Introduction: Dear colleagues, A new year and a new edition of the "Migratory Birds for People"-newsletter! This time in Pdf-format is also available on our MBP-webpage. The December-bulletin has also been put on the MBP-webpage. As usual at this time of year we received some nice stories about the activities around WWDay in February. Not the best time of the year for the northern part of Europe ! By the way, you are aware you are allowed to change the date to a more convenient time of the year ? Anyway, great respect for all your efforts to involve visitors in various educational activities ! You may already have noticed on the front page: after much creative work from our colleagues at the Urdaibai Bird Center and much discussion and consideration in the core group, we now proudly present our new MBP-Logo ! It is fresh and modern and hopefully we will use this for a long time. A draft for this years’ programme is on the next page. In the meantime you all are invited to prepare yourself for this meeting by seeking permission to attend and looking for travel arrangements. The Amager-reserve is very close to the international airport of Copenhagen (see map). We will discuss the various projects within our MBP-network and the new bid for EU-Life. Another important item will the international cooperation in the World Heritage Wadden Sea area (NL, G, and DK).

Registration – please contact the Head of WLI, Chris Rostron ([email protected]) , to register your interest. Arrival - aim to arrive on the evening of Sunday the 11th September, getting in to Copenhagen airport, from where transport will be provided. The centre is not far from the airport. Departure – you can depart on the 14th of September after the core meeting, or if you would like to visit Vadehavet, we will arrange transport, returning to Copenhagen on the 16th September. Accommodation : Vestamagar is offering basic accommodation, staying in their education centre. This will involve sharing a large room and sleeping on the floor. Alternatively, there are relatively cheap hotels nearby. At Vadehavet, hostel accommodation is available on site. DRAFT

NEW “MIGRATORY BIRDS FOR PEOPLE”- LOGO After some discussion in the year before, it was decided during our Annual Meeting in 2015 that we should create a more modern logo for our network. Our colleagues in Urdaibai kindly offered to develop a series of new logos which we could choose from. This resulted in a considerable number of logo-designs and after that the core-group struggled some time to decide on the favourable design. With many thanks to the creative minds in Urdaibai, we now proudly present our new logo and hope that it will appeal to most of you.

PROJECTS:

Life project Awareness Campaign about the relevance of wetlands for migratory birds Due to the developments in and around the Oostvaardersplassen, Staatsbosbeheer has expressed a desire to improve the sharing of its findings in the field of research and management with other wetland areas. Therefore the possibilities to create an LIFE project for this communication with international MBP -Partners were investigated in the last few months. First step has been an inventory of problems in the natural areas around the MBP visitor centres. The focus was on problems that can be solved by a communication intervention approach. Different topics were put forward:

Disturbance by tourists Nutrification of water by surrounding agricultural activities Water management

The aforementioned information has been the input for an initial proposal and plan of action. After feedback and discussion with various parties, Staatsbosbeheer has decided to continue with the preparation of a LIFE bid. First step is to form a project team with those MBP wetland centres that have indicated an interest in partaking in the project. The aim is to submit the LIFE application in 2017 call. More informative, please contact: Theo de Bruin; [email protected] PROJECT: “Follow the swans”: From Russia with swans: woman’s first ever paramotor ‘migration’

In this project the migration of Bewick Swans will be followed by Mrs. Sacha Dens. A champion sportswoman and conservationist will fly 4,500 miles from the Russian Arctic to Britain next autumn, using just a parachute wing and strapped to a small propeller engine, in the first ever attempt to follow Bewick’s swans on their annual migration.

Sacha Dench will cross 11 countries across tundra and stop at numerous wetlands and Ramsar Sites.

The expedition will uncover new science about the Bewick’s swans, whose numbers have halved in the last 20 years, and unite people from different cultures to try to reverse the decline.

Sacha Dench, who works for the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT) and is a former British and Australian free-diving champion, will follow the swans in her paramotor as winter drives them off their breeding grounds. She will film and make live broadcasts along the way.

Her first challenge will be to cross the Russian tundra, one of the most wild and remote places on earth. Over ten weeks she will cross 11 countries, become the first woman ever to paramotor across the Channel, and fly along the River Thames through central London. She will face many of the same challenges as the swans, from extreme weather and polar bears to a hostile landscape of pylons and tall buildings, as well as struggling to find safe places to land, rest and refuel.

Norway: Fetsund Lenser, Nordre Øyeren wetland centre Celebrating World Wetland Day In the wetland centre of Nordre Øyeren, we celebrated the World Wetland Day with various activities primarily focusing on the children and youth. The activities included birdhouse making, bird and nature quizzes, feeding the aquarium fish and engaging with the audience, making ice art, colouring and painting, displaying two exhibits around our centre and more.

The exhibits highlighted the importance of wetlands through various topics, both on a global and a local scale. They informed about the consequences following wetland deterioration, advantages of restoration and protection. How preserving the wetlands enhances the biodiversity and the water resources around the world. The goal of the exhibits was to show the

audience how the different topics were connected and make them aware of how they can contribute to preserve and protect our wetlands. And despite the rainfall and brisk winds, people gathered at our centre and enjoyed an afternoon with families and friends participating in our various activities. Other activities

We are currently working with updating some of our exhibitions at the wetland centre and apart from repairs, we have recently refreshed all the fact sheets in the exhibitions with colour and an English summery. Also we are working with an new interactive part of our exhibition which will show how the delta are changing throughout the year and children can learn about some of the plants and animals which uses this important wetland for food and shelter. Now days we are making a completely new web page also – it’s not finished – but the beta-version can be viewed at: http://beta.mia.no/besokssentervatmark/.

Nordre Øyeren nature reserve Spring is slowly arriving at the nature reserve of Nordre Øyeren – but still there are a lot of snow everywhere. The birds are starting to arrive and small flocks of mallards and common goldeneyes are seen. 200 individuals of Whooper Swans arrived already in February – and a White-tailed eagle have been reported a couple of times. Spring are in progress - the best has yet to come. Best regards from Trude

Germany : Nationalpark - Haus Husum Nationalpark-Haus Husum, at the World Heritage Site Wadden Sea Recently we updated and translated our Wadden Sea posters on birds. One of them is an „East Atlantic Flyway Poster“ (wwf.de/watt/poster_flyway) that we have first published about 25 years ago and updated several times since then. The new international edition combines 4 languages (German, Dutch, Danish and English), so it can equally be used in the entire Wadden Sea. A second poster which has been updated several times already is about birds in the Wadden Sea (German version at http://www.wwf.de/fileadmin/fm-wwf/Publikationen-PDF/Poster_Voegel_NP_WWF_2004.pdf). We now produced also a Dutch (http://www.wwf.de/fileadmin/fm-wwf/Publikationen-PDF/Poster_Voegel_im_Nationalpark_Wattenmeer_NL.pdf) and a Danish version (http://www.wwf.de/fileadmin/fm-wwf/Publikationen-PDF/Poster_Voegel_im_Nationalpark_Wattenmeer_DK.pdf) so we can use the poster in the entire Wadden Sea in the framework of the International Wadden Sea School (www.iwss.org). Single posters can be ordered by MBP people for free at [email protected], if there is interest in using larger numbers you can contact the same address. Hans-Ulrich Rösner

United Kingdom : Slimbridge Assessing the effects of wind turbines on Bewick’s swan migration The, northwest European Bewick’s swan Cygnus columbianus bewickii population, which was estimated to number 21,500 birds in January 2005, breeds on the open maritime tundras of European Arctic Russia. This population migrates west along the Arctic coast of Russia, then southwest over Karelia and along the Baltic coast, to winter in western Europe (Rees & Beekman 2010). The population has decreased by 38% from its peak in 1995 to the International swan census in 2010 (Beekman et al. 2015). A Bewick’s swan Species Action Plan therefore was developed in consultation with experts from all range states, and this was adopted by the African-Eurasian Waterbird Agreement (AEWA) in May 2012 (Nagy et al. 2012). The main reasons for the rapid decline in numbers are still being investigated, but a combination of factors could be affecting the swans’ breeding success and survival rates, or reducing opportunities for the population to recover. Factors being considered include weather conditions, changes in food supply, disturbance levels, illegal hunting, lead poisoning, power-lines and wind turbines.

Over the past two years, WWT has used new state-of-the-art Global Positioning System-Global System for Mobile communication (‘GPS-GSM’) tracking devices to describe the swans’ movements between the UK and continental Europe, for informing the proposed development of offshore wind farm sites between southeast England and the Netherlands

Eight birds were fitted with 50g collar-mounted Ecotone GPS/UHF/GSM loggers on the Ouse Washes, SE England in winter 2013/14, with 10 more tagged on the Ouse Washes plus four at Slimbridge, SW England, in winter 2014/15, to determine whether the proposed offshore wind farms would occur along the swans’ migration route.. (see also map above) Analyses of the swans’ tracks in relation to wind farm locations will be included in a report for submission to the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) in early 2016, for use as part of DECC’s Offshore Energy Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) programme (Griffin et al. 2015)

World Migration Bird Day 2016

World Migratory Bird Day is an Annual Global Celebration

See also: http://www.worldmigratorybirdday.org

World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) was initiated in 2006 and is an annual awareness-raising campaign highlighting the need for the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats. Each year, on the second weekend in May, people around the world take action and organize public events such as bird festivals, education programmes, exhibitions and bird-watching excursions to celebrate WMBD. However, countries or regions observing the peak of migrations at other times of the year are encouraged to celebrate WMBD when it is most appropriate for them.

Connecting Events with a Global Campaign and Theme

World Migratory Bird Day activities take place in many different countries and places across the globe - united by a common campaign and theme. If you are interested in organizing an event to mark WMBD, register your planned activity. In this way, individual events can be shared with others around the world and help inspire them to take action too. Find out how you can participate.
