), the Drainback system is always available to meet the demand, while remaining in hibernation mode when it is not needed.

Premium units (DB50, DB100 and DB150) offer the following additional functions:• Energy meter used to measure energy savings.• Solar control box equipped with the VBus protocol enabling

connection to the building management software for remote monitoring of the operation of the installation.

• Heat exchanger for the built-in domestic hot water tank.• High-efficiency pack enabling the solar pump flow rate to be adapted

to the demand.

4.2 Operating principle

The operating principle is as follows:1 When idle, the solar panels remain empty, and the heat transfer fluid

is stored inside the Drainback unit.

2 When there is a demand and the sun is shining, the solar circuit pump starts up, transferring the heat transfer fluid to the panels.

3 Once the demand is satisfied, the pump stops and the heat transfer fluid returns to the Drainback unit owing to the effect of gravity. In this way, although there is still solar radiation, there is no vapour formed and the antifreeze is not degraded.

5.3 Design of the installation

5.3.1 Location dimensions

Decide on the ideal position for the installation, taking into account the legal provisions and the requirements in terms of space for the appliance. Allow sufficient space around the Drainback system to ensure adequate access to the appliance and enable any and all maintenance operations to be carried out.The dimensions shown in the figure should be used as a guideline.

5.3.2 Accumulator location

The distance between the upper connection on the collectors and the accumulator must be between 2 and 25 m, depending on the model.

Solar DrainbackEN7662865 - v07 - 20102017

5.3.3 Minimum incline

To ensure the correct operation of the Drainback system, the routing of the connection pipes between the solar collectors and the Solar Drainback system must not include any kind of siphon or rising gradient, as this would impede this system from draining.

CautionThe horizontal sections of piping must have a minimum incline of 3º to enable the installation to drain. However, greater inclines are recommended, where possible.

It is important not to oversize the connection pipes as this would produce excess fluid in the installation. Similarly, it is essential to check that the pipes do not create an excessive pressure drop as this would reduce the manometric capacity of the installation and could even impair its operation.

Related informationPipe diameter calculation, page 30.

In DB40S systems, the solar accumulator coil inlet must be below the Drainback vessel outlet, where possible. An air vent device must be fitted at the highest connection point. The air vent must be able to be isolated. After filling, the section A-B will be completely drained. Any air pockets remaining in this piping will affect the correct operation of the pump.

5.3.4 Balancing valves

The balancing valves are used to regulate the flow circulating in each of the collector coils. For those installations where it is not possible to create an inverted return, it is recommended to use balancing valves to balance the flows circulating through each row of collectors.Where possible, it is recommended to design the rows of collectors minimising the number of collectors to ensure balance.

CautionThe flow rates on each row must be regulated to ensure a constant flow rate (15-60 l/h·m2) for each collector.

CautionWe must ensure that the theoretical volume of the installation is less than the storage volume of the tank to guarantee that the unit can store the entire volume of the installation. If the volume of the installation is greater than the volume of the tank, the installation's drainpipes will have to be used to store the excess fluid.

Solar DrainbackEN7662865 - v07 - 20102017

■ Installation example

We have an installation with 35 SOL250 solar collectors, i.e. the total solar capture surface area is 87.5 m2 and the collector field volume is 80.5 L.Solar capture surface area:Scap = 35 x 2.5 m2 = 87.5 m2

Collectorfieldvolume:Vcap=35 x 2.3 L = 80.5 L

If the total height is 20 m, with a horizontal distribution section measuring 50 m, in total, there will be 90 m of pipework with an interior diameter of 32 mm. This length of piping corresponds to a total volume of 72 L.Pipework volume:LP=20+20+50=90 m pipingVP=90 m·0.8 L/m=72 L

These 72 L are added to the 80.5 L from the collector field, to obtain a theoretical volume of 152.5 L in total for the installation.Total theoretical volume:VT=Vcap+VP=72 L+80.5 L=152.5 L

Taking a 20% safety margin, the total required volume of the Drainback to store the entire volume necessary for the installation is 183 LVolume of Drainback unit:VDB=VT·1.2=152.5 L·1.2=183 L

In this case, a DB150 system with a tank with a capacity of 200 L must be used, this ensures that the total volume of fluid in the installation is stored inside the tank of the DB150 system.

5.3.8 Quantity of antifreeze

BAXI heat transfer fluid can be used to fill the installation, in the correct concentration for the minimum foreseeable outdoor temperature in the location. If it can be guaranteed that the fluid in the installation will always be stored in the tank, the glycol concentration can be reduced; otherwise, it is recommended to use a mix of water and glycol in the following proportions:

Tab. 8 Concentration of heat transfer fluid

Volume of heat transfer fluid 26% 33% 37%

Minimum outdoor temperature -10 ºC -15 ºC -20 ºC

CautionUnder no circumstances should the mixture of water and glycol exceed 40%.

WarningAlthough it is non-toxic, odourless and biodegradable, it is appropriate to take precautions when handling the product. You are recommended to use gloves which are resistant to chemical products and to wear suitable eye protection when handling the product.

WarningIf the fluid comes into contact with your skin, wash it with soap and water. If it comes into contact with your eyes, wash them immediately with plenty of clean running water.

6 Installation

6.1 General

The following observations must be taken into account for a Solar Drainback installation:• Once all the hydraulic connections have been completed, check the

sealing of the entire circuit.• It is helpful to protect the collectors from the potential effects of

solar radiation once the packaging has been removed, until the installation has been filled.

• If there is no demand, or it is anticipated that there will be long periods without any DHW being extracted, it is recommended to protect the system using thermal blankets.

• Once all the connections on the solar control box sensors have been completed, it is important to check that these do not run across other electrical cables as this could generate interference and alter the readout values.

• It is recommended to use a shielded cable for the sensor connections.

10 Maintenance

Solar DrainbackEN7662865 - v07 - 20102017

10 Maintenance

10.1 General

CautionMaintenance work must be carried out by a qualified professional.

CautionFailure to service the system will void the warranty.

CautionUse only genuine spare parts.

DangerDepending on the fluid temperature and the system pressure, if the vent screw is completely loosened hot liquid or gas can escape or even shoot out at high pressure. Beware of scaling.

DangerDepending on the operating conditions of the pump or installation (fluid temperature), the entire pump may be come very hot. Avoid touching the pipe owing to the risk of burning.

10.2 Standard servicing and maintenance operations

Have a service carried out at least once a year, or more often, depending on the regulations in force in your country:1 Check for leaks in the system.2 Check the hydraulic pressure.3 Check the fluid drained via the safety valve and fill the installation if

necessary.4 Check the status of the components.5 Check the maximum flow rate of the pump.6 Check the electrical connections.7 Check that the collectors are not too dusty. The collectors can be

cleaned with water, but they must be cold to avoid breaking the crystal.

8 Check if the collector installation shows any signs of damage or if there is any accumulated waste.

9 Check if the collector shows any signs of corrosion.10 Check if there is any damage or leaks in the accessories and

pipework, and check the condition of the insulation on these components.
